At the NGLTF,  aka Task Force, aka National LGBTQ Task Force’s Creating Change conference last night  in Denver, CO  a large group of transgender advocates stormed the stage in protest of the recent killing of a Latina trans teen by the Denver police.  The trans-teen Jesse Hernandez was driving a car that was reported stolen with at least two friends when she was confronted by officers. She allegedly drove the car toward one of them. Officers responded by firing several shots into the driver’s side of the vehicle, killing Hernández.

Task Force deputy executive director Russell Roybal and Creating Change director Sue Hyde welcomed thousands of attendees at this year’s conference in Denver Thursday evening, and both showed emotion as they remarked upon the death of queer Latina Jessie Hernandez. Last week, Hernandez was fatally shot by police fire in Denver in a car authorities report was stolen. After Hyde and Roybal introduced the evening’s emcee, comedian Kate Clinton, a group of trans activists and allies, led by Bamby Salcedo, stormed the stage with dozens of handmade signs as the chant “Jessie Presente!” filled the ballroom”.

The transgender activists also were demanding increased support from the LGBT community in general to aid in their quest for equality. While there were several demands made from the stage by Salcedo, all coalesced around the statement “We are here demanding intentional, meaningful investment in our community.” Trans activists and supporters chanted “We are fighters.”  he protesters were calling LGBT organizations to task for a perceived lack of investment in the trans community.

Now I and everyone  I know have always promoted trans-equality.  But what really makes me wonder about the trans-movement is: What exactly was the point of disrupting a pro-equality conference where you are already fully supported to demand support?  This doesn’t make the general public any more aware of your problems  and you’d  be hard pressed to find anyone in the Creating Change crowd that doesn’t support you.

The trans=activist last night chanted that they are ” fighters”.  GO OUT AND FIGHT!  We have your backs.  We’ll even help. But go out and fight against those you need to.  WE ALREADY SUPPORT YOU.

Some personal advice.  Stop worrying about being on a Gay Inc. Board of Directors and get your asses out to City Hall and protest.

Don’t protest the very people who stand up for you already. Thats the easiest way to push people away.

And that’s already been happening.

We won’t even go into the fact that the  member of the trans-community they were protesting for possibly tried to run down and kill  a couple of police officers in s stolen car.

Gay Man Savagely Beaten In Hate Crime Over Labor Day Weekend In Denver, CO – Video

Denver Hate Crime

23-year-old Jared Olson was the victim of a brutal hate crime in Denver, CO over the Labor Day Weekend suffering injuries so severe that it left him with broken bones and facial injuries that will require intensive reconstructive surgery.

ABC7 reports:

The 23-year-old Olson told 7NEWS he and two friends were leaving Sam’s Hookah Lounge at 2370 W. Alameda Ave. about 2 a.m. Monday when he and a gay friend were attacked by a man in a group of men in the parking lot calling them gay slurs.

Olson said one man followed the trio when they got in their car, then pulled open the door to the back seat where Olsen and his friend, who’s also gay, were seated. The attacker repeatedly punched Olson in the face and also struck his friend. The male friend who was in the driver’s seat was not harmed.

Olson said the beating left him covered in blood, with broken bones in his face that will require reconstructive nose job surgery. He also had several teeth knocked out and chipped.

The Denver police are currently investigating this attack as a hate crime.

Olson medical bills will cost over $50,000, and he doesn’t have any insurance.

Friends have created a Facebook page to support Olson and raise funds.

Gun Shot Fired Into Obama Campaign Headquarters In Denver Colorado

A gunshot was fired at President Obama’s reelection  campaign office in Denver yesterday afternoon shattering the front plate-glass window and terrorizing those inside.  Fortunately no one was harmed.

The shot came at about 3pm and though they have no leads on a person at the  moment, Denver police say they’re looking into a specific vehicle description  that may lead them to the man or woman responsible.

This is what happens when a major political party (The RepubliCONs) become unhinged from reality.

Fourteen people have been killed and up to 50 wounded in a the Denver suburb of Aurora after a masked gunman opened fire at a late-night screening of the new Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.

A gunman dressed in a gas mask and military gear such in a side entrance and released a smoke or teargas bomb and opened fire during a shootout scene in the movie, leading to mass confusion.

One witness told CNN: “We heard anywhere from 10 to 20 shots and little explosions going on. Shortly after that we heard people screaming. Then they came on PA system and said everyone needed to get out. As soon as we got out, there were people running around and screaming” another described the gunman “slowly making his way up the stairs and firing, picking off random people”.

One police officer carried a girl believed to be about 9 years old with gunshot wounds to her back out of the theater, a witness said. “She wasn’t moving.”

Police arrested a man believed to be the shooter in a rear parking lot of the theater, Frank Fania, a police spokesman, told CNN. The suspect was not immediately identified, though Fania said he was believed to be in his early 20s. and told police that he had explosive materials in his apartment. The police went to his apartment building and evacuated the building immediately as a precautionary measure.

“He did not resist. He did not put up a fight,” Fania said. Police seized a rifle and a handgun from the suspect, and another gun was found in the theater, he said.

But according to one witness has come forward stating that shortly before that he witnessed a movie goer in the first row get up from his seat and move over to the Emergency Door where the shooter entered to continue his conversation.  No one is sure of the man opened the door for the shooter who entered from an alley alongside the theatre.

President Barack Obama issued a statement saying he and first lady Michelle Obama were “shocked and saddened” by the shooting and pledged the administration’s support for victims of the shooting.

“As we do when confronted by moments of darkness and challenge, we must now come together as one American family,”

Tim Tebow WON’T Be Doing An “It Gets Better” Video Anytime Soon For At Risk LGBT Youth

The Denver Broncos have responded to a Changel.org petition signed by more than 8,000 people asking them to create an ‘It Gets Better’ video and more specifically asking that “Christian” football star Tim Teabagger Tebow star in it by saying NO.

Broncos spokesman Patrick Smyth in a statement to The Huffington Post:

The Denver Broncos are committed to tolerance, acceptance and respect for all in the community,” said Smyth. “The National Football League is currently working with USA Network on its ‘Characters Unite’ campaign combating prejudice and intolerance, and our organization is in full support of that movement to help raise awareness for this very important cause.”

I guess LGBT teen suicide just isn’t as important to the Bronco’s

Surprisingly The Denver Bronco’s had nothing to say and no problem allowing Tebow last year to  produce and star in a Super Bowl ad for anti-gay, anti-abortion group Focus on the Family.

Why would we expect Tebow to care about gay teens or their persecution any more than members of NOM, AFA, or Westboro Church?  He is far from the role model that mainstream America makes him out to be except perhaps a role model of “extremist Christianity”

Denver Suburb Teens Yelled Gay Slurs Before Beating Up Man

This is a story of interest for two reason: 1) it shows how much work still needs to be done on education, and 2) this is from my hometown. The following if from The Denver Channel ABC 7:

DENVER — Two teenagers in Arvada have been charged with bias-motivated assault, accused of yelling gay slurs at a man before beating him up.

Joseph Murphy, 18, and Zachary Kocman, 19, are each charged with one felony count of bias-motivated crime and one misdemeanor count of third-degree assault.

The attack occurred on July 18, at about 2:30 p.m., according the Denver District Attorney’s Office.

The 25-year-old victim and a friend were walking in the area of 52nd Avenue and Federal Boulevard when the two suspects drove up to them yelling “sexual orientation slurs,” the district attorney’s office said.

The suspects then got out of their car and chased the victim for several blocks before physically assaulting him, said Lynn Kimbrough, spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office.

Murphy and Kocman have been released from custody on a $3,000 bond. They are scheduled to appear in Denver County Courtroom on Aug. 9.
