Gay History – April 23, 1791: President James “Mr. Fancy” Buchanan Born.

April 23, 1791

James Buchanan was born near Mercerburg, Pennsylvania on April 23, 1791.  He served as the  15th president of the United States and was the only “life-long bachelor” to serve in that office.

Historian James W. Loewen who has done extensive research into Buchanan’s personal life, and is convinced Buchanan was gay. Loewen is the author of the acclaimed book “Lies Across America,” which examines how historical sites inaccurately portray figures and events in America’s past. “I’m sure that Buchanan was gay,” Loewen said. “There is clear evidence that he was gay. And since I haven’t seen any evidence that he was heterosexual, and I don’t believe he was bisexual.”

According to Loewen, Buchanan shared a residence with William Rufus King, a Democratic senator from Alabama, for several years in Washington, D.C. – King  was called “Miss Fancy” by his detractors, making the soon to be President “Mr Fancy.”

Buchanan was “fairly open” about his relationship with King, causing some colleagues to view the men as a couple. For example, Aaron Brown, a prominent Democrat, writing to Mrs. James K. Polk, referred to King as Buchanan’s “better half,” “his wife”.

In 1844, when King was appointed minister to France, he wrote Buchanan, “I am selfish enough to hope you will not be able to procure an associate who will cause you to feel no regret at our separation.”

In one letter to a confidante dated May 13, 1844, Buchanan wrote about his life after King moved to Paris to become the American ambassador to France:

“I am now ‘solitary and alone,’ having no companion in the house with me. I have gone a wooing to several gentlemen, but have not succeeded with any one of them. I feel that it is not good for man to be alone; and should not be astonished to find myself married to some old maid who can nurse me when I am sick, provide good dinners for me when I am well, and not expect from me any very ardent or romantic affection.”

Their relationship — though interrupted due to foreign-service obligations — ended only with King’s death in 1853.

Patrick Clarke, the director of Wheatland, Mansion in Lancaster, Pa., where Buchanan spent his later years. said that the staff at Wheatland now takes a neutral stance on Buchanan’s sexual or affectional preference.

“There’s no solid proof that Buchanan was heterosexual, nor is there solid proof that he was homosexual,” Clarke said. “If we ever come up with a smoking gun that proves it one way or the other, I would definitely encourage our staff to share it with the public.”

OUTED! – The Most Self-Loathing Closet Cases Exposed! – Video Compilation

Here’s a video compilation of some of the most notorious self-loathing homophobe closet-cases who have been outed in recent years.

Gay Traitor Ken Mehlman Launches Non-Profit to Attract GOP to Fight for Marriage Equality

Loathsome former closet-case and  RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman who at one time was  George W Bush’s campaign manager and directly helped 21 states pass laws that banned same-sex marriage,  it unconstitutional and ruined hundred of thousands of LGBT lives ” has launched Project Right Side, a non-profit aimed at attracting conservatives to the fight for marriage equality.

Writes Mehlman in a WSJ op-ed announcing the project:

Some misperceive the issue of marriage equality as exclusively progressive. Yet what could be more conservative than support for more freedom and less government? And what freedom is more basic than the right to marry the person you love? Smaller, less intrusive government surely includes an individual deciding whom to marry. Allowing civil marriage for same-sex couples will cultivate community stability, encourage fidelity and commitment, and foster family values.

Mehlman argues that same-sex marriage is an idea conservatives should embrace:

Conservatives don’t need to change core convictions to embrace the growing support for equal rights for gay Americans. It is sufficient to recognize the inherent conservatism in citizens’ desire to marry, to be judged on their work, and not to be singled out for higher taxes or bullying at school. These objectives can be achieved while also protecting religious liberty, as demonstrated by states enacting civil marriage with exemptions for religious institutions.

To help Republicans appreciate this changing environment, I helped establish Project Right Side, which commissioned leading GOP polling firm Target Point to survey 16,000 voters over the past year, over-sampling Republican and swing voters in battleground states, including 2,000 such voters on Election Night.

Well isn;t that special?

The man who was responsible for demonizing gays during the Bush years so the GOP could keep political power while standing in his Wayerford cryatal closet and making MILLIONS of dollars off the GOP has stated a non-profit to help the GOP see the light of gay.

Not only is this a little too little a little too late and comes nowhere near making up for the damage that Mehlman did to the LGBT community during his reign of terror.  It’s also nothing more than utter PR bullshit for Mehlman who is still donating heavily to anti-gay GOP candidates and who recently  co-chaired a re-election fundraiser for John Boehner the man who has vowed to stop the overturning of DOMA and who  tripled the legal budget of Congress  to defend the unconstitutional law after President Obama and the DOJ said they would no longer continue to.

Mehlman is a disgusting opportunist and now that he is “out” and trying to live as an openly gay man his past is haunting him.  Many in out community loath him and rightfully so and he knows that.  If he were doing this from his heart I might agree that “better late than never” and “forget the past” but he’s supporting marriage equality now for the EXACT same reasons that he used it against us and Democrats in 2004 and years thereafter; because he believes that being FOR marriage equality is NOW A POLITICAL AND PERSONAL  WINNER FOR HIM AND HIM ALONE.

Mehlman bullied us and kicked sand in our faces, hurt our families and used us to serve your own ends when it suited him and now he is doing nothing but the same.

And don’t  be surprised if the Human Rights Campaign and Gay Inc. applaud Ken Hehlman for this,   Mehlman has money, and if it’s the one thing that the HRC loves it money and they will have no problem taking  it from Mehlman and defending him even though Ken Mehlman’s legacy is no better than Roy Cohn’s.

Integrity in the Gay Inc. is non-existent.

As for Mehlman you are a disgrace.  And while you may fool some.  You do not fool me and others.

You deserve your legacy of being the most hated gay man in America.

You are a digrace to our commnity and humanity.

The Mehlman Syndrome – Republican Kirk Fordham Named Head Of The Gill Action Fund

The Gill Action Fund is an  issue advocacy organization founded in 2005 by philanthropist and entrepreneur Tim Gill to provide resources to individuals and organizations on both the Democratic and Republican side of the aisle working to advance equality for LGBT people through the legislative, political, and electoral process..

Tim Gill today has announced that he has named Kirk Fordham, a gay Republican the new head of his Action Fund,” who the Denver Post reports first political job was working for then-U.S. Rep. Jim Imhofe, a conservative Oklahoman

Many LGBT “advocates” and even the The Victory Fund is praising the choice saying: ”Kirk practices a bi-partisan approach to problem-solving that has earned him the respect of many friends on both sides of the aisle.

But here’s the problem.  What they DON’T mention is that Kirk was Chief of Staff for the anti-gay closet case Mark Foley and hateful Tom Reynolds or that Kirk was directly involved in an effort to cover up Foley’s instant messages and contacts with 16 year old pages.  It seems we are to simply forget that Kirk’s Washington career took place during the most anti-lgbt administration years and he was a Republican first and a gay man second pocketing money and furthering his GOP career upon the backs of the LGBT community

This is just ANOTHER of gay whitewash’s that has been happening in the press and our community when it comes to “gay republicans” who did some heinous things in the past and participated in the most anti-gay elections in US history and not being held accountable “because they might be able to do some good”

The idea of hiring Kirk and embracing Mehlman to bridge this gap between the GOP and and LGBT Equality is delusional at best and a strategy that is so flawed it will just push us even further back.  We need to face facts if Ronald Reagan himself came back from the grave and urged Republicans to vote for LGBT equality, it would not make too much of a difference, as long as the GOP is controlled by crazed extremists.

The utter lack of integrity, strength, and a winning strategy within the LGBT Community, its organizations and its media is the real downfall of our community and why we get no where fast.

Ex-RNC Head And NEWLY “Gay” Ken Mehlman To Co-Chair John Boehner Re-Election Fundraiser

By now everyone should be aware who Ken Mehlman is.

Mehlman who was the head of the RNC during the Bush years was responsible for helping 21 states pushing through their own DOMA laws and helping to destroy hundreds of thousands of gays and lesbian lives while all the while living in a glass closet.

In 2010 Mehlman, who was retired from politics came out, threw some money at HRC and the Trevor Project and became a self-proclaimed supporters of LGBT rights and even helped New York (which he calls home) pass a same sex marriage law.

Many in the LGBT community and especially Gay Inc. gave Mehlman the benefit of the doubt, and a pass hoping to cash in on his political ties and his huge bank account. But in recent months its come to light that Mehlman is still donating heavily to anti-gay GOP candidates and now will be co-chairing a re-election fundraiser for John Boehner the man who has vowed to stop the overturning of DOMA and who  tripled the legal budget of Congress  to defend the unconstitutional law after President Obama and the DOJ said they would no longer continue to.

The same John BONER Boehner who also:

  • Voted NO on prohibiting job discrimination based on sexual orientation.
  • Voted YES on Constitutionally defining marriage as one-man-one-woman.
  • Voted YES on Constitutional Amendment banning same-sex marriage.
  • Voted YES on banning gay adoptions in DC.
  • Voted against The Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act
  • Rated 7% by the ACLU, indicating an anti-civil rights voting record.
  • Rated 0% by the HRC, indicating an anti-gay-rights stance.
  • Rated 28% by the NAACP, indicating an anti-affirmative-action stance.

A leopard doesn’t change its spots and neither has Ken Mehlman. He was a self loathing GOP prick before he came out, and now that he’s out, he’s still a self loathing GOP prick.

When Mehlman first announced his alleged change of heart, there were many people, groups like the HRC, and mainstream gay media outlets saying that he deserved the benefit of the doubt, we ought to welcome him and take the high road and not beat him over the head for his past, etc. At the time, I thought the people saying those sorts of things gave every appearance of having manure for brains.

It looks as if I was right..

Somewhere in hell Roy Cohn is giggling madly

Former RNC Chair Ken Mehlman Helped Gay Marriage In NY But Still Donates Heavily To Anti-Gay GOP

During his time as George W Bush’s campaign manager and afterwards as chairman of the Republican National Committee, Ken Mehlman helped 21 states pass laws that banned same-sex marriage and helped lead the assault on the LGBT community by Republicans

In August 2010 Mehlman came out of the closet and confessed he was gay (a well known fact in DC and no surprise to beltway insiders)  and sensing money and some political clout the HRC immediately embraced Mehlman with Joe Solmonese stating:  “The past is the past. We certainly don’t have the luxury at this point in our movement to turn away any offer of help.” and HRC spokesman Michael Cole Schwartz adding: ““What’s important is that Ken has joined the fight and is willing to lend his considerable talent and influence to advance equality. While the past cannot be overlooked, our future is far more important and with more and more people like Ken joining our movement, that future holds great promise.”-

But while the HRC was embracing Mehlman others remembered the pain he had caused the LGBT community and his hand in destroying thousands of LGBT lives during his tenure in the GOP.

Mike Rogers, blogger, owner of Raw Story and gay rights activist in the Washington, D.C is best known for his activity in outing closeted gay politicians who actively oppose gay rights had this to say about Ken Mehlman’s “redemption”:

Can Ken Mehlman redeem himself? I want to hear from Ken that he is sorry for being the architect of the 2004 Bush reelection campaign. I want to hear from Ken that he is sorry for his role in developing strategy that resulted in George W. Bush threatening to veto ENDA or any bill containing hate crimes laws. I want to hear from Ken that he is sorry for the pressing of two Federal Marriage Amendments as political tools. I want to hear from Ken that he is sorry for developing the 72-hour strategy, using homophobic churches to become political arms of the GOP before Election Day.

And those state marriage amendments. I want to hear him apologize for every one of those, too.

And then there is one other little thing. You see, while you and I had the horrible feelings of being treated so poorly by our President, while teens were receiving the messaging ‘gay is bad’ giving them ‘permission’ to gay bash, while our rights were being stripped state by state, Ken was out there laughing all the way to the bank. So, if Ken is really sorry, and he very well may be, then all he needs to do is sell his condo and donate the funds to the causes he worked against so hard for all those years. He’s done a lot of damage to a lot of organizations, while making a lot of moeny. A LOT of money. It’s time to put his money where his mouth is. Ken Mehlman is sitting in a $3,770,000.00 (that’s $3.77 million) condo in Chelsea while we have lost our right to marry in almost 40 states.

Since Mehlman’s coming out he did indeed help New York secure same sex marriage meeting with four Republican state senators who eventually voted in favor of the bill.  And afterwards as if by magic Mehlman’s years of destruction  against our community was erased from view with OUT magazine even naming him one of the TOP 100 LGBT’s In America

But has Mehlman changed?  REALLY?  Or is he just scamming us?

A recent look at OpenSecrets.org shows that over the past year Ken Mehlman has donated over $25,000 to anti-gay GOP candidates including Marco Rubio, Peter Roskum and Orin Hatch and also the Republican National Commitee which spreads its money around to the likes of Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich.

Is Mehlman playing both sides?  He must have known that many think of him as America’s most heinous homosexual, actively participating in and driving the demonetization of his own community in exchange for political applause and cold hard cash during his years with Bush and the RNC.  Could his “help” after coming out be nothing more than trying to make his own life easier in the community while all the time still supporting those who are still actively trying to deny us our inalienable rights?

Is Mehlman playing both sides against the middle for his own gain?

But the bigger question is does our community actually have the integrity to call him out on it?

OUT Magazine Responds (Sort Of) To The Major Controversy Of Naming Ken Mehlman To Its Top 100 List

Yesterday after OUT Magazine let it be known that it was naming ex-RNC Chair Ken Mehlman who in 2004, as Bush’s campaign manager, helped use gay marriage in order to get conservatives to the polls and made sure there were votes to outlaw gay marriage in 11 states to thier TOP 100  list he shit really hit the fan.

OUT Magazine scrambled to cover itself posting almost immediately in their POPNOGRAPHY section to state:

The Out100 recognizes the most compelling people of the year, so of course it’s going to include some notables that also spark controversy. Today we announced a few more names, including Ken Mehlman, who is being honored in the Out100.

Out magazine also went to list Mehlman’s OUT 100 citation:

(Mehlman) the most influential Republican in history to identify as gay and went on to play a quietly instrumental role in winning support for marriage equality in New York State, lobbying politicians in Albany and raising money for New Yorkers for Marriage Equality. “As someone who came out late in life, I can attest to the fact that it gets better,” he says. “For a state as big and iconic as New York to be able to have accomplished marriage equality with a bipartisan approach was a momentous event, and one I was honored to play a small part in.”

Bryan Moylan of GAWKER Responds:

Now he’s out and proud and lobbying for gay marriage. Well, that is well and good, but shouldn’t he have been fighting for gay marriage, oh, I don’t know, when he was helping to run the Republican party? Shouldn’t he have cared how these votes were going to go before they happened rather than fighting to reverse them now that they have?

Thanks to Ken Mehlman, we need to fight even harder to achieve marriage equality in all 50 states. Good thing he’s going to help, because it’s going to take a lot of extra work to reach that goal, in part due to his handiwork.  At the time I was working at the Washington Blade the country’s oldest and largest gay newspaper and we tried like hell to find proof of the gay rumors so that we could out the bastard while he was still in power. We never got the chance, and he came out himself in 2010.

And judging by the comments left on OUT’s website controversy is going to be the least of their problems.

***This is truly sickening. Do you know how many LGBT lives Ken Mehlman destroyed and how many military careers he ended with his Bush/Cheney alliance? He was even involved in that sickening mailer with the Bible crossed out and a sillouhette of two gay men intended to inflame homophobic attacks and murders. Why aren’t Larry Craig and Ted Haggard on the list if nothing matters? – John Macon Brewster
***You have just rendered the “OUT 100” as something I can utterly ignore as meaningless. Here’s a little perspective for you: Frank Kameny, WWII vet, was an out gay man as of 1958, and this Harvard astrophysicist lost jobs because of it; in his senior years, he could barely keep a roof over his head, but when he died last month he was a gay civil rights legend. Ken Mehlman got wealthy leading the GOP to victory on the back of anti-gay ballot initiatives; when he belatedly came out in 2010, he bought himself a 3.775 million condo in Chelsea on his ill-gotten riches.  And you chose Mehlman.Christian Cooper
***A more complicated track record…” You’re kidding, right? Purposefully orchestrating anti-LGBT legislation on behalf of the Bush Administration for years? This has to be a joke. Internalized homophobia and self-hatred rear their ugly heads again. This time with the editors of OUT magazine. – Ian Jensen
And those are just a few of the nicer comments.

If Regent Media (which owns OUT) thinks it was in trouble before due to Bank of America suing it for fraud (alleging the company owes $90 million in unpaid loans instead of getting logbook loans from other places).  By the looks of this backlash it ain’t seen nothing yet.

OUT Magazine Names Ken Mehlman Who Destroyed MILLIONS Of LGBT Lives To Their Top 100 List

OUT Magizine has named recently OUT and “suppossedly” repentative Ken Mehlman former Chairman of the Republican National Committee to its list of the TOP 100 LGBT List.

Mehlman who from 2005 to 2007 and George Bush’s henchmen who supported and fought for the social positions of the Republican Party, including opposition to same-sex marriage and helped craft numerous anti-gay statewide campaigns and set the groundwork that has destroyed MILLIONS of lives and greatly hurt our fight for equality while being in the closet and doing his job wih no regret.

In August, 2010 Mehlman came out publically as being gay and has since done some nominal work helping get same sex marriage passed in NYC.  But does that forgive all the harm he did willingly or erase what Mehlman did so far to be named one of the Top 100 Openly LGBT Americans.

Joe Jervis over at Joe My God sums it up:

For all those millions of people made miserable by Ken Mehlman? Forgiven. The kids who killed themselves because of relentlessly vicious campaigns spawned by Ken Mehlman? Forgotten. The anti-gay politicians funded last year by Ken Mehlman? Ignored.

THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!

Mehlman is the epitome of the the naked opportunist, whose actions have shown a willingness to throw the rest of us under the bus as a sacrifice to the republican god of “I got Mine.” I’m sure it was only when he felt he could gain professional or financial advantage that he decided to come out.

There are so many other LGBT people who sacrifice and fight everyday of thier lives and stand for the community and that should have been honored but instead OUT Magazine chose to honor a person who helped orchestrate our pain, suffering and inequality and just because he said “I’m sorry” and has shown a minor bit of repentance that does not even come close  fixing the mess that he made and the hell he created for the LGBT community OUT Magazine chose him instead.

Video – Newly "Pro Gay" Ken Mehlman Ridiculed In New York Bar After Same Sex Marriage Passage In NY

Ken Mehlman, the former RNC President who worked with George Bush and is  responsible for the anti-gay rights mess we are currently in was confronted by gay activist Jon Winkleman while celebrating the New York victory on Friday night.

For those of you who missed.  Self loathing homo Mehlman pushed anti-gay measures for years recently when he came bursting out of the closet (although EVERYONE knew, said he was sorry, and is now pro-gay rights. (Sorry because he’s not being paid to be anti-gay rights anymore)

Said Winkleman: “I know he helped with the efforts to pass marriage in NY but he still supports those who do us harm. Also his cynical anti-LGBT campaigns at the RNC fanned the flames of hate and violent hate crimes increased in the districts they focused. LGBT people were hurt…physically, because of Mehlman’s actions. So of course I had to go over and say something.”

Ken Meklman Up To His Old Self Loathing Homo Tricks, Endorsing Anti-Gay NY Republican Congressional Candidate Randy Altschuler

Politico.com got it’s hands on an invite for fundraiser invite toNY GOP Congressional candidate Randy Altschuler’s soiree on Septemeber 27th and listed in the  “who’s who” of host committee includes none other than Ken “I fucked you all withiout lube” Mehlman.

And guess what?  Altschuler “pro-family values”, toeing the religious right-wing conservative line.  Anti-gay, anti-women, and anti-minority.  Altschuler also made MILLIONS outsourcing jobs from America
