As we reported last week, Miss Universe Canada issued a statement that Jenna Talackova who was originally born a male and underwent hormone therapy and reassignment surgery in 2010 was barred entrance from becoming the beauty pageants first transexual contestant.
GLAAD contacted the Miss Universe Organization last week after Jenna was disqualified and called on the Miss Universe Organization to review Jenna’s situation.
Tonight the Miss Universe Organization issued this statement:
“The Miss Universe Organization will allow Jenna Talackova to compete in the 2012 Miss Universe Canada pageant provided she meets the legal gender recognition requirements of Canada, and the standards established by other international competitions.”
Under Canada’s Equality Law in the 1982 constitution, her application cannot be denied since she’s legally a woman
