During his parching SOTU response speech, GOP Sen. Marco Rubio made a big deal about his “blue-collar neighbors” and “still living in the same working class neighborhood (he) I grew up in.”
Well turns out that Rubio’s neighborhood is only blue-collar if you compare it to Mitt Romneys.
Rubio who lives in an upscale Knots Landing cul-de-sac has recently put his humble shack on the market for $650,000.00 and the only blue-collar workers are the gardeners and housekeepers in his McMansions hood.
President Obama delivered his State of the Union speech last night and while mentioning LGBT Americans twice he did not tackle the subject of employment non-discrimination directly once again only alluding to it off handedly and talking about benefits for gay and lesbian solders which make up about .0005 % of the population.
As long as I’m Commander-in-Chief, we will do whatever we must to protect those who serve their country abroad, and we will maintain the best military in the world. We will invest in new capabilities, even as we reduce waste and wartime spending. We will ensure equal treatment for all service members, and equal benefits for their families – gay and straight. We will draw upon the courage and skills of our sisters and daughters, because women have proven under fire that they are ready for combat. We will keep faith with our veterans – investing in world-class care, including mental health care, for our wounded warriors; supporting our military families; and giving our veterans the benefits, education, and job opportunities they have earned.
It is our unfinished task to restore the basic bargain that built this country – the idea that if you work hard and meet your responsibilities, you can get ahead, no matter where you come from, what you look like, or who you love
“Time and time again, President Obama continues to pay lip service to employment equity, but refuses to take the simple step of signing an Executive Order that would end LGBT discrimination by federal contractors — and that would prevent taxpayer dollars, including taxpayer dollars from LGBT Americans, from going to discriminatory companies. He had his pen out today to sign other Executive Orders — it’s incumbent on the LGBT community to ask why he decided to put that pen away before protecting 25% of the American workforce from workplace discrimination.”
Its time for Obama to put up or shut up because his words and crumbs aren’t fooling anyone except the Human Rights Campaign any longer. Obama needs to use his political capital to push ENDA as one on HIS initiatives (rather than if you bring it to me I will sign it) or sign the Executive Order, which is at least a start in the right direction.
During President Obama’s State of the Union address last night, his last before the 2012 elections in November. President Obama drew sharp contrasts against Republicans on such high-profile issues as taxes, job creation, and the housing market and warned Congress that he “intends to fight obstruction with action.”
But only once did Obama mention the gay community and that was near the end of his speech and was lumped into a section about Americas Armed Forces.
“Those of us who’ve been sent here to serve can learn from the service of our troops. When you put on that uniform, it doesn’t matter if you’re black or white; Asian or Latino; conservative or liberal; rich or poor; gay or straight. When you’re marching into battle, you look out for the person next to you, or the mission fails. When you’re in the thick of the fight, you rise or fall as one unit, serving one Nation, leaving no one behind.”
There was no mention of LGBT Equality, DOMA, same sex marriage, or ENDA and the discrimination that LGBT folk face mainly because of the Republican party.
Now as many gay Obama supporters say “This president is the most LGBT-friendly president in active office EVER!” and thats true. Is he the tenacious advocate he promised to be “no”. Do we have any other choice but to vote for him “no” anything else and even not voting at all is insane because we MUST keep the GOP out of office. But just because Obama has done some little things SKIRTING AROUND DOMA instead of pushing to dismantle it does not give him a pass on the larger issues.
Many in our community say to be grateful and not complain that the President has larger fish to fry at the moment than LGBT equality. But to think that in the year 2012 in the United States of America the “greatest country in the world” that a section of its population is demonized, discriminated against and purposely treated differently by their own country as second class citizens is a pretty GODAMM BIG FISH.
I will continue to complain that it’s not enough because IT ISN’T ENOUGH! And if you choose to accept less than those around you then sit by and take the scraps that are doled out to you and are wiling to wait for something that may never come than that’s all that you deserve.
Top 1 percent Fortune Teller John (BONER) Boehner once again made a fool of himself today by criticizing and attacking President Obama’s 2012 State Of The Union Address while the White House is still writing it! –Source
