Raven-Symoné tells Oprah Winfrey: I’m not gay, and I’m not African-American. I’m an American – Video

Raven

Actress Raven-Symone sat dwon for an interveiw with told Oprah Winfrey on OWN on Sunday night, and told the BIG O why she doesn’t like to be labeled as gay or African-American.

“I don’t want to be labeled gay,” Raven-Symone said. “I want to be labeled a human who loves humans.”

Simone confirmed that she’s in “an amazing, happy relationship” with her partner, who is a woman, but added that she doesn’t “need a categorizing statement for it.”

“I’m tired of being labeled,” Raven-Symone told Winfrey. “I’m an American; I’m not an African-American. I’m an American.”

Symone defended her stance, explaining that she doesn’t “know where my roots go to; I don’t know how far back they go. I don’t know what country in Africa I’m from. But I do know that my roots are in Louisiana. I’m an American, and that’s a colorless person, because we’re all people. I have lots of things running through my veins.”

Winfrey, taken aback told  Symone that she was in for “a lot of flak for saying you’re not African-American,”

Symone countered:  “I don’t label myself. What I really mean by that is I’m an American. I have darker skin. I have a nice, interesting grade of hair. I connect with Caucasian. I connect with Asian. I connect with black. … I connect with each culture. … Aren’t we all (a melting pot)? Isn’t that what America’s supposed to be?”

There have been numerous speculations and rumors on whether a celebrity is gay and that is certainly true about That’s So Raven and The Cosby Show star Raven Symone. Many just presumed the actress was dating America’s Next Top Model contestant AzMarie Livingston as they were living together for some time. But nothing had been explicitly confirmed by Symone on her sexuality until she tweeted that she can finally get married and expressing gratitude:

This statement is after the country celebrated Minnesota and Rhode Island officially allowing same sex marriage as of yesterday. Symone went on to retweet followers expressing their support as well as addressing the rumors on the actress’s sexuality:

But is most important is that Symone did it in her own way and on her own time. Instead of addressing the rumors she did what anyone should do which is continue to live her life the way she chose to. And she decided to announce her sexuality in the same way. If only every one would take this and other instances of people, celebrity or not, being able to express their sexuality and who they are on their own time and no one else’s schedule. Too often people believe that you owe them your story but that isn’t true at all. This is your journey so anyone else that has the mindset of telling you when you should express that needs to have a seat and realize that it is your life. Coming out is about taking ownership reclaiming your identity, not pacifying what is expected of you from other people.

Congrats Raven on your official coming out day

Actress Raven-Symoné Responds To Recent Lesbian Rumors Via Twitter

All grown up 25 year old ex-Disney That’s So Raven star Raven-Symoné who’s currently  starring in Boradway’s Sister Act as Deloris Van Cartier (A role she is faaar too young for.  But thats another story.)  responded today via Twitter to the news via The National Enquirer that she is a lesbian who’s currently dating model AzMarie Livingston.

Tweeted Symone:

I’m living my PERSONAL life the way I’m happiest,” she tweeted “I’m not one, in my 25 year career to disclose who I’m dating. and I shall not start now. My sexual orientation is mine, and the person I’m datings to know.”

“I’m not one for a public display of my life. However that is my right as a HUMAN Being, whether straight or gay. To tell or not to tell. As long as I’m not harming anyone. I am a light being made from love. And my career is the only thing I would like to put on display, not my personal life. Kisses!”

I  wish Hollywood didn’t put such stigma on this.  I sincerely hope that she relaxes and accepts herself a bit more.

But good for her for at least not denying it.

Unlike some stars *cough* Queen Latifah *cough*
