PRIDE MONTH Gay History - June 9th: Cole Porter, David Hockney, and Franco Zeffirelli

PRIDE Month History – June 9: Shipwrecked Sodomite Sailors, Cole Porter, David Hockney, Franco Zeffirelli, and Christine Jorgensen

June 9th.

1653 – The Plymouth Colony court records reported that Teague Jones and Richard Berry (both male) would be held to answer for living together in an uncivil relationship. The court was very family oriented and preferred  single men to live with families, and not together as couples. While there is no record of the outcome of the trial, six years later Berry was charged with obscene practices and banished from the colony.

1727 – The merchant vessel Zeewijk wrecked itself on the Houtman Abrolhos islands off the coast of Western Australia.  Hitting a submerged reef, ten men drowned and two weeks passed before the crew could even launch a rescue boat. The desperate survivors used a single longboat to send 11 of their strongest men to Java for rescue – but they were never seen or heard from again. In the months that followed, the remaining crew were forced to build a new boat from scratch, using wood from the Zeewijk and material from surrounding islands.

During this time, two young sailors, Adriaen Spoor and Pieter Engels, were caught by their crewmen in “the abominable and god-forsaken deeds of Sodom and Gomorrah” and sentenced to death. They were abandoned on separate rocky islands and left to starve while the others escaped in their patchwork ship.

1764 – Jacobus Itebelaar was hanged for robbery and attempted sodomy. He blamed alcohol and Satan.

1892 – Cole Porter was born on this date in Peru, Indiana.  A snob and would-be aristocrat, Porter was one of America’s best songwriters. When Cary Grant played Porter in the film “Night and Day,” they ignored Porter’s glass closet.

Despite being married, (For Porter, a wife afforded a respectable heterosexual front, and for Linda Thomas who married him, Porter’s success and growing fame only enhanced her social position.)  Porter himself had significant relationships with several men, including Boston socialite Howard Sturges, architect Ed Tauch (who inspired “Easy to Love”), choreographer Nelson Barclift (who inspired “You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To”), actor Robert Bray, and longtime companion Ray Kelly, to whose children Porter left half of his royalties when he died in 1964.  Porter’s life was significantly de-gayed in the 2004 biopic De-Lovely: The Cole Porter Story with Kevin Kline in the starring role. William McBrien’s 1998 biography however provides a much more complete picture of Porter’s life.

1924 – Professional wrestler and wrestling entrepreneur, Jim Barnett was born on this date. He was one of the promoters of Australia’s World Championship Wrestling and the former owner of Georgia Championship Wrestling, which later was renamed World Championship Wrestling. Barnett served as an adviser to the World Wrestling Federation (many credit him with masterminding the first three WrestleMania shows, which helped the organization establish their identity), Jim Crockett Promotions and World Championship Wrestling. Jim Barnett was one of the few known men in wrestling who was openly gay.

1936 – June Jordan, poet, teacher and community activist was born on this date in Harlem to Jamaican immigrant parents. She is widely regarded as one of the most significant and prolific Black, bisexual writers of the twentieth century.

Jordan’s first published book, “Who Look at Me”, appeared in 1969, was a collection of poems for children. Twenty-seven more books followed in her lifetime, one (“Some of Us Did Not Die, Collected and New Essays”) was in press when she died. Two more have been published posthumously: “Directed By Desire: The Collected Poems of June Jordan” (Copper Canyon Press, 2005) and a re-issue of the 1970 poetry collection, “SoulScript”, edited by Jordan

1937 – Birth date of English artist David Hockney. Based in Los Angeles, California, Hockney was an important contributor to the British Pop art movement of the 1960s, and considered one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century.

In 1961 Hockney moved to California. in 1964. Bohemian lifestyles were the new fad, artists were welcomed with arms wide open, and the gay scene was bubbling with possibilities. In countless interviews with Hockney, he looked back at those days with impenetrable nostalgia. In an interview with The Telegraph, Hockney said: “They want to be ordinary – they want to fit in. Well I don’t care about that. I don’t care about fitting in. Everywhere is so conservative.” Hockney wanted to celebrate just how different the gay lifestyle is from the heterosexual one. It has to do with extravagance, treating the world as a playing field for daredevils, and, most of all, leading an unapologetic life.

1947 – “Newsweek” magazine reported on the US military’s intensified campaign to purge homosexuals. It described homosexuals as abnormal and neuropsychiatric cases. It also described methods used to screen out homosexuals, and said that according to Army files they had higher intelligence than the average soldier, performed admirably, and were law-abiding and hard-working.

That strange story, in retrospect, was that gay people came from all walks of life. But in 1947, neither the Army nor Newsweek in its June 9, 1947 story could wrap their heads around that fact. Newsweek was also surprised to learn that gays were, on average, intelligent, not particularly feminine, and “as a whole, these men were law-abiding and hard working. In spite of nervous, unstable and often hysterical temperaments they performed admirably as workers. Many tried to be good soldiers.” If gay soldiers were “nervous,” that undoubtedly came from the consequences of being found out. “Once this abnormality was detected, the man was usually evacuated by the unit doctors to a general hospital where he received psychiatric treatment while a military board decided whether or not he was reclaimable. A good number begged to be cured, but doctors usually doubted their sincerity, and recommended discharge.”

But being discharged was far from the end to these soldiers’ problems. During the first half of the war, they were brought up on court-martial, punished and dishonorably discharged. But by 1943, courts-martial were overwhelmed by the rising caseload, so the Army decided to let them go with an administrative “blue” discharge — neither honorable or dishonorable, and so named for the color of paper they were printed on

1983 – Italian director Franco Zeffirelli came out in an interview with “The Advocate.”  Zeffirelli considers himself “homosexual” rather than gay, he feels the term “gay” is less elegant. Zeffirelli has adopted two adult sons, men he has worked with for years and who now live with him and manage his affairs.

Zeffirelli has received criticism from religious groups for what they call the blasphemous representation of biblical figures in his films and also criticism from members of the gay community for publicly backing the Roman Catholic Church with regard to homosexual issues

1984 – A KKK march was scheduled to take place on a busy Saturday, June 9th, in the middle of the afternoon in the very gay Montrose section of Houston, TX.  Leaders from the Houston Gay Political Caucus and other organizations urged everyone to “not dignify the KKK with our attendance.” A few days before the march, local gay bars received a poster depicting a hooded Klansman saying “I want YOU, Queer — Gas Homosexuals.” A number of bars posted the poster with a suggestion that it would be better to spend Saturday voting in the city’s run-off election. “At the polls, gays win,” read a response in an LGBT magazine, “At the march, no one wins.”

Police estimated about 2,000 observers showed up for the five block march from Waugh Drive to Mason Street. Those spectators were mostly reporters, photographers, and a few curious families from the area. One father was seen telling his five-year-old son, “See those men in white robes? They’re the bad people full of hate. We’re the good people.” At Mary’s, a legendary gay bar conveniently located where the Klan’s parade began, a loudspeaker outside blared “Springtime For Hitler.” from the musical The Producers as the Klan marched bu.  Six hundred police officers lined the route to protect the crowd from the Klan — or perhaps, more accurately, the other way around — as 58 Klansmen in full regalia marched down the street. The parade itself lasted all of 16 minutes, but it cost the city about $80,000 (that’s about $185,000 in today’s dollars). Other than a few beer bottles tossed toward the marchers, there were no incidents.

1989 – Fifty people protested an appearance by comedian Sam Kinison in Seattle, Washington because of racist, sexist, and anti-gay material in his act.

1989 – The ashes of pioneer transsexual Christine Jorgensen were scattered off Dana Point by her two nieces and two of her closest friends.

1990 – Michele Barzach, former health minister of France, called for the legalization of brothels to curb the spread of AIDS.

1992 – A US District Court ruled in favor of a group of artists who challenged the constitutionality of the National Endowment for the Arts decency clause. The artist’s grants had been denied because they worked with homoerotic subject matter.

1998 – Homophobe TV preacher Pat Robertson warned the city of Orlando, Florida that God would punish the city with natural disasters for allowing the display of rainbow flags during Gay Pride Month.

2008 – Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva launched that nation’s first ever national convention on LGBT rights. After calling for a universal embrace of the homosexual movement, the president affirmed that “homophobia” is perhaps “the most perverse disease impregnated in the human head.”

Trump Impeachment Lawyer Jay Sekulow Supports Criminalizing Homosexuality

Trump Impeachment Lawyer Jay Sekulow Supports Criminalizing Homosexuality and Scammed Millions from the Poor

Right Wing Watch reports that in the 1990’s anti-gay Christian crypt keeper Pat Robertson of the Christian Broadcasting Network placed Donald Trump impeachment team lawyer Jay Sekulow to run Robertson’s newly founded American Center for Law and Justice.

Robertson created the ACLJ as an anti-ACLU type group. Sekulow and the ACLJ opposed to laws protecting the rights of LGBT people in the U.S. and abroad. The ACLJ argued on behalf of state laws criminalizing gay sex that were overturned by the Supreme Court in 2003. Sekulow has said that the state has a “compelling interest to ban the act of homosexuality.”

In Africa, ACLJ worked to shape constitutional language in Zimbabwe, where it has fought to maintain criminalization of homosexuality.

Mother Jones report:

Sekulow and his son Jordan opened affiliated offices of the ACLJ in Africa to lobby politicians to “take the Christian’s views into consideration as they draft legislation and policies,” according to ACLJ’s website. ACLJ’s Zimbabwe office has pushed an agenda that backs outlawing same-sex marriage and making sure that homosexuality “remain[s] a criminal activity.” (Zimbabwe had outlawed homosexuality in 2006.)

Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe is among the most ruthless dictators in the world—but in 2010 ACLJ-Zimbabwe’s chairman, pastor Alex Chisango, led Mugabe and others in prayer to kick off Zimbabwe’s constitutional reform drive. ACLJ wanted to ensure that, whatever else changed in the country’s constitution, homosexuality remained illegal and same-sex marriage was banned.

Sekulow also has a long history of grifting money from the poor in the name of God as reported by the Guardian:

Documents obtained by the Guardian show Sekulow approved plans to push poor and jobless people to donate money to his Christian nonprofit, which since 2000 has steered more than $60 million to Sekulow, his family and their businesses.

Telemarketers for the nonprofit, Christian Advocates Serving Evangelism (Case), were instructed in contracts signed by Sekulow to urge people who pleaded poverty or said they were out of work to dig deep for a “sacrificial gift”.

“I can certainly understand how that would make it difficult for you to share a gift like that right now,” they told retirees who said they were on fixed incomes and had “no extra money” – before asking if they could spare “even $20 within the next three weeks”.

Other scripts that Sekulow contact representatives used to raise money siad that money was needed for Case’s “massive campaign to repeal and replace Obamacare” and that the “Christian” US was under siege from both Muslim terrorists and a liberal political elite led by President Obama supposedly desperate to increase the national abortion rate.

Cryptkeeper Pat Robertson: The Death Penalty Is "Absolutely Biblical"

Evangelical Cryptkeeper Pat Robertson: The Death Penalty Is “Absolutely Biblical”

Pat Robertson on the 700 Club:

Are you kidding? Read the Bible. Read the Old Testament. I tell you, if a son is ungovernable and will not listen to his parents, the parents can bring the son before the authorities and the son will be executed. Jesus said, you know, I don’t condemn you, neither should anybody else condemn you.

But I think the whole idea of forgiveness is absolutely there, but in terms of — the Apostle Paul said, ‘He that wields the sword wields it not in vein but he’s a minister of God to execute judgment on the unbeliever’ — on those who are disobedient. He’s a minister of God wielding judgment.

And I do think the death penalty — you got Charles Manson! Why should the state have to pay hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars to incarcerate a stone-cold killer? I mean, the death penalty is certainly biblical. Absolutely biblical!

The death penalty may be biblical but so is slavery. And slaughtering children, incest. and genocide.

Oh, and also feeding Christians to lions.

Hate Groups Respond to Equality Act Passage in the House - Perkins, Staver, and Pat Robertson. Oh My!

Hate Groups Respond to Equality Act Passage in the House – Perkins, Staver, and Pat Robertson. Oh My!

With the passage of the LGBT Equality Act in the House of Representatives so comes the crazy propaganda and criticisms from anti-gay hate group leaders.

First up we have Family Research Council president and white supremacist Tony Perkins via press release:

As the Equality Act (H.R. 5) just passed in the U.S. House of Representatives, I remind you, that this is an all-out assault on parental rights, on the family, and on the millions of people of faith in this country. The legislation goes far beyond just quarantining faith behind the four walls of a house of worship.

This act quarantines faith within your mind and says that’s where it must stay. It creates a world that punishes those who exercise their freedom to believe and live according to those beliefs. No institution or person of faith, be it a school, church, synagogue, mosque, business, or non-profit will escape its Orwellian reach.

The Religious Freedom Restoration Act will be committed to the “memory hole.” We will then experience a catastrophic loss of religious freedom in America, and, as a result, every American, those who believe and do not believe, will suffer the consequences. The American people must continue to speak with great force and clarity in opposition to the “In-equality” Act.

Next we have Matt Staver of the Liberty Counsel via press release: (Staver has claimed the Equality Act will “open the door” to pedophilia, ban the bible, and cause a rise in sexual assaults.

The U.S. House passed 236-173 HR 5, misnamed the “Equality Act,” with eight Republicans voting in favor and no Democrats voting against it. The eight Republicans are: Susan Brooks (IN-05); Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01); Elise Stefanik (NY-21); Greg Walden (OR-02); John Katko (NY-24); Mario Diaz-Balart (FL-25); Tom Reed (NY-23); and Will Hurd (TX-23).

“No one who voted for the misnamed ‘Equality Act’ deserves to serve in Congress,” said Mat Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel. “This bill destroys the fundamental religious freedom on which America was founded.”

“This bill is unpatriotic and dangerous. The misnamed ‘Equality Act’ has nothing to do with equality and is the most serious threat to life and liberty ever proposed by Congress. This bill needs to be stopped in the Senate. If this bill becomes law, the consequences are staggering,” said Staver.

And last but not least we have a crazy rant from the “Christian Crypt Keeper” himself Pat Robertson of the 700 Club himself who claims that
God will “vomit” & “get rid of” America if the Equality Act passes into law.

This is a devastating blow to religious freedom and to the sanctity of America.

If you want to bring the judgment of God on this nation, you just keep this stuff up. You know, I was reading in Leviticus where it said, ‘Because of these things, the land will vomit you out.’ Vomit you out. I think God will say, ‘I’ve had it with America, if you do this kind of stuff, I’m going to get rid of you as a nation.

There is plenty of stuff that is going on, when you look at the potential of atomic war, when you look at the potential of a solar strike or something on our grid, you could go down the line of devastation that could happen to our nation. We don’t want that. We want the blessing of God, not the curse of God

Christian Crypt Keeper Pat Robertson: I Am Being ‘Dominated’ By ‘Homosexuals’

Christian Crypt Keeper Pat Robertson: I Am Being ‘Dominated’ By ‘Homosexuals’

On Tuesday’s “The 700 Club,” Christian Crypt Keeper Pat Robertson went off his meds again and complained about “left-wing bias” in media, entertainment, and academia, stating that gays and lesbians have “infiltrated” such institutions and are now using them to dominate society.

Via Right Wing Watch:

“We have given the ground to a small minority. You figure, lesbians, one percent of the population; homosexuals, two percent of the population. That’s all. That’s statistically all. But they have dominated—dominated the media, they’ve dominated the cultural shift and they have infiltrated the major universities. It’s just unbelievable what’s being done. A tiny, tiny minority makes a huge difference. The majority—it’s time it wakes up.”

Robertson also went on to say that he is teaming up with “actor” Kevin Sorbo on taking back the culture: “So Kevin Sorbo brought me some scripts.I got one that I think would make a pretty good movie. I’m going to talk to Kevin to see what he thinks. We gotta make some more movies.”

Because Infighting Is Funny – Sean Hannity vs. Pat Robertson GOP Cannibalism At Its Best

Eat Your own

Republican worms across America are starting to turn on each other over Ted Cruz and his Suicide Caucus continuing to keep the Government shutdown.  And two of the biggest right-wing worms Fox New’s Sean “I smoke a big cigar because I have a little dick” Hannity and evangelical Pat “Crazy as a bedbug” Robertson have  joined in the to the Republican all-you-can-eat cannibal buffet.

Pat Robertson, on today’s 700 Club show.

“The Republicans have got to wave the white flag and say, ‘We fought a good fight and now it’s over.’ They cannot shut the government down and then bring about a default. We can’t do it. I mean, it would be devastating economically to every human being and the Republicans just can’t get tarred with that. So they tried and if they go to the electorate and say, ‘We tried, Obamacare was awful, we tried to get it underway and we weren’t successful, the Democrats wanted it, they fought for it and they wouldn’t let go so it’s their bill, their program.'”

Sean Hannity, on the other hand speaking last night on his radio show wants to fight, fight, fight!

“Either you believe that we need radical, positive, oriented solutions for this country and you willing to fight for them or you’re not. Is it a third party we need? I’ve often argued no. I’m not so sure anymore. It may be time for a new conservative party in America. I’m sick of these guys. The problem here is the more establishment wing of the Republican party, they didn’t stick together with these guys and instead the establishment has been out there trashing principled conservatives for keeping their principles and for keeping their commitment and their promises to their constituents. They have now declared war on principled conservatives like Ted Cruz, doing the bidding of the Democrats and the leftist media and now you’ve got the establishment Republicans trashing the conservative base of their own party.”

Pass the popcorn and lets have a Sean Hannity vs. Pat Roberson duel!   Flaming assholes at 200 feet!

Pat Robertson Responds: I Only Said That Because Gays Were Trying To Infect Me With AIDS

Pat Roberstosn Liar

“I was asked by a viewer whether she had a right to leave her church because she had been asked to transport an elderly man who had AIDS and about whose condition she had not been informed. My advice was that the risk of contagion in those circumstances was quite low and that she should continue to attend the church and not worry about the incident.

In my own experience, our organization sponsored a meeting years ago in San Francisco where trained security officers warned me about shaking hands because, in those days, certain AIDS-infected activists were deliberately trying to infect people like me by virtue of rings which would cut fingers and transfer blood.

I regret that my remarks had been misunderstood, but this often happens because people do not listen to the context of remarks which are being said. In no wise (sic) were my remarks meant as an indictment of the homosexual community or, for that fact, to those infected with this dreadful disease.” – Pat Robertson, in a statement emailed by his head publicist for the 700 Club.

There is absolutely no way that Robertson’s original comment could have been misinterpreted.

By Robertson using the excuse that he wasn’t spreading a vicious, disgusting lie about people currently infected with AIDS but was spreading a vicious, disgusting lie about people who were infected with AIDS years ago again is disgusting and proves that he’s well aware that it is indeed a hateful piece of anti-gay propaganda land has no problem using it until caught.

OMFG! – Pat Robertson: Gay Men Use Special Rings To Cut People And Give Them AIDS – Video

Pat Robertson evil

In what has to be the worst and most horrible lie that has come out of Pat Robertson’s mouth in his history of anti-gay hate, today on the 700 Club Robertson claimed that gay men n cities like San Francisco and New York attempt to spread HIV/AIDS to others by cutting them with a special ring when shaking hands.

ENOUGH!

Call CBN at (757) 226-7000.and DEMAND that they not only retract but force a Pat Robertson to apologize on air for his  outrageous lies.

And where the hell is GLAAD?

UPDATE: Robertson responds.
