Westboro Baptist Church Vows To Picket GLEE Star Cory Monteith’s Funeral

Most evil

While the White House refuses to officially recognize that the Westboro Baptist Church  is a hate group after receiving five separate petitions with nearly 675,000 signatures demanding that they do so.  And the IRS allows to let WBC keep their tax-exempt status. Just  hours after the tragic death of GLEE actor Corey Monteith ,  Shirley Phelps – Roper the de-facto leader of the human excrement filled “church” tweeted  that the WBC would be picketing the Monteith’’s funeral, claiming he was “struck down by raging mad God” for working as a “fag enabler” alongside Chris Colfer, who stars as the show’s openly gay teenager.

Roper, who expressed joy for the death of children in Oklahoma’s recent tornadoes and the Sandy Hook Elementary shootings, then took the time to tweet individual members of the Glee cast to “Praise God Almighty” for the untimely death of their co-star.

Fortunately with Monteith being from a civilized country like Canada, that recognizes hate and evil for what it is ulike the USA the WBC may not get a chance to take their freak-show north.  The hate group was turned away at the Canadian border in 2008 after planning to protest the funeral of a 22-year-old murder victim, and has officially been banned from preaching anywhere in Great Britain.

No President Obama and the White House.  The WBC is not a hate group at all.

Insane.

See How Shows Like ‘The New Normal’ & ‘Glee’ Possibly Affect Politics

I know I know more politics talk but you may be as intrigued as I am by this new study. According to The Hollywood Reporter pollster Jon Penn, shows like The New Normal, Glee, and Modern Family may have a more progressive effect than previously believed.

I know that shows like these get a lot of flack from the LGBT community because of the perceived lack of full, real life depth to the LGBT characters portrayed. But think of the influence and doorways to education and understanding that can come from it to those that maybe aren’t in heavily populated LGBT populations? How can something like this be possible you say? Well look at the numbers as Penn suggests:

“This data would suggest that seeing this stuff makes it more socially acceptable. Views on gay marriage have exponentially gone in its favor since 2002.”

The data also shows that demographics like age do affect these perceptions on LGBT issues like marriage equality end possibly influence viewers:

“Views on gay marriage are totally defined by age. Almost twice as many voters under 35 say these shows made them more in favor of gay marriage compared with voters over 35 — 38 percent versus just 20 percent. Impressionable young people are more open to changing their views and behavior, based on what they’re watching. Of all voters, 42 percent say gay marriage on TV has made them more aware and active on the issue,” says Penn, “but this skews heavily towards viewers under 35 (55 percent) versus those over 35 (36 percent).”

So the younger adult audiences are more likely to have an open mind to at the very least question the when where and why of their core beliefs. It doesn’t seem like much, but ask yourself; would you rather people continue with having no visual emphasis to base an opinion or these shows that sometimes lack depth that leads to viewers asking questions about who we really are? Visibility is always important, and though at time shaky, could lead to understanding.

Sex Starved, Musically Inclined High Schoolers To Invade Riverside! – Archie Meets GLEE!

Well it looks like the GLEE gang is taking a roadtrip from Lima, OH to Riverdale to visit the Archie gang!

BuzzFeed has debuted Dan Parent’s cover for Archie #641, the first issue of a storyline in which the Glee kids visit Riverdale and will hangout with Archie, Betty, Veronica, Kevin and Jughead and the hillarity will ensure.

Announced in July, the crossover is penned by comics writer and Glee co-producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and illustrated by Parent, and arrives on the heels of publisher’s much-publicized “Archie meets KISS” storyline.”

Archie Comics Co-CEO Jon Goldwater told Comic Book Resources. “What I’ve been trying to establish in Riverdale is that the characters stay the same, but Riverdale changes. And as musicians change in the culture, they can seamlessly integrate into comic books.”

I so hope Kurt hits on Reggie and forces him to come out.  But knowing that character he’ll probably join GOProud.

Has Hollywood Made LGBT Characters Too Stereotypical Gay?

Do you think Hollywood is doing a good job with LGBT characters? Can you identify with these characters at all or are they too stereotypical and way over the top? Here’s two sides to the argument. First, I came across an article from the New York Post today that feels Hollywood has done a horrific job in it’s portrayal of LGBT characters. The writer generalizes these Hollywood characters saying they’re “so screamingly stupid” .

Also, the writer assesses the male gay characters from shows like Glee and Modern Family as “limp white boys and scary” and compared the portrayal of lesbians as “sexually predatory girls”.  The writer says these characters are so damning that they make the bold  assertion that “it’s enough to drive the gay-rights movement back underground.” while these portrayals will be used by “delight loyalists of Chick-fil-A” and overall these characters are “self-loathing.

The writer feels that these LGBT character portrayals are detrimental and  as a result it’s “an awkward moment for TV land to give so much ammunition to the religious right”. So what because of the religious conservative right we shouldn’t have these characters on tv? Other then one dimensional thinking the writer doesn’t provide any solid evidence to support this claim.

Further, the writer received commentary from Williamson Henderson, Director of Stonewall Veterans Association, named for the 1969 Greenich Village Riots. Henderson felt as though the portrayals of LGBT are relegated to “wimpy characters, crying” and that“they don’t represent gay people in a productive and positive sense” .

Henderson also discussed Chaz Bono son of Cher and DTWS contest, who is female to male transgender, and the controversy surrounding the dance competition saying “it was the clowning of the GLBT community,’’ and that “they were using him as a weapon to attract those who don’t support gay rights. He did more harm than good”.

Okay, let’s look at another side of this debate. The counter argument suggests that these LGBT characters are an asset, not a detriment. University of Michigan’s Professor Edward Schiappa, who studies communication, did research on these varying shows finding that overall, “TV and movie representation matters”. Schiappa compared data from five studies concluding that prejudices towards LGBT showed a decrease and noted while “these attitude changes are not huge — they don’t change bigots into saints. But they can snowball”.

Look, I’ll be the first to admit that there is a significant lack of diversity for LGBT characters in Hollywood. I want to see well thought out multi-dimensional characters in film, sitcoms, drams, playrights and all other mediums. But there are some positive aspects to these characters too.

Growing up during the 80s and 90s I can’t vividly remember one LGBT character in any of the tv shows I watched. I know not all visibility in causes are good, but I definitely don’t think the examples provided by the writer of this article are all bad either. What do you think?

Bob Jones University Student Suspended And Refused Graduation For Watching GLEE

Bob Jones University a strictly religious and private, for-profit, non-denominational “Protestant” university in Greenville, South Carolina is in the news this week for suspending college senior Christopher Peterman for watching the television program GLEE off campus.

“I was sending my graduation announcements that day. I had them all ready to be put in mail,” said Peterman.  “I had no idea that this was going to happen. They said that the nature of show (GLEE) was so morally wrong. They ended up giving me 50 demerits.”

Peterman said he had to pack up his dorm room and find housing with someone off campus because he was not allowed back on campus.

Bob Jones students are allowed 150 demerits before being suspended from school and Peterman became a blip on Bob Jones radar (and hit list) in Novemeber of 2011 when he stated a group called  “Do Right BJU”.

After that the University forced Peterman  to start attending counseling with the dean of men after Christmas break. He was required to read entire books of the Bible every day and write out devotions.

Bob Jones students are allowed 150 demerits before being suspended from school. He said the demerits started small for things like not shaving, returning to his dorm late, Facebook violations and forgetting to make his bed.

Peterman said the infractions got bigger until he topped out at 170 demerits last week. But t claims less than half are legitimate.

According to Peterman acquaintance Lara McClintok:

(We) were concerned that he would be targeted after the protest, and he was. I read the accounts of what was happening to him each week, and it was ugly. The Dean of Men was horribly insulting to him. It was pretty obvious the school was just trying to catch him tripping up so they could get rid of the protester once and for all. If this is how the school treats a loyal student with a legitimate concern (which he was and did have), the school needs to shut its doors. When GLEE is considered a bigger sin than having a board member who knowingly covered up a rape, it’s time to quit calling the school Christian.

And this is far from the first scandal at the so called “Christian University”

BJU did not enroll black students until 1971, eight years after the University of South Carolina and Clemson University had been integrated by court order. From 1971 to 1975, BJU admitted only married blacks, although the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) had already determined in 1970 that “private schools with racially discriminatory admissions policies” were not entitled to federal tax exemption.  BJU fought back saying that University met all other criteria for tax-exempt status and that the school’s racial discrimination was based on sincerely held religious beliefs, that “God intended segregation of the races and that the Scriptures forbid interracial marriage

In 1976, the Internal Revenue Service notified the university that its tax exemption had been revoked  and had to pay back taxes retroactively back to 1970 which totaled more than a million dollars.

When BJU did start to admit single black students it instituted an “no interracial dating rule.” which it dropped only 12 years ago in the year 2000 during a visit from then presidential candidate George W. Bush because of the media attention it garnered.

Bill O’Reilly Says Watching GLEE Will Make Kids Gay Transgender Smokers! (Or Something Like That)

The awesome Carlos Maza at Equlity Matters reports that during the April 19 telecast of The O’Reilly Factor, O’Reilly did a segment trashing this week’s episode of Glee for featuring a storyline about a transgender teenager struggling with her gender identity.

O’Reilly criticized GLEE for encouraging “dopey kids” to experiment with homosexuality.

If you make the behavior of these people … if children hear it, unsupervised children, okay who don’t have parents watching their — they might go out and experiment with this stuff…When I was a teenager and I saw James Dean smoking, it made me want to smoke…a lot of these dopey kids are confused about who they are. They’re confused.”

Then using his logic if you watch O’Reilly’s show, you’ll become a loud mouthed, loofah loving douchebag.

“Glee’s” Jesse St. James & Zach Quinto’s New Beau Jonathan Groff EXPOSED! (As In NAKED)

Rumours were flying this week about newly out actor Zachary Quinto dating  gay actor Johnathan Groff best known for his role of Jesse St. James on GLEE and Spring Awakening on Broadway.

The National Enquirer claims that the two actors have been secretly dating since last year, but that they kept it under wraps because Zachary was hiding his sexual orientation to keep his Star Trek role.

Just because it’s The National Enquirer doesn’t mean its not true as Crushable.com point out.

Besides GLEE and Spring Awakening, J.G. also starred in the indie film Twelve Thirty last year with an extended nude scene and since screencaps have just hit the web so since its a sloooooow Sunday I just thought you might be interested.

Both Bret and I agree he’s a bit too much of a “twink” for our taste but obviously Zach Q likes them sweet and full of cream
