Fort Lauderdale resident James Garcia said that he was taking his dog for a walk around 8 a.m. on Sunday morning when a man approached him. “He came up to me and asked me, ‘Are you gay?’ and then punched me.” And the stranger continued to punch him.
The results of his injures led him to get multiple stitches, seven on the forehead and three above the lip and fractured the cartilages on both sides of his nose.
After being treated at a local hospital Garcia was able to id his attacker after looking at pictures provided by Fort Lauderdale Police.
On Tuesday officers arrested thirty-six-year-old Maurice Antwan Charles of Fort Lauderdale, a man with a lengthy criminal history at a local hotel close to the victim’s home.
“This is a crime of hate. Whether he was targeting me, someone else he suspected as part of the LGBTQ community,” said Garcia “Yes, definitely a crime of hate.”
Florida has become a problematic state for members of the LGBT community and use extreme caution when alone or in the company of strangers.
“We must fight with all we have. We must put pressure on the House like has never been seen before. I’ll be damned if I will ever be forced to hire someone with orange hair, body/neck/face covered with tattoos, multiple piercings, or a man in a dress… or for that matter, a demonstrative effeminate male or purposeful butch-looking female. The Log Cabins are the same lobbyist organization that has all but taken over [Broward Republican Executive Committee]; and besides that, we have someone on the Board of BREC who is using her position to openly put pressure on some BREC members to stand for same-sex marriage. This is the same group who, based on nothing other than his recent stand for gay marriage, supports Chris Christie and who publicly worked against Cuccinelli for his stand for traditional marriage. Keep in mind, this is a thug organization with only their own ‘special interests’ in play.” – Danita Kilcullen, co-founder of Tea Party Fort Lauderdale who was arrested for ia felony in October 2011 for assault and battery upon a police officer.
Oh look. It’s Ayn Rand, played by Boris Karloff. “Master the creature walks!”
