Zach Wahls, a 19-year-old University of Iowa student spoke about the strength of his family during a public forum on House Joint Resolution 6 in the Iowa House of Representatives. Wahls has two mothers, and came to oppose House Joint Resolution 6 which would end civil unions in Iowa.
I’ll let Zach do the talking:
Same-sex marriage was legalized in 2009 when the state’s supreme court unanimously ruled that a statutory ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. However, since then religious conservatives, many of them not based in Iowa have acquired backing from the state’s Republican leadership and successfully led the public to unseat three of the justices who they say legislated from the bench to create a “new” right to marriage equality. Statistics indicate that if Iowans were to vote on an amendment to marriage equality in the near future the amendment would almost certainly be approved. (Source: care2.com)
The fight to to keep marriage equality in Iowa continues.
Here’s our interview with Zach where he talks about what it was like growing up with two mothers, what led him to decide to go and speak before the House of Representatives, how his life has changed after this speech thrust him into the public eye, and what other young people can do to fight for equality and speak out against intolerance.
