Just two days before their scheduled wedding, Charles and Te’Andrea Wilson were forced to change venues after the Rev. Stan Weatherford told them that some church members were uncomfortable with the black couple getting married in the predominantly white church First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs, Mississippi.
The 150-year-old church hasn’t had any black couples married there in modern times.
Mississippi Baptist Convention Executive Director the Rev. Jim Futral said what happened was “unfortunate“: “It’s not reflective of the spirit of the Lord and Mississippi Baptists,” Futral said. “It’s just a step backward. … It’s a sad thing.”
(feinging surprise) Racism and Homophobia both in the Baptist Church and in Mississippi. It just can’t be!
The University Club, a popular downtown Moline, Illinois event hall and club is refusing to hold a lesbian couple’s wedding reception because serving homosexuals conflicts with the manager’s “religious beliefs”.

In a phone interview with WQAD, Stewart says it is all true, and defended her right to refusal.
“I am a biblical Christian and I do not believe in homosexual marriage, that’s correct. And because marriage is a covenant that God created for man and woman, as a biblical Christian, I cannot help them into or celebrate that sin,” said Stewart. Stewart is the wife of the president of the University Club, and daughter-in-law of its owners.
She says the family discussed the issue of gay marriage receptions after neighboring state Iowa approved same-sex marriage and Illinois endorsed civil unions.
