Actress Ellen Barkin SLAMS Mormon NBC Affiliate for Refusing To Air Gay Comedy ‘The New Normal’

WKSL-TV a Salt Lake City, Utah Mormon owned NBC affiliate has announced that it has decided that it will not broadcast “New Normal” this fall, a serio-comedy about two gay mens quest to have a baby vis a surrogate mother. “After viewing the pilot episode of The New Normal, we have made the decision to keep it off our fall schedule,” Jeff Simpson told Desert News. “For our brand, this program simply feels inappropriate on several dimensions, especially during family viewing time.

Incensed over the decision actress Ellen Barkin who has a role in the new television show,  took to Twitter to slam the Mormon owned station with charges of homophobia and bigotry.

Barkin tweeted, “Anyone in Utah interested in @NBCTheNewNormal please clog up @ksl5tv feed 4 their blatantly homophobic decision 2 not air the show #KSLBigots.” She wrote in another post, Shame on u @kslcom not airing @NBCTheNewNormal So L&O SVU (rape & child murder) is ok? But loving gay couple having a baby is inappropriate?”

Earlier this month the One Million Shrews  Moms protested the show, claiming that the “program is damaging to our culture,” and blasting NBC for “using public airwaves to continue to subject families to the decay of morals and values, and the sanctity of marriage in attempting to redefine marriage.”

Mormon Owned NBC Affiliate Station Refuses To Air TV Show About Gay Couple

A Mormon owned television station, KSL, Utah Affiliate of NBC has announced they refuse to air the show ‘The New Normal.’ The show due next month, centers around a gay couple and their surrgate’s journey to have a child and expand their family. Jeff Simpson, CEO of ,Bonneville, parent company to the KSL station, felt the show would be too much for the audience to handle.

“The dialogue might be excessively rude and crude. The scenes may be too explicit or the characterizations might seem offensive. After viewing the pilot episode of The New Normal, we have made the decision to keep it off our fall schedule. For our brand, this program simply feels inappropriate on several dimensions, especially during family viewing time…. NBC is a valued partner — and as the Summer Olympic Games prove, they are committed to great news, sports and entertainment programming. KSL is confident that with the proliferation of digital media, those who wish to view the program can easily do so.”

Last month of course the  12 angry hateful bitter women  One Million Moms called for the boycott of the show shortly after the premise of the show was announced saying the show is “not normal’ :

“NBC is using public airwaves to continue to subject families to the decay of morals and values, and the sanctity of marriage in attempting to redefine marriage. These things are harmful to our society, and this program is damaging to our culture.”

Creator of the show, Ryan Murphy commented about the boycott saying, “It’s 2012. I don’t think this [show] is anything so outrageous,”

Co-star of the show Ellen Barkin took to twitter to express her frustration with the tv station’s position of not airing the show:

“Shame on u @kslcom not airing@NBCTheNewNormal So L&O SVU (rape & child murder) is ok? But loving gay couple having a baby is inappropriate?”

This isn’t the first time the tv station has refused to air a show because they thought it was too controversial. Last year they refused to air The Playboy Club because they felt the plot was inconsistent.

GLAAD president Herndon Graddick released a statement reaching out to KSL so that an understanding could be met about the premise of the show and LGBT families:

“We invite Jeff Simpson to sit down with GLAAD and local LGBT families. We know that if he would, he would see that not only are our families normal, but by citing ‘crude and rude’ content and refusing to affirm LGBT families, KSL and Mr. Simpson are sending a dangerous message to Utah. They should make that right.”

I hope the show does well despite the station’s close-minded thinking.

New Sitcom ‘The New Normal’ Is Not Only About Gay A Couple Says Frontrunner

For your possible tv viewing pleasure this fall NBC is offering up a much needed diverse mix in comedy that showcase LGBT characters. This Fall NBC is debuting freshman comedy The New Normal featuring a gay couple looking to expand their family. The show’s frontrunner, Ali Alder, wants to inform viewers this show isn’t just about a gay couple.

“We’re not intending to be political –We intend to be an emotional and character-driven show, and these are very personal stories that are very relatable regardless of gender or sexual orientation. It’s about your humor, I think, and your ability to be self-aware.”

When discussing the reaction the show has been getting from angry mother groups and the religious right, Adler feels a central character played by the incomparable Ellen Barkin, who’s the mother of the gay couple’s surrogate, will reflect America’s more conservative views:

“What’s exciting about this — and there are a lot of polarized viewpoints in this show — is that we hope to present a very inclusive platform. To me, we do a lot of point-counterpoint, and Ellen’s character in particular represents a lot of people’s, in many ways, valid opinions, aside from the racism. Her conservative beliefs are something that a lot of people feel, so we feel proud to be able to represent that. Forget about the racism — that’s just her own character quirk. But we do like to be able to show everyone’s opinion. This is not a show about gay people. It’s just a show about people, and hopefully everyone can look in and admire something or see something familiar to them. Regardless of what their own experience is, it’s familiar because it’s really just a family that cares about each other.

I personally don’t see how racism is a quirk or how someone’s hateful views on same sex couples are seen as valid but it may be a poor choice of words. MAY BE. It is possible that is the point since Ellen’s character has a weekly verbal sparring with Real Housewives of Atlanta NeNe Leakes to showcase that.

Co-Creator Ryan Murphy, who’s also the frontrunner for Fox musical comedy/drama Glee and FX American History Story, echoed Adler’s sentiments that this show is more than about a gay couple when he was questioned about the reaction the new show got from 12 angry bitter uptight hateful mothers One Million Moms;

“We certainly pitched the gay couple,” Murphy said. “But we also talked about what’s it like to be a single mother. What’s it like to be a single woman in your ’50s dating again. We fell in love with the characters … Everybody has people in their family who are represented in all of these characters.”

Overall. the reviews are mixed with some calling the new comedy try-hard to others professing the new show as must see TV. Judge for yourself this Fall starting September 11 at 9:30 EST.
