The United Arab Emirates has banned the upcoming Pixar animated film Lightyear from showing in cinemas amid reports that the film includes a kiss between two female characters. The Emirates, home to Abu Dhabi and Dubai, announced through its Media Regulatory Office of the country’s Ministry of Youth and Culture that the film would not be opening in the country this Thursday. The film “is not licensed for public screening in all cinemas in the UAE, due to its violation of the country’s media content standards,” the office said in a tweet.
In an ironically named instructional video called “Be Yourself” on YouTube. Two Arab teenagers are shown “de-gaying” a friend in a rather bizarre and upsetting way. The righteous young Muslim boys try to de-gay their friend by scrubbing him down, trimming his nails, giving him a haircut and telling him to “butch it up” after smacking him across the face.
Once in the villa’s living room, the effeminate man is told that he needs to change his personality. One of the traditional-dressed men asks: ‘will you change it or not?’ He replies ‘yes but how?’ And is told ‘leave it to us’.
They proceed to show the effeminate guy how to mimic masculine gestures. Later he is given a ‘make-over’ where his hands and face are almost violently scrubbed with scouring cloths, and then his nails and hair are cut. After the make-over the still effeminate guy gets a slap when he is about leave for saying ‘bye guys’ in his high pitch voice, and given a tip: ‘Thicken your voice!’
I watched this with hopes it’s some form of satire…. but it’s not. The music and cheap-80s porn Jean-Daniel Cadinot may lead you to believe it might be. But the Arab/Muslim moral of this story is to the point and quite terrifying.
