New Orleans To Exhume And Attempt To Identify Unknown LGBT Victims of "Upstairs Lounge" Inferno Through DNA

New Orleans To Exhume And Attempt To Identify Unknown LGBT Victims of “Upstairs Lounge” Inferno Through DNA

In New Orleans on a warm Sunday afternoon in June 24, 1973 an  afternoon arson attack on a gay bar called the Upstairs Lounge resulted in the deaths of 32 people. The UpStairs Lounge fire is the deadliest fire in New Orleans history and now the second largest mass murder of LGBT people ever in the United States after the Florida Pulse Massacre.

News coverage at that time, both print and television, made every effort to omit the fact that the fire had anything to do with homosexuals in the community, even though a gay bar and members of a gay church congregation had been involved.  The stories that appeared included quotes from local citizens that can only be described as ignorant, such as a cab driver who said “I hoped the fire burned their dresses off,” and one woman who opined that “the Lord … cooked them.”  Local talk radio hosts were making jokes such as, “What do they bury the ashes of queers in?”  The answer:  “Fruit jars.”

Of the 32 victims  four of the bodies were buried by authorities in an unmarked grave in the local “potter’s field”. Sadly, a record of exactly where those bodies were buried was lost during the Hurricane Katrina tragedy of 2005. Now, officials in the city have announced that they plan to renew efforts to find the victims in the unmarked grave.

Last Thursday, NOLA city council passed a motion promising to renew efforts to find the lost bodies. Doing so opens up the possibility of carrying out DNA testing to identify those not previously named. It also means they can receive a proper burial after all these decades..

“The City’s callous and deeply inadequate response … rooted in pervasive anti-gay sentiment” made suffering worse for victims´ families and friends” states the motion written by Councilmember Jean-Paul “JP” Morrell.

The motion says the city has a moral obligation to do all it can to aid “the recovery and dignified interment of the victims of the UpStairs Lounge massacre.”

LOUISIANNA’s “Don’t Say Gay” Bill KILLED In Committee

Louisiana’s version of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” legislation to bar classroom discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity, was killed DEAD n the House Education Committee Tuesday.

The Louisiana Advertiser:

Louisiana House Bill 837 by Republican Haughton Rep. Dodie Horton would prohibit discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through eighth grades or teachers discussing their own sexual identity through the 12th grade. “Unfortunately, some teachers are interjecting their own lifestyle choices into the classroom,” Horton said. “(The bill) defines the line that has recently been blurred by some teachers to share their personal sexual identity and gender preferences with our children.”

Members of the House Education Committee voted 7-4 to keep the bill from advancing.

New Orleans Gay Bars Harassed By Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control Before Mardi Gras

New Orleans Gay Bars Harassed By Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control Before Mardi Gras

Two gay bars in New Orleans. The Phoenix and The Rawhide Lounge are accusing that the state’s Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control (ATC) have unfairly singled them out for citations just one week before Mardi Gras.

In a Facebook post, The Phoenix wrote:

ATC cited us that we were in violation of some state laws. The citations were not unlike what we have seen them recently give other gay bars. We plan on attending our hearing and stating our case.

An attack on one of us is an attack on all us. We hope you stand with us…. We have been so honored to be a part of this community for more than 35 years. We love hosting the local queer groups for monthly fundraisers and special events.

As we work toward our hearing date, the entire bar is open, upstairs and down.

In the past the ATC has suspended three bars’ liquor licenses over charges of facilitating sex work, underage stripping and drug sale.

Louisiana law prohibits public and non-public “indecency,” but the law is vaguely written and selectively enforced. The Phoenix is known for it’s upstairs “dark room” cruising area.

Michael Musa, Director of Operations at the Rawhide Lounge, told Big Easy magazine the ATC imposed “numerous fines, citations, and imposed regulations on how to operate,” after the city’s 2018 Southern Decadence celebration:

According to Musa, when The Rawhide’s lawyer asked the ATC commissioner why the citations issued were harsher than those previously given to New Orleans strip clubs charged with prostitution, the commissioner said that she “felt these violations were worse.” The lawyer then asked if she truly felt that “acts between two consenting males in a restroom” were worse than prostitution. The commissioner backtracked.

The New Orleans Human Relations Commission (HRC), the city government’s civil rights office, has also issued the following statement:

We are aware of the recent enforcement actions taken against the The Phoenix, The Rawhide and others. We stand with our LGBTQ+ residents and our LGBTQ+ owned businesses and we always will. These enforcement entities are *not* under the City’s control, but we are concerned whenever our residents feel targeted. We are actively engaging all involved and will continue to do so.

It’s estimated that about 100.000 LGBT people visit New Orleans during Mardi Gras.

Homo Sex Hating “Official Street Preacher” Arrested at Southern Decadence in NOLA – VIDEO

This year as thousands of revelers descended on Southern Decadence the annual six-day event held in New Orleans, Louisiana held by the lesbian and gay community so did the anti-gay hate group the “Official Street Preachers”  who believe that 39 books of the Old Testament and the 27 books of the New Testament were directed and inspired by God. It contains no errors, and is the final and only authority in all matters of faith and doctrine. That it authoritatively speaks to questions of
creation, chronology, existence, law, history and life styles.

In other words they are fucking insane.

The group came to New Orleans to disrupt Southern Decadence carrying Westboro Baptist inspired signs harassing party goers on Royal St. who was  waiting for the Decadence parade.

Right before the parade kicked off a New Orleans state trooper arrested one of the “godly” men for harassing and physically assaulting a female parade bystander.

Exact details of the arrest were unavailable at the time of this posting,

New Orleans Gay Bar Customers Told To “Get Ready Fags” By Passersby After Trump Election Win

Blaise Navarro of New Orleans wrote on his Facebook page that last night after work he went to The Bourbon Pub, a popular gay bar in the French Quarter right on the edge of the gay section of Bourbon Street, to watch the election results.  After heading out for a smoke he and other bar patrons were harassed by groups of  homophobes emboldened by Donald Trumps surprise presidential victory

Dear America,

As I got off work and went to The Bourbon Pub for a minute to greet friends and catch up on the election results the following happened.

I went outside to smoke a cigarette and sometimes, I use e liquid juice if I feel like being creative. People passing the bar on the street were jeering at my friends, acquaintances, and strangers. What were they saying? Things like, “Worried, faggots?” Or “Get ready, fags.” Or just flat out screaming, “Faggots!” And then just continued walking.

In the 8 years that I have been a regular patron of the French Quarter gay community I have never heard or experienced that on Bourbon St.I know LGBT rights were not the only thing on the line in this election. I know its selfish to assume as much. What is not selfish is knowing that as the end is drawing near in the results my life and the lives of others in many minority communities are at risk. This freely expressed hatred is the monster that is being unleashed.

So thank you. Thank you for the intolerance. Thank you for the ignorance. Thank you for the bigotry. Thank you for the hatred. Thank you for making it possible for people to no longer fear repercussions. Thank you for the fear that I and so many others will now have just to walk down the street.

Sincerely, fuck you!

Get ready people. This is only the beginning and we have have a long fight ahead of us.

So please BE CAREFUL and be prepared.

Hate Crimes Against New Orleans Gay Activists Caught On Tape – Video

New orleans Hate crime

John Hill and John Weimer, Jr., two prominent New Orleans gay activists have become victims of anti-gay vandalism in New Orleans.  But in this case surveillance cameras on Saturday night caught  a man stealing the Pride flag from in front of their historic district home and spray paining the word “fags” on their front door.

New Orleans Police Department is seeking assistance in identifying him.

The Times Picayune reports:

The video, filmed from a neighboring gallery, shows a van parking directly in front of Hill’s townhouse in historic Julia Row, in the 600 block of Julia Street. A man emerges, walks to the rear of the van and pulls down a ladder. He walks to the sidewalk, sets the ladder in place, climbs up it and tears the flag from Hill’s second-story balcony. He puts the flag and the ladder in the van.

Then, instead of leaving, the man re-emerges holding a can of spray paint. He sprays an anti-gay slur on a shutter before getting back in the van and driving away.

Said Hill after the crime; “I thought what an idiot. He thinks he’s intimidating me, well, you got the wrong gay fella. I’m just doubling down now.”
