Gay History – March 28, 1921: #BOTD Actor Dirk Bogarde

Actor Dirk Bogarde (March 28, 1921- May 8, 1999) was born Derek Jules Gaspard Ulric Niven van den Bogaerde, but his friends and fans just called him Dirk. Throughout his career, Bogarde appeared in more than 60 films and was known for his captivating performances and charming and sometimes intense screen presence.

Bogarde who became one of Britain’s top matinee idols in the 1950s. In the 1960s decided to do away with his heart-throb image with more challenging and greatest roles, including that of the closeted Melville Farr in 1961’s Victim, who resolves to break up an extortion racket that targets gay men. Time magazine, in its review of Victim, called it “a plea for perversion.” “Everybody in the picture who disapproves of homosexuals proves to be an ass, a dolt or a sadist,” Time fumed. “Nowhere does the film suggest that homosexuality is a serious (but often curable) neurosis that attacks the biological basis of life itself.”

But it was Bogarde’s work with director Joseph Losey that really cemented his reputation as a serious actor. In 1961, Bogarde starred in Losey’s film “The Servant,” which was a critical success and received several award nominations. The film explored themes of class, power, and sexuality and Bogarde’s portrayal of the manipulative manservant was both subtle and mesmerizing.  Bogarde also took on the gay lead in the 1971 art house film Death in Venice. Warner Brothers tried to drop the distribution of Death in Venice because they feared it would be banned for obscenity, but relented after Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Anne attended the London premiere.

It was brave for a popular actor to take on gay roles, especially in the 1960s and 1970s and it was doubly brave for Bogarde because he never officially came out although his sexuality was often the subject of rumors. He became an advocate for gay rights and was outspoken about his support for decriminalizing homosexuality. He remained dedicated to his lifelong partner, Anthony Forwood, whose 1988 death after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease and liver cancer led Bogarde to become an advocate for assisted suicide. Bogarde, by then had quit acting and turned to writing, publishing seven memiors and several novels. Bogarde didn’t come out in any of his memoirs, although he did talk about caring for Forwood.

Dirk Bogarde was knighted in 1992, suffered a debilitating stroke in 1996, and died of a heart attack in 1999. It wasn’t until 2004, upon the publication of an authorized biography, that his brother, Gareth van den Bogarde, finally acknowledged publicly that Dirk was gay.

Dirk Bogarde was a talented and brave actor who left an indelible mark on the film industry. He was known for his nuanced performances and his ability to convey complex emotions on screen. His portrayal of characters who were both flawed and compelling. Bogarde’s legacy continues to be celebrated by fans of classic cinema, and his influence can be seen in the work of many contemporary actors

Gay History Month – Forgotten Gay Heroes: Out Actor and Hollywood AIDS Warrior Tom Villard (1953 – 1994)

Tom Villard was an up and coming Hollywood star. He was featured in situation comedies, episodic TV series, and had leading roles in lower and mid-range budgeted features. At the peak of his career Villard was given featured supporting roles in big-budget studio fare, such as Clint Eastwood’s Heartbreak Ridge, and My Girl (with Dan Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis). .

But then fate dealt him a most unkind blow, he contracted AIDS and with it the onset of Kaposi Sarcom and developing lesions on his face and at the end of his nose. In Hollywood the most superficial of cities, in an industry that celebrates style over substance, a place where plastic surgery is required to be “beautiful” Villard, rather than hiding away and changing his name and living out the rest of his years anonymously, took his struggle to the public.

Tom Villard became one of the few actors in Hollywood in the early 1990s who chose to be open about his homosexuality, and the challenge of living with HIV and AIDS. In February 1994, Villard made an unprecedented appearance on Entertainment Tonight, acknowledging to “…more than 13 million viewers that he was gay, that he had AIDS, and that he needed some help.”

“I felt like I could do something by saying that I am not a feces-eating-pederast-sex-crazed somebody who has invoked God’s wrath. It turned everything upside down on its ear.” – Tom Villard

According to a POZ magazine profile in December of that year Villard said, “An awful lot of people suddenly wouldn’t let me in the door for auditions. I started speaking a couple of months ago about living with AIDS and having hope,” he said. “It feels a little more useful than things (I’ve done) in the past.” He went on to explain that since his appearance on E.T., a whole other group of people had come forward to welcome him. Bill Melamed, Villard’s manager added: “ “I am particularly proud of him. The reality is, acting is a lousy business. There wasn’t a choice here whether he could have hidden it. Plenty of people have KS, but it’s on their feet. He made a decision that was courageous in any walk of life, but it doesn’t surprise me. He has one of the most open spirits.”.

One of his final roles was playing a Bajoran monk on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

On November 14, 1994, Tom Villard died at the age of 40 of AIDS related pneumonia  He was survived by his parents, Ron and Diane Villard, twin brothers Timothy and Terry, sister Susan, and his partner Scott Chambliss.

As a tribute to him, a non-profit foundation was created by his partner Chambliss, close friend Karen Kaye, and his friend and chiropractor Cheryl Revkin. The Tom Villard Foundation was a Silver Lake community-based effort which engaged local businesses to provide free goods and services for community members living with AIDS. The beneficiaries were the client base of the former Silver Lake AIDS support organization, Being Alive. The Tom Villard Foundation no longer exists. Being Alive is now headquartered in West Hollywood

Tom Villard’s bravery and courage during those dark days as he faced unbeatable odds makes him a true hero.

Gay History – 1962: TIME Trashes UK Gay Classic “VICTIM” Calls It A “Plea for Perversion” – Watch the FULL Movie

The 1961 British film Victim featured a plot steeped in homosexual blackmail.

Directed by Basil Dearden, and starring Dirk Bogarde and Sylvia Syms. It was the first English language film to ever use the word “homosexual”.

The plot revolves around A successful, but very closeted barrister (lawyer for you Yanks), Melville Farr, (Dirk Bogarde) seeking to break up a blackmail ring after one of his gay client commits suicide.  The 1961 film brought to mass audiences a key danger that gay people faced: “A law which sends homosexuals to prison is a charter for blackmail.” as quoted in the movie.

The film had been released in Britain in August of 1961, but was barred from U.S. theaters because the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America’s (MPPDA) standards prohibited films with homosexual content.

British reviews praised Bogarde’s performance as his best and praised his courage in taking on the role. A London women’s magazine called it “the most startlingly outspoken film Britain has ever produced”.

Bosley Crowther wrote that the film “appears more substantial and impressive than its dramatic content justifies” because “it deals with a subject that heretofore has been studiously shied away from or but cautiously hinted at on the commercial screen”.

[A]s a frank and deliberate exposition of the well-known presence and plight of the tacit homosexual in modern society it is certainly unprecedented and intellectually bold. It makes no bones about the existence of the problem and about using the familiar colloquial terms. The very fact that homosexuality as a condition is presented honestly and unsensationally, with due regard for the dilemma and the pathos, makes this an extraordinary film.

Victim was the only British entry in the Venice Film Festival in 1961, where an Italian critic commented: “at last the British have stopped being hypocrites”

In the United States the MPPDA changed its code five weeks later  and Victim saw its U.S. premiere on February 5, 1962.

In a film review two weeks later, Time magazine trashed the movie:

Victim has a neat plot, deft direction by Basil Dearden, and the sort of grum good manners one expects of the British in these trying situations. It also has a careful performance by Bogarde, and it pursues with eloquence and conviction the case against an antiquated statute.

But what seems at first an attack on extortion seems at last a coyly sensational exploitation of homosexuality as a theme —and, what’s more offensive, an implicit approval of homosexuality as a practice.

Almost all the deviates in the film are fine fellows—well dressed, well spoken, sensitive, kind. The only one who acts like an overt invert turns out to be a detective.

Everybody in the picture who disapproves of homosexuals proves to be an ass, a dolt or a sadist. Nowhere does the film suggest that homosexuality is a serious (but often curable) neurosis that attacks the biological basis of life itself. “I can’t help the way I am,” says one of the sodomites in this movie. “Nature played me a dirty trick.” And the scriptwriters, whose psychiatric information is clearly coeval with the statute they dispute, accept this sick-silly self-delusion as a medical fact.

Victim became a highly sociologically significant film that many believe played an influential role in liberalizing attitudes and the laws in Britain regarding homosexuality as is considered a classic of gay cinema.

Actor Terry Crews Continues On About His “Sexual Assault” Grope: I felt “emasculated” and “objectified”

Last month actor and former NFL football player Terry Crews spoke out about a “sexual assault” against him by a high level Hollywood executive (an agent) who groped him one night at a party.

Yesterday on Good Morning America Crews  spoke out once again about the man: Adam Venit, the head of William Morris Endeavor’s motion picture group and his poor sense of aim when Terry stuck out his hand for a friendly shake this time upping the gropes to more than the one he originally stated when he came forward and saying that this time he pushed him away “forcefully”.

“I stick my hand out and he literally takes his hand and puts it, and squeezes my genitals. And I jump back like, ‘Hey, hey!’ … I go, ‘Dude, what are you doing? And then he comes back again and he just won’t stop. And then I really got forceful, pushed him back. He bumps into all the other partygoers and he starts giggling and laughing. I have never felt more emasculated, more objectified. I was horrified. I went over to Adam [Sandler] right then and there and said, ‘Man, come get your boy. What is his problem?’”

Added Crews:

“When the Weinstein thing started happening I got PTSD. I was going, ‘Oh my god, this exact thing happened to me.’ I understand why they won’t come forward. … When a person of power breaks that boundary and violates that boundary, you’re a prisoner of war.”

Adam Venit who also represents  Adam Sandler, Emma Stone, Diane Keaton, Eddie Murphy, and others  took a leave of absence from William Morris after being accused by Crews.

You really have to wonder considering that it was a grope and with Crews being such large intimidating man that if there might be some internalized homophobia involved?  Boundaries were broken yes. But there could have been no physical threat against him (Crews is 6′ 3″, Weight 245 lbs) and Venit doesn’t even represent him.  Would Crews be coming forward and being all the diva snowflake if a female agent had done this to him, even an ugly old gorgon? Or would it be forgotten or something he and Sandler would occasionally have a private laugh about?

Right now I’m afraid to re-watch “White Chicks” where Crews is objectified as a well endowed black man including close ups of his crotch.

I don’t want to further aggravate his PTSD.

Rep. Louie “Crazy As A Bedbug” Gohmert Compares LGBT Advocates To Nazis In House Floor Speech (Video)

Louie Gohmert

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) took to the House floor on Friday afternoon to offer a Third Reich comparison that was bizarre even for Third Reich comparisons..

After saying that Christians like himself really “love homosexuals,” Gohmert complained of being persecuted by LGBT Nazis!

So it is amazing that in the name of liberality, in the name of being tolerant, this fascist intolerance has arisen. People that stand up and say, you know, I agree with the majority of Americans, I agree with Moses and Jesus that marriage was a man and a woman, now all of a sudden, people like me are considered haters, hate mongers, evil, which really is exactly what we’ve seen throughout our history as going back to the days of the Nazi takeover in Europe. What did they do? First, they would call people “haters” and “evil” and build up disdain for those people who held those opinions or religious views or religious heritage. And then the next came, well, those people are so evil and hateful, let’s bring every book that they’ve written or has to do with them and let’s start burning the books, because we can’t tolerate their intolerance.

It takes a special kind of stupid to keep sending THIS special kind of stupid to Congress.

Let Texas secede. Please

14 Year Old Boy Blinded In Gay Bashing At Brooklyn Middle School

14 year old Kardin Ulysse has been left blind in one eye after a brutal “gay bashing” by bullies which took place in the cafeteria of a Brooklyn middle school.

Kardin  has undergone two surgeries on his right eye since the June 5 beatdown at Roy H. Mann Junior High School in Bergen Beach. It is unclear whether the bullies’ multiple punches or the broken shards of lens from his eyeglasses caused the damage to his cornea. “The doctor says he needs a transplant,” Pierre Ulysse said. “For me to send him to school with two eyes and come back with one eye is really absurd. “I want the world to know about this,” he added. Kardin, an eighth-grader, was set upon by a pair of seventh-graders who were calling him a “fucking faggot” a “pussy,” a “transvestite” and “gay,” according to a Department of Education occurrence report. While one schoolmate pinned the victim’s arms, the other rained punches on Kardin’s face, head and neck. Kardin broke away and the fight continued in the cafeteria until school safety officers and school aides finally intervened.

This is not the first time that Kardin was a victim of bullying at the school.

Last year the  Roy H. Mann dean was contacted and told that Kardin had been a victim of bullying at the school for some  time. Last October, another thug attacked him and tried to steal his school  lunch money. But nothing came of it.

Just last year the parents of another 13-year-old student filed a lawsuit against Roy H.  Mann school alleging a pattern of bullying.

Kardin’s parents’ lawyer is calling on police to investigate the assault as a hate crime.  Both the boys involved were only charged with misdemeanors in Family Court.

Kardin’s parents intend to sue the school.

AUDIO – Pat Buchanan Blames “The Gays” For His Ousting From MSNBC

ThinkProgress LGBT reports that Pat Buchanan, the homophobic, racist, xenophobe, and ex-Nixon henchman is blaming “radical gays” and “people of color” for his firing by MSNBC network president Phil Griffin following the extreme outrage over his book  Suicide of a Superpower.

Said Buchanan:

“Look, for a long period of time the hard left, militant gay rights groups, militant — they call themselves civil rights groups, but I’m not sure they’re concerned about civil rights — people of color, Van Jones, these folks and others have been out to get Pat Buchanan off T.V., deny him speeches, get his column canceled.”

Yea!  We did something right!

But seriously cupcake.  Stop clutching those pearls and playing the victim. You were fired because you’re a bigot. Nothing more, nothing less.

But on the bright side the KKK Annual BBQ has a place already set for you!

LISTEN:

American Family Association Hate Group’s Bryan Fischer: "Ruben Diaz Is A Hate Crime Victim!"

“For taking a principled, religiously-rooted stand for the institution that undergirds all of human civilization, Diaz has become the latest in a long, sad string of victims of the true hatemongers in America, homosexuals activists. Their hate crime against him is motivated by prejudice against his religion, which teaches that God designed marriage exclusively as the union of one man and one woman. Chuck Colson is another whose eyes are wide open to the steaming hate billowing from the denizens of the homosexual lobby. ‘The gay-rights groups have shown their fangs. They want to silence, yes, destroy those who don’t agree with their agenda.’ Homosexuals are rapidly cementing their position as the number one perpetrators of hate crimes in American today. Sen. Diaz is simply the latest prey of the hatemongering hunters on the left, who live in mortal fear that someone, somewhere, actually believes what God says about marriage and human sexuality. And the list will grow longer before it grows shorter.”

Excuse me?

“”They want to silence, yes, destroy those who don’t agree with their agenda.” Isn’t that what you mother-fucking monotheist pricks have been doing for centuries?

Its an insult to anyone who’s ever been a victim of an actual hate crime to hear this smug , entitled christocrat  to pretend that he and Diaz are victimized in any way.
