Famed Star Trek and Sci-Fi Writer David Gerrold Slams Orson Scott Card Over “Tolerance” Beg

David Gerrold

“Ender’s Game is set more than a century in the future and has nothing to do with political issues that did not exist when the book was written in 1984. With the recent Supreme Court ruling, the gay marriage issue becomes moot. The Full Faith and Credit clause of the Constitution will, sooner or later, give legal force in every state to any marriage contract recognized by any other state. Now it will be interesting to see whether the victorious proponents of gay marriage will show tolerance toward those who disagreed with them when the issue was still in dispute.” –– Orson Scott Card.

“Puh-leeze.

After twenty years of despicably virulent homophobia … no. This is just another detestable characterization of LGBT people — that we are intolerant.

Intolerant? Of people who want to lock us up, put us in concentration camps, deny us our civil rights? Intolerant? Are you fucking kidding me?

You want me to be tolerant, Scott? First be one of those people who understands. Or to put it bluntly — get your fucking foot off my neck, then we’ll talk tolerance.

See, Scott — I don’t dislike you. I honestly don’t. I think you’re a very interesting author and you’ve turned out some works I admire. But you’ve made PR Mistake Number One. You’ve sided with hate-mongers. You’ve targeted a minority and you’ve characterized yourself as the righteous warrior. That gives you a short-term gain and a long-term loss. Look up Father Coughlin and Anita Bryant and Kirk Cameron.

Now you’ve made PR Mistake Number Two — instead of honestly and sincerely apologizing for the hurt you have caused others, you have doubled down. You have played the martyr card, arguing that you are the victim.

What this demonstrates is that you have no idea of what the issue really is. It’s about the 1138 rights, privileges, benefits, and obligations attendant to the civil contract of marriage. It’s about social security benefits and inheritance and child custody and joint taxation and deathbed decisions and hospital visitation and adoption and community property and all the other things that you and your wife take for granted. It’s about equality in the eyes of the law.

This is the goal that women set out to achieve when they first demanded the right to vote. This is the goal that Dr. Martin Luther King set out to achieve for African-Americans and other minorities when he started the Montgomery bus boycott. This is the goal that Harvey Milk set out to achieve when he opposed CA’s Prop 6 and when he ran for the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

Our nation was founded on the idea that “we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men (people) are created equal, endowed with certain inalienable rights — and that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

Your public statements, Orson Scott Card, put you on the wrong side of that declaration. Until you recognize that your public utterances have been at the service of bigotry and prejudice, there can be no redemption for you in the eyes of the LGBT community. Or anyone else, for that matter.”

The above was written and posted by openly gay and famed science fiction writer David Gerrold on his Facebook page.

Gerrold is best known for his scripts for the popular original Star Trek series notably the episode “The Trouble With Tribbles“, for creating the Sleestak race on the TV series Land of the Lost, and for his novelette The Martian Child,.

Chris Pine Talks About Taking On Gay Roles

Some of you may know my deep, unwavering love of Chris Pine. The man is just..mmmm. It’s hard for me to disguise my affection for him whenever his name comes up because besides those piercing blue eyes his personality seems to be so endearing and cautiously inquisitive about the world. And in his latest interview in OUT Magazine, you’ll understand why this man fascinates me so much. Here’s more:

Pine reveals he sought out a role in HBO’s adaptation of Larry Kramer’s “The Normal Heart,” which is set to star Julia Roberts, Mark Ruffalo and Matt Bomer, but a deal didn’t work out because of scheduling. “I would have done that in a fucking heartbeat,” he says. “Right now I just want to play good roles, and if the role happens to be a gay man, that’s not of any import other than is it a good story? Does it say something that’s interesting?”

Of his “Star Trek” co-star Zachary Quinto, who came out in a 2011 New York magazine profile, Pine noted, “It was something that I knew about Zach from the moment I met him … It was something that we kind of tiptoed around and I just took it as a given, because that’s what he wanted.”

When Quinto did come out, Pine said he was “so happy for him, oh man. I thought it was rad. It was really, really cool. He did it on his own time, on his own schedule.”

See? What a perfect answer that you want to hear from our straight allies; completely not threatened all the while being supportive and accepting of the various stages we go through.  He’s just..perfect. While I’m here, these are some of my favorite pics from his GQ cover shoot:

WOOF; Hipster Edition: Zachary Quinto Wants You To Vote!

Okay so yeah I have a bit of a thing for hipsters. Who am I kidding I CANNOT GET ENOUGH OF THEM OKAY?! I don’t know where it comes from exactly. Maybe it’s the ill-fitting glasses or the quirky and homely attire that they wear to convey style but I cannot look away.  American Horror Story, Star Trek and Heroes star Zachary Quinto is the epitome of this. And it makes him incredibly sexy. Even those beautiful bushy eyebrows have so much personality that there’s probably websites built just to admire them (I won’t say who makes websites like them but I sure do spend a lot of time there.)

He’s fit and healthy. So what if he’s not at the gym 5 days a week? Those honey brown eyes are all you need to look at. They’re intense, alluring, with just a dash or intrigue and mystery to occupy (see what I did there) your daydreaming all day long.

And best of all, he’s proactive about the community. Quinto has been on the campaign trail for weeks now helping to see that President Obama is re-elected for a second term and always in hipster fashion. He uses social media like twitter to make sure we get out and vote with tweets like these:

“if you are a: woman. student. worker. fighter. artist. teacher. immigrant. parent. gay. or gay parent. the choice is clear.@BarackObama

“young people of this country. OUR future is in your hands! GET. OUT. THE. VOTE…”

See, Quinto uses his status to promote awareness and that is why I will always swoon for this hipster.

That and he was Perfect hair…

Smart & Incredibly Sexy Zachary Quinto Interview

The incredibly endearing socially conscious Zachary Quinto gave an interview for OUT magazine that discusses his life, his career, politics, and what he envisions for the future. The Heroes and Star Trek actor first expresses why he came out last year in such a nonchalant manner:

“I needed it to happen. Otherwise, I couldn’t move forward authentically. Ultimately, I think the only thing that really drives me in life, continually, is a pursuit of authenticity of experience — of myself.”

“One of the defining conversations that I had with myself was that absolutely no good can come from me staying quiet about [my sexuality],” he says. “Literally, no good can come from it. But if I take the step to make the acknowledgment and be honest, so much good could potentially come from it.”

Over the past few months, Quinto has been a strong suporter of President Obama and even using twitter to campaign for the upcoming elections in November. Quinto to say the least is dismayed by the public discrimation towards the president as well as the religious right’s view on LGBT rights:

“It boggles my mind that there are so many extreme, Christian organizations that are adopting a stance against homosexuality with such vitriol and hatred and targeted aggression that goes against the tenets of the Christian faith, The hatred that people are leading with in this discussion is really, for me, the biggest symptom of how sick we are. It’s the thing that makes me look at our culture and think, We are so far afield of any sort of connectivity or truth in relationship to one another. I don’t want this to be too soapboxy,”

Quinto also discusses his past in love, saying how it may have been because of his father’s death may have influenced how he dated in the past. And even though Quinto is very private about his personal life, he admitted his relationship with actor Jonathan Groff. Maybe the strong relationship is what has him talking about expanding his family in the future? Maybe:

“I found myself in a pattern of being attracted to people who were somehow unavailable, and what I realized was that I was protecting myself because I equated the idea of connection and love with trauma and death, I had to do a lot of work on the couch to really get to a place where I was able to show up to a relationship with someone who was actually capable of being in one — and that took a lot of trial and error. And I’m still working on all that stuff — that will never stop. But I definitely want kids… I want to share.”

I love this interview so much! Highly recommend fellow Star Trek fans check out the rest of his interview and what he says about his friendship with Leonard Nimoy!!!

Is J.J. Abrams Open To A Gay Character In Star Trek 2?

It’s being reported that  J.J. Abrams who has taken over the Captains helm of directing the Star Trek re-boot franchise says that he is open to the idea of a gay character in Star Trek 2.

Abrams claims that hes surprised that in all the Star Trek episodes and spin-offs there there has never been an identifiable gay character.

“You know what’s funny? As someone who was never a huge Star Trek fan and I didn’t watch the shows,” he said. “And my experiences with the movie was the first series and then watching and re-watching some of the movies that I’ve seen. I’m frankly shocked that in the history of Star Trek there have never been gay characters in all the series. In Deep Space Nine and all the Enterprises that that’s never come up.”

But not so fast there laddies there seems to be some trouble in the transporter because according to Abrams does say it’s a “trickier” to have a gay character in a movie than in a television series, due to the time and story limitations. “Where in a movie when you got those two hours, it usually is a broader stroke thing, and the question is how do you do it in a film that doesn’t feel like you’re shoehorning in something that has meaning to you in a piece of entertainment that doesn’t otherwise have room for it,” he said

What?  If thats the case and it really is easier in a television series it makes you wonder why the in Abrahm’s Lost? No gay characters. Alias? No gay characters. Fringe? No gay characters.

If J.J. Abrams would understand that being LGBT should not be treated as part of a “storyline” but just as an aside of who the character is.  No drwan out  commentary is needed. It can just be acknowledgement that gay people exist.

Now J.J., is that so hard?
