Retired Maine GOP Senator Olympia Snowe NOW Supports Gay Marriage Of Course

Olympia Snowe supports gay marriage

Former Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME) now says that she supports gay marriage  and  she also now opposes DOMA, which she voted for in 1996:

“I think obviously this has evolved over time on the whole issue for the whole country and the nations,” Snowe, a moderate Republican, told CNN. “We’ve seen a sea change in society’s whole attitude on this particular issue and it’s only natural for government to be responsive to those changes.”

“The time has come,” she continued. “I think what we’re seeing is, I think, changing societal conventions, that ultimately you see the transformation of society’s gradual thinking and evolving on issues. I think we’re seeing those sea changes on this particular question.”

Very brave words Olympia now that you are retired and have absolutely no power to make things happen.

But to be fair Olympia Snowe once a very strong-willed independent Republican who reached across the aisle more than a few times in her career but she lost her steam and her freewill the last 4 years of her term becoming nothing more than another GOP lemming voting along the new Reich Rights extremist hard line something she despised and which is why she retired and let office.

While Lady Gaga was rallying thousands or Mainers today to support the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine seems to be hinting at following the the Republican and Obama Administration Party line about waiting until a military review of the issue should be completed before the law is repealed.

“We should all have the opportunity to review that report which is to be completed on December 1, as we reevaluate this policy and the implementation of any new changes,” Snowe said in a written statement this afternoon

Interestingly enough Snowe  has a 78% positive rating by the HRC, indicating a pro-gay-rights stance in the past and  has voted YES on prohibiting job discrimination by sexual orientation and voted NO on a constitutional ban of same-sex marriage. (Jun 2006), 

Snowe used to be one of the most decent Republican Senators there were.  But since Obama has taken office she has no backbone or guts any longer and falls into the Republican goosestep at the last minute. (With the exception of her Health Care vote on which she almost caved due to Republic pressure.)

With over 75 percent oif the country against DADT if the VOTE FAILS tomorrow, we have iron clad proof that Senators DO NOT listen to their constituents and our Government is truly broken.

Tea Party Takes Over Maine GOP. Now We Get To See What Olympia Snowe Is REALLY Made Of

Well those wild, bigoted and craaaaaaaazy Tea Bagger’s have successfully replaced Maine’s GOP party platform with their own.

An overwhelming majority of delegates to the Maine Republican convention tonight voted to scrap the the proposed party platform and replace it with a document created by a group of Tea Party activists. The official platform for the Republican Party of Maine is now a mix of right-wing fringe policies, libertarian buzzwords and outright conspiracy theories. The document calls for the elimination of the Department of Education and the Federal Reserve, demands an investigation of “collusion between government and industry in the global warming myth,” suggests the adoption of “Austrian Economics,” declares that “‘Freedom of Religion’ does not mean ‘freedom from religion'” (which I guess makes atheism illegal), insists that “healthcare is not a right,” calls for the abrogation of the “UN Treaty on Rights of the Child” and the “Law Of The Sea Treaty” and declares that we must resist “efforts to create a one world government.” It also contains favorable mentions of both the Tea Party and Ron Paul. You can read the whole thing here. Dan Billings, who has served as attorney for the Maine GOP, called the new platform “wack job pablum” and “nutcase stuff.”

Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe must be seriously wondering how long they can remain in the GOP.
