Lesbian tennis legend Billie Jean King has spoken out against Florida governor Ron DeSantis over the state’s ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law.

King who was in Florida for the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup on Friday (14 April), spoke out against the state’s ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law – which bars public schools from teaching about LGBT+ topics and gender identity from kindergarten through third grade .

“If you heard my personal journey, which I thought I was straight, I realized later in life I wasn’t. I had to figure out who am I, who is my authentic self. Going through that journey just for me personally, the important thing is to be welcoming to everyone. I have no control over what the governor is doing. He probably has gay kids in his family. He’ll say he doesn’t probably, but I bet he does. Most people have gay relatives, even if they don’t know it. I’m about inclusion. I think you should have different people on the (school) board.  Shouldn’t just be the people like you, that look like you, think like you. I think it’s important to have people who think differently. That’s how you really win.

The Biden administration’s press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called DeSantis’ plan to extend the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law “completely, utterly wrong”.  “Make no mistake, this is part of a disturbing and dangerous trend we’re seeing across the country, of legislation that [is] anti-LGBTQI+, anti-trans, in a way we have not seen in some time. We’re talking about students, we’re talking about educators, we’re talking about individuals.” 

Sidenotes:

1. Many new sites will lazily call King “queer”. Billie Jean King openly identifies as a Lesbian and should be noted as such. Not “queer’. PLEASE be respectful of how people identify.

2. BJK should really push for her tournament to be moved out of Florida permanently.

Martina Navratilova proposed to her girlfriend Julia Lemigova on the big screen of Arthur Ashe Stadium between the U.S. Open men’s semifinals in the Tennis Channel suite Saturday, drawing a loud cheer from the crowd.

“I was very nervous,” Navratilova said later. “It came off. She said yes. It was kind of an out-of-body experience. You’ve seen people propose at sporting events before, in movies, in real life. Here it was happening to me. It was like I was watching myself do it.”

Navratilova said somebody suggested she propose during a changeover in the first match between Kei Nishikori and Novak Djokovic, but she didn’t want to disturb the players in any way. The only problem was that Navratilova was later scheduled to play a “Champions” doubles match with Jana Novotna against Tracy Austin and Gigi Fernandez. She tried unsuccessfully to get the start postponed without telling anybody why, so she was fretting that the Nishikori-Djokovic match would go five sets. Fortunately, it ended in four.

Navratilova said she and Lemigova would prefer to get married in Florida, where they live. A federal judge ruled last month that the state’s ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional, but Florida officials are appealing and same-sex marriage is still on hold.

Juan Martin del Porto is beautiful in every sense of the word. The 6’6” tall and lanky 20-year-old stud from Tandil, in the southwest of Buenos Aires Province from Argentina has the world at his feet.

Juan Martin is a sports major talent, but still has the slightly cute and doofy, untarnished look of an innocent. You know, kind of like a handsome Michael Phelps before all that strippers-and-pot unpleasantness!

Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, watch your backs.  On the second thought DON’T.  I’d love to see pictures.

Martina Navratilova Backhands Fellow Tennis Champion Margaret Court Over Anti-Gay Comments

Martina Navratilova has stepped to the line and has served an ace against against 62 year old Australian women’s tennis champion Margaret Court an athlete-turned-reverend at Perth’s Victory Life Church  who last week said in regards to families with opposite-sex parents that they are “dysfunctional and despite the fact the role models may be distorted and even severely flawed, there is no reason to put forward alternative, unhealthy, unnatural unions as some form of substitute.”

Said Martina in reply:

“Seems to me a lot of people have evolved as has the Bible, unfortunately Margaret Court has not. Her myopic view is truly frightening as well as damaging to the thousands of children already living in same gender families… I have tried to talk to Margaret, but to say she’s completely close-minded on the issue is an understatement

Fernando Verdasco Carmona (born 15 November 1983 in Madrid) is a professional tennis player from Spain. He is currently the second-highest ranked Spanish tennis player, ranked number 11 in the world (as of February 8th, 2010). Verdasco started playing tennis at four years of age and had a full-time coach when he was eight. As of 2009, Verdasco has been working in Las Vegas with Andre Agassi and his team including Darren Cahill (Agassi’s former coach) and Gil Reyes (Agassi’s fitness coach). Verdasco has aided Spain in winning two Davis Cup titles, winning the deciding match in both 2008 and 2009.
