Sacramento PRIDE Reverses Decision, Will Now ALLOW LGBT Police To March In Uniform

Sacramento PRIDE Reverses Decision, Will Now ALLOW LGBT Police To March In Uniform

Following immense push-back from the greater LGBT community uniformed police officers will again be allowed to participate in Sacramento PRIDE events this weekend, and a new set of police department policies will be enacted to build trust with the LGBT community.

The announcement made Thursday by the Sacramento Police Department and Sacramento LGBT Community Center, reversed a decision the center announced last week that uniformed officers would not be allowed to participate in order to “protect” transgender people and QPOC who “experience fear and anxiety provoked by the uniform.”

After an immense outcry from the greater LGBT community that exclusion is not an LGBT value and further negotiations with SPD, the police department agreed to create an LGBTQ liaison in its outreach unit, and create a standing “LGBT Community Advisory Committee” to recommend policies to better serve the LGBT community and “remove all barriers” for the community to interact with law enforcement. The SPD will also co-create a new training program that “elevates the voices of the “marginalized” trans and QPOC communities and discusses the role of implicit bias,” the release said.

Meanwhile the roughly 16 lower staff members with the Sacramento LGBT Community Center released a statement Thursday night saying they have taken a no-confidence vote against their Board of Directors following the decision to allow officers in uniform to attend PRIDE events and are demanding the immediate resignation of Carlos Marquez, the board’s president, and any board members who agreed to allow officers to march in their uniforms.

We wholeheartedly disagree with the decision that this concession to the police force is a powerful symbolic and visual cue that prioritizes those with the most power and influence over our most marginalized community members whether they are transgender, nonbinary, Black, Brown and other POC folks, intersex, undocumented, disabled, unhoused, sex workers and others in the community that are often ignored, misgendered, abused and murdered by folks in SacPD and other law enforcement uniforms.

There is no word on what the “collective action” will be.

Sacramento PRIDE will take place June 8-9 at Capitol Mall.

Gay and Trans Migrants Claim "Rampant Abuse" at New Mexico Detention Facility

Gay and Trans Migrants Claim “Rampant Abuse” at New Mexico Detention Facility

Gay and Trans migrants held at an immigration facility in New Mexico have been subjected to “rampant sexual harassment, discrimination and abuse,” advocates and lawyers claimed in aletter released Monday.

The letter sent to immigration authorities and the warden of Otero County Processing Center in Chaparral, New Mexico describe about how gay men and trans women were subject to both physical and mental abuse and placed in solitary confinement — or threatened with solitary — after complaining about conditions.

The letter included an incident about a 20-year-old gay man from Honduras was repeatedly groped when he was detained at Otero and asked to perform sexual favors in exchange for food.

“When I complained, I was thrown into solitary confinement for five days and threatened with further punishment if I complained again,” he said, according to the release.

Guards also allegedly interrupted showers and offered to help transgender women bathe, according to the letter. Medical staff allegedly refused to provide hormones to three of the women.

Management & Training Corporation, the private company that operates Otero, said that it follows ICE’s transgender detainee guidelines and “is not aware of any incidents at the facility that even come close to these allegations.”

“And any implication that management was aware of any harassment or discrimination against transgender individuals or any other individuals is not true,” the statement says. “We have no evidence of rampant sexual harassment, discrimination, abuse, denying proper medical care to transgender detainees, and no evidence of retaliation and improper use of solitary confinement.”

Riiiiiiight.

Shelton and James – also described Joly as being ‘very deceptive’ and as having ‘layers of manipulation.’

Police turned their attentions to Joly after discovering he had bought $10 of gas at a local Marathon store on the morning of the fire and traces of gasoline were also found on his clothes, The Detroit News reported.

LGBT Outreach Worker and Transwoman Brandy Martell Shot And Killed In Oakland CA

Brandy Martell, a transwoman who worked at an outreach center for the transgender and transsexual community was shot to death this weekend in Oakland CA.

37-year-old Brandy Martell was sitting behind the wheel of her car around 5:15 a.m. Sunday when one or two men walked up and began a conversation. A witness told ABC7 the conversation was cordial, but then a few minutes later, one of the men became angry and fired into the car right where Martell was sitting…

…Investigators are talking to witnesses and trying to figure out exactly what led up to the shooting. It could be considered a hate crime if they find out that the shooter was motivated by a perception of the victim’s sexual identity

Very tragic, and sad.  Another precious life lost to hate and bigotry.

Bradley Manning Legal Team Uses Gay & Trans Identity Issues As Part Of Its Defense

Bradley Manning the young gay soilder who was arrested for allegedly slipping government secrets to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks while working as an intelligence analyst in Iraq in 2009 and 2010 finally after 18 months in captivity has gotten his first day in court.

Although Manning has become a hero to peace and anti-secrecy activists worldwide, the Obama administration says the released information has threatened valuable military and diplomatic sources and strained America’s relations with other governments. Manning’s lawyers have argued that much of the information that was classified by the Pentagon posed no risk.

One of the first issues to arise during this weeks testimony was whether Manning’s sexual orientation is relevant to the case against him. His attorneys maintained that his status as a homosexual in the military before the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell” contributed to mental and emotional problems that should have barred him from having access to sensitive material.

The defense also revealed that Manning had written to one of his supervisors in Baghdad before his arrest, saying he was suffering from gender-identity disorder. He included a picture of himself dressed as a woman and talked about how it was affecting his ability to do his job and even think clearly.

At the time the files were leaked, being openly gay was prohibited in the U.S. military under the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, a ban which was scrapped earlier this year.

Special Agent Toni Graham, with the Army Criminal Investigation Division of the Military Police, told the court she had found a folder with printed materials related to gender identity, but disregarded them as irrelevant to the leak investigation.

“We already knew that Pfc Manning was a homosexual. … We knew he was interested in those topics,” she said, adding that he also had a “very limited” number of friends.

Bradley’s case has spawned an international support network of people who believe the U.S. government has gone too far in seeking to punish him

Manning could face up to life in prision if found guilty.
