Gay History – Remembering Bisexual Actor Brad Davis Who Fought For Work and Dignity While Battling AIDS

Actor Brad Davis: –  Born Robert Davis on this day November 6th, 1949 to Eugene Davis (a dentist from Beverly Hills whose career declined due to alcoholism) and his wife, Anne (née Creel) Davis. According to an article in The New York Times published in 1987, Davis suffered both physical abuse and sexual abuse at the hands of both parents. As an adult, he was an alcoholic and an intravenous drug user before becoming sober in 1981.  Brad Davis took his stage name after learning that there already was a Bob Davis registered in Actors Equity. Acting was always his ambition, from appearing in productions at Theater Atlanta at the age of sixteen, and moving to New York to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and at the American Place Theater. Television roles soon followed, in a short-lived soap opera and in the miniseries Roots and Sybil (both 1976). But it was his role as Billy Hayes in the film Midnight Express which rocketed him to fame and won him two Golden Globes.

Davis’s career should have taken off. Instead, it languished, due somewhat to homophobia — his bisexuality was generally known if not always acknowledged — and more directly due to his own drug and alcohol abuse. In 1976, he was cast in the television mini-series Roots, then as Sally Field’s love interest in the television film Sybil. In 1981 he sobered in time to take a minor role in Chariots of Fire he played American track star Jackson Scholz in the Academy Award winning film Chariots of Fire. . In 1983, he took a professional risk playing a gay sailor in Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s Querelle (which flopped), and a dying man of AIDS in Larry Kramer’s play The Normal Heart.  That last role mirrored, somewhat, his own life.

Diagnosed with HIV in 1985, Davis kept his condition a secret until shortly before his death at age 41,  in order to be able to continue to work and support his family.

His wife, freelance casting director Susan Bluestein said: “The Hollywood community may deny it. They will say he could have worked. All I know is that my husband was frightened, and that he wanted to be able to keep putting food on our table for his family,”

Davis was going to write a book about his ordeal of working in Hollywood and having to keep secret his illness. While he died before he could accomplish that his wife did write a book using Davis’ book proposal as the basis for her book, After Midnight: The Life and Death of Brad Davis.

”I make my money in an industry that professes to care very much about the fight against AIDS — that gives umpteem benefits and charity affairs with proceeds going to research and care — but in actual fact, if an actor is even rumored to have H.I.V., he gets no support on an individual basis. He does not work.”

In a 1997 interview with New York Times writer Alex Witchel, Davis’ wife described the great pains he went to seeking medical help only allowing doctors to visit him at home, ”Without the secrecy he may not have gotten better medical care, but earlier medical care,” she said. ”It might have given him a little longer time and better quality of life. We became so isolated. He let a lot of friendships go. He was afraid certain people would pick up on some things. Our world shrank to the bare bones.” In order to hide his illness Witchel wrote that Davis didn’t buy prescriptions in his name but was supplied with prescription “leftovers” from others after they died.

When Brad Davis died on September 8, 1991,  news reports distinguished him as “the first heterosexual actor to die of AIDS.” Not much of that description was true. His bi-exuality aside, he didn’t, strictly speaking, die of AIDS. Davis decided to end his life on his own terms by committing suicide by drug overdose when it became clear that his death from AIDS was imminent.

Director Oliver Stone Thinks Russia’s Anti-Gay Law Is “Sensible”

Director Oliver Stone Thinks Russia’s Anti-Gay Law Is “Sensible”

The Daily Beast reports:

Filmmaker and conspiracy theorist Oliver Stone has made no secret of his admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin, but now he has taken it to a whole new level by trying to make him his 22-year-old daughter’s godfather. “Does she want to become an Orthodox Christian?” Putin asked when Stone floated the idea during a sit-down in the Kremlin.

Putin appeared to wriggle his way out of the proposal (“You have to ask her,” he said) before Stone went on to complain about “American culture,” taking particular issue with what he described as a focus on gender identity and people labeling themselves as “transgender” and “cisgender.”

Stone quickly steered the conversation toward a controversial 2013 Russian law banning “homosexual propaganda” among minors, a law which experts say has prompted a surge of homophobic violence in the country. “It seems like maybe that’s a sensible law,” Stone said.

Oliver Stone endorsed Jill Stein in 2016, take that conspiracy theory as you will.

Gay History – November 9th: Rock Hudson’s Beard, The Rose, and SNL’s First Gay Cast Member

November 9th:

1955 – Rock Hudson marries his agent’s secretary to squelch rumors about his sexual orientation. Rumours which were unknown to Phyllis Gates who became Hudson’s wife.  That is of course until Phyllis had hired  private eye Fred Otash who then in turn secretly taped Rock’s and Phyllis’ personal conversations.

Via The Hollywood Reporter:

On January 21, 1958, Rock Hudson’s wife confronted him, demanding to know if he was gay and grilling the actor about a Rorschach test he had taken. “You told me you saw thousands of butterflies and also snakes,” she said “[A therapist] told me in my analysis that butterflies mean femininity and snakes represent that male penis. I’m not condemning you, but it seems that as long as you recognize your problem, you would want to do something about it.” She also complained about “your great speed with me, sexually. Are you that fast with boys?”

“Well, it’s a physical conjunction [sic],” replied Rock, then 32. “Boys don’t fit. So, this is why it lasts longer.”

Added Phyllis: “Everyone knows that you were picking up boys off the street shortly after we were married and have continued to do so, thinking that being married would cover up for you.”

“I have never picked up any boys on the street,” Rock insisted. “I have never picked up any boys in a bar, never. I have never picked up any boys, other than to give them a ride.”

Well we all know how this story ends.

1979 – Bette Midler’s first movie, The Rose, opens in theaters and leads to an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for the Divine Miss M.

The Rose  is the story of a self-destructive 1960s rock star who struggles to cope with the constant pressures of her career and the demands of her ruthless business manager.

The story is loosely based on the life of singer Janis Joplin. Originally titled Pearl, after Joplin’s nickname, and the title of her last album, it was fictionalized after her family declined to allow the producers the rights to her story.

Bette performed the soundtrack album for the film, and the title track became one of her biggest hit singles.

1985 – Openly gay Terry Sweeney joined the cast of Saturday Night Live.

Sweeney’s run on the show came at a time when there were few openly gay characters or actors on television. For roughly 27 years, there were no other openly gay cast members on SNL, until Kate McKinnon (a former cast member of Logo’s The Big Gay Sketch Show) was added to the cast in April 2012.

Gay Hollywood Agent Tyler Grasham Fired After Sexual Assault Allegations

Two men have have come forward and accused Tyler Grasham a talent agent at APA of sexually assaulting them.

Via Deadline:

Former child actor Blaise Godbe Lipman, 28, says agent Tyler Grasham assaulted him 10 years ago when he was seeking representation. “Tyler Grasham, under the pretense of a business meeting regarding potential agency representation at APA Agency, fed me alcohol while I was underage and sexually assaulted me,” he wrote Monday on Facebook.

Lucas Ozarowski, a 27-year-old film and TV editor, says he also was assaulted by Grasham. He said he has contacted Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer with the story and will file a report with the LAPD today.

Lipman posted that the recent revelations about Harvey Weinstein gave him the courage to finally come forward with his story.

“The positive thing about the attention the Weinstein scandal has had, is it’s no longer about Harvey,” he wrote. “The conversation has moved on to the size of this epidemic and how to dismantle the system that protects these predators. And it’s given space and courage for victims to speak up, against their abuse. This is bigger than Weinstein.”

A spokesman for APA Agency confirmed the termination Friday. “Tyler Grasham’s employment has been terminated with APA effective immediately,”

One employee noted that it “has been a hard few days at the agency,” but they are indeed trying to place Grasham’s clients with other agents inside APA.

Actor Matthew McConaughey: We Have No Choice But To Embrace Donald Trump, He’s Our President

In an interview with the BBC’s Andrew Marr, McConaughey was asked by Marr if it was time “the cultural elite of America should give [Trump] a break”. McConaughey, in the UK to promote his new film Gold, replied: Well, they don’t have a choice now. He’s our president. And it’s very dynamic and as divisive of an inauguration and time we’ve ever had. At the same time, it’s time for us to embrace and shake hands with this fact and be constructive with him over the next four years.”

McConaughey added: “Even those who most strongly disagree with his principles, or what he’s said and done. Which is another thing: we’ll see what he does compared to what he had said. No matter how much you disagreed along the way, it’s time to think about how constructive you can be, because he’s our president for the next four years – at least.”

Brent Corrigan Lashes Out At James Franco’s Real Life Porn Drama King Cobra: “It’s Heinous and Unsanctioned”

Brent Corrigan Lashes Out At James Franco's Real Life Porn Drama"King Cobra": "It's Heinous and Unsanctioned"

James Franco’s upcoming movie “King Cobra” is billed as a “deliciously dark, twisted plunge into the behind-the-scenes world of the pornography industry,” but not everyone, especially one of the real-life people portrayed in the movie is excited about an upcoming film about the notorious murder of porn producer Bryan Kocis.

The movie, based on actual events  of the January 2007 Dallas Township slaying in which two of Kocis’ rivals in the gay porn industry nearly decapitated him before killing him and torching his house.

James Franco play Joseph Kerekes, an escort and fledgling porn website producer along with his lover and business partner Harlow Raymond Cuadra (Keegan Allen) they begin a quest to steal Kocis’ (Played by Christian Slater and renamed Stephen in the film) star performer, the youthful-looking Sean Lockhart, known by the stage name Brent Corrigan and then things get out of hand.

Kocis’ family was not pleased when they recently learned Hollywood had taken an interest in exploiting their son’s gruesome death.

“He was the victim. … We’re the ones that suffer from it,” Kocis’ mother Joyce Kocis said. “It’s 9½years. It’s just ridiculous.”

Lockhart (Corrigan) is also not happy with the film and has stated that though he was asked to be part of the film, he had no desire to help the filmmakers recreate a “bastardized” version of the truth.

“It’s made. And it’s not about me. It’s Hollywood’s attempt at bastardizing my early years in porn, one man’s murder, blah blah,” Lockhart wrote on his Twitter account under his stage name. “I’ve said it many times before, I’m not about telling someone else’s idea of how events in my life unfolded. … It doesn’t matter what A-list celebrity is involved. The screenplay and content didn’t jive (sic). I passed it up.”

There is no report of how much Franco paid Lockhart/Corrigan for the use of his name.

Perhaps not coincidentally, Lockhart/Corrigan is playing to release an autobiography, detailing his own take on what happened.

But will the film include the facts that James Dean was gay or at the very least bisexual, into S&M and dabbled in a P/T career as a  male prostitute?

According to advance film festival reviews the answer is no.

OMFG! Joel Grey Is GAY! – Broadway Legend Joel Grey Comes Out At 82

Joel grey

Joel Grey  coming out today in People Magazine.

It was different for a man of his generation. Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of noted actor-comedian Mickey Katz, Grey remembers “hearing the grownups talk in the next room, my mother included, talking derisively about ‘fairies’ and men being dragged off to jail and even worse for being who they were.” At about the same time, he says, “I came to realize, along with being attracted to girls, I had similar feelings for boys.” Grey didn’t reveal his truth for many more years to come. He was married to actress Jo Wilder for 24 years, a period he calls “the happiest of my life.” Together they have two children: actress Jennifer Grey and son James, a chef. “I feel very happy for my dad that he has come to a point in his life where he feels safe and comfortable enough to declare himself in a public way as a gay man,” Jennifer tells PEOPLE.

“I don’t like labels, but if you have to put a label on it, I’m a gay man. All the people close to me have known for years who I am.  [Yet] it took time to embrace that other part of who I always was.” Grey said.

Which I am sure was especially easy well after your career is over and you are 82 years old.
