Happy Tom of Finland Day! May 8, 1920: Iconic Gay Artist Tom of Finland (Touko Laaksonen) Born.

Tom of Finland Day is a commemorative day celebrated on May 8th. to revere the life and work of Touko Laaksonen, who is better known by his pseudonym Tom of Finland. Tom of Finland was a Finnish artist known for his masculine homoerotic drawings.

Born on May 8, 1920 – Tom of Finland (Touko Laaksonen) created some of the most indelible (and erotic) images of twentieth-century homo-erotica that have fueled the fantasies of generations of gay men born in the village of Kaarina, Finland.

Laaksonen who worked in advertising,  became a member of the Helsinki bohemian set, but avoided the small gay subculture because it was dominated by flamboyantly effeminate homosexuals.  In 1956 Laaksonen submitted his drawings to the American bodybuilding magazine Physique Pictorial. The editor was delighted with the work and featured Laaksonen’s drawing of a lumberjack on the cover of the magazine’s Spring 1957 issue This at a time when an action as simple as going to a gay bar could mean a night in jail for homosexuals, the openness and visibility of Tom’s depictions were groundbreaking.

Placed in parks, forests, locker rooms, bars, and prison cells, Tom’s men seem to wander an array of secluded public spaces but usually not far from small groups of interested onlookers. Their denim bound erections, bursting buttons, and turned up short-sleeves can barely conceal the irrepressible optimism of a gay liberation that was yet to come.

Although innocently posed in the early years, Tom’s drawings became more explicit later and they came to take on a more aggressive edge.  His work parallels the gay liberation movement (and the relaxation of censorship in the face of the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 1970s) in that it progresses to depict nudity, the fully erect penis, leather accoutrements, and eventually S&M scenes.

Touko Laaksonen passed away in 1991 but Tom of Finland’s art lives on.

In 1979, with his friend and business manager Durk Dehner, Laaksonen founded the Tom of Finland Company, which led in 1986 to the creation of the Tom of Finland Foundation, which is the official archive of Tom’s work and a collection of gay male erotic art and to support and encourage emerging erotic artists the Foundation also holds competitions which provides an exhibition of their work, publicity, and awards and has produced three Tom of Finland Retrospectives.

In 2014 the Finnish postal service released a set of stamps in honor of Tom of Finland.  They are considered to be the world’s first stamps depicting homoerotic art.

Tom of Finland Day is an opportunity for individuals and organizations to celebrate the artist’s legacy and the impact that his work has had such a huge impact on gay culture and a tribute to an artist who helped to shape it.

Leather PRIDE – June 20th, 1975: DRUMMER Magazine Hits The Newsstands

Today In Leather PRIDE - June 20th, 1975 : DRUMMER Magazine Hits The Newstands

June 20, 1975

Drummer Magazine the iconic granddaddy of all gay leather magazines hits the streets on June 20, 1975.

Founding editors John H. Embry and Jeanne Barney shared a vision in its original format geared  to leather stories but later the magazine became so popular that it became a photo essay magazine.

Drummer was the most successful of all American leather magazines and also sold overseas. The publication had a major impact of spreading gay leather as a lifestyle and masculinity as a gay ideal. and gave birth to such famous San Francisco social events as the California Motorcycle Club Carnival and the Mr. Drummer contest.

In 1978 Jack Fritscher became editor-in-chief of Drummer and introduced into “mainstream” gay media such artists as Tom of Finland,  Robert Mapplethorpe and David Hurles (Old Reliable), and showcased talents such as Robert Opel, Arthur Tress, Samuel Steward (Phil Andros), Larry Townsend, John Preston, Wakefield Poole, Rex, and A. Jay.

Through Fritscher’s work with Drummer the gay-identity word homomasculinity was coined as well as redefining S&M as “Sensuality and Mutuality” (1974).  Documenting on page the dawn of the “Daddy” and “Bear” movements, Fritscher was the first writer and editor to feature “older men” (Drummer 24, September 1978) and “Mountain Men Bears” (Drummer 119, July 1988) in the gay press.

One of Drummer Magazines most famous pieces of leather erotica was the story Mr. Benson written by John Preston and serialized in Drummer issues #29-38, 1979-80.

Mr. Benson is the compelling story of a young man’s quest for the perfect master. In a West Village leather bar, he finds wealthy, sophisticated, exacting Aristotle Benson, who leads him down the path of erotic enlightenment, teaching him to accept cruelty as love, anguish as affection, and ultimately, Mr. Benson as his master.  Its unabashed celebration of male sexuality made it a cult favorite among gay men, many of whom wore T-shirts declaring that they were “Looking for Mr. Benson.”

In 1992 Drummer magazine was taken over by a Dutch company and ceased publication in September 1999.

The first 20 issues of Drummer magazine have been preserved for history and uploaded on Scribd.

Also be  sure to visit www.DrummerArchives.com maintained by our good friend and gay activist Jack Fritscher.

*Mr. Benson is available in book form from Amazon.com on Kindle and also in paperback.

Directed by Dome Karukoski, the film follows Touko Laaksonen, a decorated officer, as he returns home to Finland after fighting for his country in World War II. But life during peacetime proves just as distressing as his time on the battlefields in Europe. Laaksonen finds Helsinki rampant with persecution of homosexuals and sees many men around him pressured to marry women and have children. Touko finds refuge in his art, specializing in homoerotic drawings of muscular men, free of inhibitions. His work made famous by his signature ‘Tom of Finland’ became the emblem of a generation of men and fanned the flames of a gay revolution.

WATCH: Tom of Finland’s Iconic Gay Drawings Come To Life In Animated DJ Hell Video: I Want You – NSWF

German DJ-producer DJ Hell’’s “I Want You” video is a tantalizingly fantastic Tom of Finland wet dream that brings the iconic artist Touko Laaksonen’s drawings to life.

“My new song ‘I Want U’ centers on love between men. House music emerged from that very early underground club scene in Chicago and New York City, with legendary clubs like The Warehouse and the Paradise Garage. The soundtrack for those nights was presented by DJs like Ron Hardy and Larry Levan, bringing DJ/club culture and gay culture together. With my new album I want to pay tribute to that movement and that time by highlighting Tom’s work.”

DJ Hell collaborated with the Tom of Finland foundation.

NSWF but extremely awesome.

Liberty Counsel’s Matt Barber’s Little “Mind Is Boggled” That Harvey Milk Got A Stamp

Fat Matt Barber Liberty Counsel

“This is a man who was known for a perverse sexual appetite for teenage, runaway, drug-addicted boys and the fact that this Obama administration and the postal service would choose to ignore that and go with the propaganda and the hype that this guy was some kind of hero and a pro-LGBT martyr – it just boggles the mind. That [Harvey Milk] would get his own stamp and that this other homosexual activist would get a stamp honoring a lifestyle that has led to the AIDS epidemic, that has led to the spread of syphilis and STDs and a decline in our culture’s morality, just speaks to how far we have fallen as a nation.” – Failed boxer, failed insurance agent and professional liar Matt Barber, speaking to OneNewsNow.
