Back2Stonewall’s Sunday Tea Dance: Eartha Kitt “Where Is My Man” (1983)

Where is My Man was Eartha Kitt’s first recording released in the United States after her ostracism and self-imposed exile to Paris following her outspoken objection to the Vietnam War at a White House function in 1968, and it became her biggest-selling single in 30 years.

In the United Kingdom, Where Is My Man reached the Top 40 on the UK Singles Chart, where it peaked at #36.  This was her first UK Hit single in 28 years, the previous chart entry, “Under The Bridges of Paris” dating from 1955. The single was also a hit in dance clubs around the world peaking at #5 in Sweden and #22 in Netherlands. In the US, the song made the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart, peaking at #7 and remaining on the survey for 14 weeks.

‘Walking Dead’ Star Norman Reedus: I play Daryl Dixon like he’s a ‘prison gay’‏

After years of Back2stonewall.com’s pointing out the the lack of LGBT characters and story-lines on AMC’s the Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus who plays the shit-kicking redneck character of Daryl Dixon on the hit AMC zombie show did a lengthy Q&A this month in GQ magazine where he said that he portrays his character like he’s  a”prison gay.”

“I remember Frank Darabont, after the first season, we were at a party in L.A. He said, ‘I’ve got an idea for Daryl. He’s gay. Would you be interested in that?’ I was like, ‘Let me hear you out.’ He said, ‘Well, he’s prison gay. Like, you’ll catch him looking at a member of the same sex, but if you mention it to him, he’ll just stab you and be like, What the f***? He will never admit it.’ I was like, ‘That’ll blow minds — let’s do that.’ And he said, ‘I knew I hired you for a reason.'”

Now of course this comes after creator Robert Kirkman is addressed the rumors about Daryl’s sexuality in the letter column to “The Walking Dead” #130 last April.

“All I can say is that it’s been discussed. We have very specific ideas about Daryl’s sexuality (or the seeming lack thereof), and if there’s ever a quiet period in the show where he’s not consistently distracted by crossbowing… we’ll tackle it in the show.”

And while TWD Executive producer Scott Gimple has added a lesbian character (Tara) and has said that there will be a gay character by the end of the fifth season, (this after much blowback from this website) the chances of it actually being Daryl are slight at best especially considering the shows reluctance in the past to include gay story-lines and characters.  If we had to venture a guess though we’d wager that at the end of the season will find the introduction of the character arfirst encountered in Issue 67 of Image Comics’ The Walking Dead named Aaron from the Alexandria Safe-Zone which happens to be on the way to Washington, D.C.

Either way if the constant badgering from this website has anything to do with any gay characters being added we’ll take it.  But “prison gay”? C’mon Norman and Frank you can be less offensive and do better than that.  But we’ll forgive you if Daryl drops the soap and does indeed turn out to be the first zombie apocalypse ass-kicking gay redneck in television history!

LISTEN To “Gay Rights Warrior” Will Kohler of Back2Stonewall on the AlterNet News Radio Show!

Thats me!

I appeared on the AlterNet News radio show this weekend hosted by the awesome Joshua Holland and discuss  President Obama’s mention of Stonewall and Tony Perkins, Bryan Brownshirt , Buster Wilson aand the whole “hate gang” and their ridiculous anti-gay meme “Gays have all the rights as everyone else.”  (Buster???   Really?)

Also on the show is Eric Boehlert of Media Matters who has a good laugh at the GOP’s bizarre freakout over Obama’s inaugural speech, and to discuss his recent piece, ” Are Conservatives Rethinking Fox News’ Endless Outrage Model?” and AlterNet’s own Steve Rosenfeld who discusses this week’s court ruling that Obama’s recess appointments to the National labor Relations Board were unconstitutional, and the new Republican plan to gerrymander the Electoral College.

It’s a great show and  I recommend listening to the whole thing. (But if you only have time for me I come on right at the 30:00 minute mark.)
