Oscar Winning Actress Patricia Neal Passes Away at Age 84 – "Klaatu Barada Nikto"

Actress Patricia Neal, who rebuilt a troubled career to win an Academy Award only to face a more desperate battle for survival when three strokes left her paralyzed and unable to speak or remember, has died.

Neal (84) died Sunday of lung cancer at her home in Edgartown, Mass

A succession of tragedies marked the life of the actress whose bright promise on Broadway in the mid-1940s took her to Hollywood and into a succession of lackluster films, as well as a desperate love affair with actor Gary Cooper and marriage to British writer Roald Dahl.

Among her many memorable performances that also include 1950’s A Face in the Crowd and 1960’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s (as the older “benefactor” of the handsome young writer) was her role as the heiress Dominque opposite Gary Cooper’s uncompromising architect Howard Roark in 1949’s The Fountainhead, the adaptation of the Ayn Rand novel. For three years afterward, Cooper and Neal carried on a torrid romance that ultimately ended when he refused to leave his wife and young daughter  But most baby boomers will remember her  for The Homecoming” (1971), which launched “The Waltons” series as the original “Ma Walton” and as “Helen” from the science fiction classic “The Day The Earth Stood Still”  (1951)
