Today In Gay History – June 19th: King James Was A Queer, Republicans Are Evil and Jerry Falwell “AIDS is a Punishment From GOD!”

Jerry Fawell in Hell

JUNE 19th;

1312 – Piers Gaveston, French favorite (and probable lover) of Edward II of England, was murdered on this date.

1566King James I of England and Ireland and VI of Scotland was born on this date. Responsible for the version of the bible that bears his name, some of James’s biographers conclude that Esme Stewart (later Duke of Lennox), Robert Carr (later Earl of Somerset), and George Villiers (later Duke of Buckingham) were his lovers. Restoration of Apethorpe Hall, undertaken in 2004–2008, revealed a previously unknown passage linking the bedchambers of James and Villiers.

1900 – Birth date of American novelist Laura Z. Hobson. Her best known work is “Gentleman’s Agreement” (1947). A later novel, “Consenting Adult” (1975), about a mother dealing with her son’s homosexuality, was based on her experience with her son, Christopher.

1954 Senator Lester C. Hunt (D-Wyoming) committed suicide on this date following blackmailing attempts by two Republican Senators regarding the arrest of Sen. Hunt’s son for soliciting a cop in a park across from the White House. Sen. Styles Bridges and Sen. Herman Welker were the Republican hate-mongers who forced the D.C. police to prosecute Hunt’s 20-year-old son and namesake for a first-time offense usually left to the family to deal with quietly. Republican Sen. H. Styles Bridges, who orchestrated the blackmail attempt of Wyoming Sen. Lester Hunt was convicted of the crime.

1971 – The first gay pride week in Ann Arbor, Michigan began. It had been decreed by the city council.

1975 – The American Medical Association passed a resolution urging all states to repeal laws criminalizing homosexual acts between consenting adults. 1979 – A judge in Catskill, New York awarded permanent custody of a 13-year-old boy to his father, a gay minister. His reasoning was that the father does not abuse the child in any way, contrary to what he sees out of many “so-called straight people.”

1983 – In Lynchburg, Virginia, hate-monger Jerry Falwell told his followers that “AIDS is not just God’s punishment for homosexuals, it is God’s punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals.” and that no medication could halt the judgment of God.

Falwell founded Lynchburg Christian Academy (now Liberty Christian Academy) in 1967 and Liberty University in 1971 and co-founded the Moral Majority in 1979 which was the beginning of the LGBT hate groups of the day suck as the Family Research Council, Focus on the Family, and the American Family Association .

By 1975, the Internal Revenue Service moved to revoke the tax-exempt status of Bob Jones University, which forbade interracial dating (blacks had been denied entry until 1971). The decisions infuriated Falwell. “In some states it’s easier to open a massage parlor than to open a Christian school”, Falwell complained.

The Moral Majority became one of the largest political lobby groups for evangelical Christians in the United States during the 1980s.  The Moral Majority was promoted as being “pro-life”, “pro-traditional family”, “pro-moral” and “pro-American” and was credited with delivering two thirds of the white, evangelical Christian vote to Ronald Reagan during the 1980 presidential election.

On his evangelist program The Old-Time Gospel Hour in the mid 1960s, Falwell regularly featured segregationist politicians like Lester Maddox and George Wallace. About Martin Luther King he said: “I do question the sincerity and nonviolent intentions of some civil rights leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mr. James Farmer, and others, who are known to have left wing associations.”

In speaking of the Brown vs. Board of Education ruling, he said, in 1958:

If Chief Justice Warren and his associates had known God’s word and had desired to do the Lord’s will, I am quite confident that the 1954 decision would never had been made. The facilities should be separate. When God has drawn a line of distinction, we should not attempt to cross that line.

In 1977, Falwell supported Anita Bryant’s “Save Our Children” campaign, to overturn an ordinance in Dade County, Florida prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. In urging the repeal of the ordinance, Falwell told one crowd, “Gay folks would just as soon kill you as look at you. Falwell also  supported the similar Brigg’s Initiative that Harvey Milk helped defeat in California.[

Falwell also regularly linked the AIDS pandemic to LGBT issues and stated,  Amongst his many remarks over the years he is probably most known for statements attributed to him about a Teletubby being a homosexual role model for homosexual recruitment and stating that LGBT organizations angered God, thereby in part causing God to let the September 11 attacks happe .

In early 2005, Falwell was hospitalized with a viral infection, discharged, and then hospitalized again on May 30, 2005, in respiratory arrest. President George W. Bush contacted Falwell to “wish him well”.

On May 15, 2007, Falwell was found without pulse and unconscious in his office at about 10:45 a.m., after he missed a morning appointment, and was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital. “I had breakfast with him, and he was fine at breakfast…He went to his office, I went to mine and they found him unresponsive” said Ron Godwin, the executive vice president of Falwell’s Liberty University. His condition was initially reported as “gravely serious”; CPR was administered unsuccessfully.

Christopher Hitchens  described Falwell as aa “faith-based fraud.” Hitchens took special umbrage with declaration that 9/11 represented God’s judgment on America’s sinful behavior; deeming it “extraordinary that not even such a scandalous career is enough to shake our dumb addiction to the ‘faith-based.'”  Appearing on CNN a day after Falwell’s death, Hitchens said, “The empty life of this ugly little charlatan proves only one thing: that you can get away with the most extraordinary offenses to morality and to truth in this country if you will just get yourself called ‘reverend’.” On C-SPAN, Hitchens made the comment that “if Farwell had been given an enema before his death, he could have been buried in a matchbox.

1989 – The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force announced that executive director Jeff Levi would be leaving and Urvashi Vaid would replace him.

1995 – On this date the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of HURLEY V. IRISH-AMERICAN GAY, LESBIAN, AND BISEXUAL GROUP OF BOSTON unanimously voted to allow Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade organizers to ban Gay groups from marching in the city’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.  Hurly is considered a landmark decision regarding the right to assemble and for groups to determine what message is actually conveyed to the public.

1998 – The Associated Press reported that Keith Goddard, leader of Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe, was arrested on sodomy charges. A man who was blackmailing him turned him in to police.

1998 – Governor Tony Knowles of Alaska vetoed a bill that would have criminalized sex by anyone who was HIV positive, even if the virus was not transmitted.

1998 – A Superior Court judge in San Francisco ruled that a regulation that bars gays and lesbians from serving in the California National Guard was unconstitutional. Lt. Andrew Holmes had brought the suit.

Longtime Gay Activist Cleve Jones: Corporate Money Is Destroying LGBT Organizations

In an interview with Edge Boston  longtime gay activist Cleve Jones, a close friend of Harvey Milk,  claimed that he fears the LGBT movement may be losing its way and that corporate money has too strong an influence.

The HRC,  GLAAD, and the National Lesbian and Gay Task Force  is “either remarkably tone deaf, and incredibly cynical or it was maybe bought and paid for.” Jones said as  pointed to the brouhaha over the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation’s initial endorsement of AT&T’s decision to merge with cell phone service provider T-Mobile and HRC’s appointment of Goldman Sachs (the corporation which started the current economic countdown) CEO Lloyd Blankfeild as a spokesperson for its national marriage equality campaign.  Jones fears that corporations that pour large amounts of money into the Human Rights Campaign, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and other national LGBT organizations have turned the groups into nothing more than “corporations”

Asked if he though President Barack Obama will endorse marriage equality before the November election, Jones said “I kind of doubt it. But I will vote from him, I will campaign for him.  With all of his problems, he is infinitely better than what the other party has to offer.”

Indiana Senate Approves Gay Marriage Ban. Where the HELL was HRC and The Task Force?

Today by an overwhelming majority of 40-10 the GOP-dominated Indiana Senate voted to add a ban on same-sex marriage and civil unions in the state constitution joining Ohio as having one of the strictest state DOMA laws on the books.

We knew it was coming.  Its been on the LGBT news and LGBT blog circuits for weeks.

My question is where the hell was the Human Rights Campaign and The Task Force and what, if anything did they do or even try to do to stop this from happening?

Did they organize petitions?  Letter writing campaigns?  Protests? Phone call swarms to the Indiana Reps?  As far as I know the answer is no.

You see the Gay Inc on the National level would never dirty their hands fighting in Middle America.  After all they have a hard enough time in Washington DC.  But you can bet that if it was Californian, New York, or Washington, DC that had a gay marriage ban set for a vote they’d be all over it. And there would be press releases and petitions flying because it makes good press (and is good for donations) and besides who cares about Middle America right?  Even though Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Kansas, Iowa and also the South is where this where the homophobic hate breeds and where many anti-gay hate groups start.

So while HRC sits in their 8 Million dollar office building in Washington DC, and readies the sacrilegious HRC “gift shop” in Harvey Milks Camera Store in San Francisco and “The Task Force” is busy working on their next “Creating Change Conference” which really creates no change really but does make a nice chuck of change for The Task Force and makes it seem like they are actually doing something, today in Indiana Lesbians and Gays were officially deemed again as second class citizens in Indiana.

Until those who claim that they lead us and gleefully accept millions upon millions of gay dollars every year to supposedly fight for our rights refuse to get out of their ivory office towers and stop throwing gala’s and learn to throw down and FIGHT in the places where the hate festers, breeds and spreads like cancer outward there will be no change, and we will never win our rights.

Thanks for nothing, as usual Gay Inc.

Target Tells It’s Employee’s: Gay Inc. Loves Us, Especially "The Task Force"!

TARGET Corp who gave $150K to MN Forward/ anti-gay Tom Emmer– then 5 days later apologized for it promising to be more careful in the future –  then proceeded – after that so-called apology – to give another $30K to some of the most rabidly anti-gay candidates ever both in and outside of Minnesota in the 2010 election cycle. Is letting its employees know that it embraces us gays and that Gay Inc embraces TARGET as pictured above in the Target Employee newsletter (that has

National Gay and Lesbian Task Force logo on the bottom)

Target participated in the NGLTF (Now only The Task Force they dropped the “Gay” and “Lesbian”.) 23rd annual “Creating Change” conference in February which really creates no change at all but does make “The Task Force” look like it’s actually doping something and a a nice chunk of money which I am sure that Target donated some $$$ into because why else in Harvey Milks holy name would “The Task Force” even allow TARGET to attend and participate?

Gay Inc and greed and lack of integrity go hand in hand it seems especially where TARGET in concerned.

Above we have The Task Force, earlier this month we had GLAAD who gave Ricky Martin the “The Vito Russo Award” at it’s latest round of Media Awards for being a gay role model even though Martin signed an exclusive distribution contract with TARGET a month earlier for his new album.  And the HRC who after Target’s donation to anti-gay Tom Emmer became public tried to get Target to donate a matching sum of money to a “pro-gay” organization to make up for it, namely them, which TARGET didn’t.

Until our LGBT Organizations drop the greed, move out of their multi-million dollar offices and gain some self-respect and integrity and fight for our rights because of a passion to do so and not a nice fat paycheck will we get anywhere.

Harry Reid and John McCain Working Togther To Drop DADT Repeal, WSJ Predicts That The DADT Repeal Is All But Doomed

Word is trickling in that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is going to strip DADT from the Pentagon bill altogether.and is working with none other than DADT Repeal hater Sen. John McCain to do so. And also that Sens. Carl Levin of Michigan and John McCain  the top Democrat and Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, are in talks on stripping the proposed repeal and other controversial provisions from a broader defense bill, leaving the repeal with no legislative vehicle to carry it.

It’s said that Reid is moving forward with a bipartisan attempt to more swiftly pass a military budget bill — at the expense of openly gay troops. And that the two top Senate Armed Services Committee members, the WSJ reports, are working to keep DADT repeal out of the bill.

Harry Reid, fresh from a career-saving election victory, is seems is now celebrating by throwing gay troops under the bus. And working with one of the Senate’s most homophobic officials, a guy who Reid himself said of, in 2008, “I can’t stand John McCain.” And just two months ago, in debating immigration attachments to the defense bill, Reid addressed McCain publicly:

“Any American so courageous and patriotic that he or she wants to serve our country in the military should be able to do so. Senator McCain and anyone else who thinks the DREAM Act is not directly related to our national security should talk to the brave young men and women who want to defend our country but are turned away. Senator McCain should know better than anyone that patriots who step up to serve our grateful nation should be offered a path to citizenship, and that anyone who volunteers to serve should be welcomed regardless of their sexual orientation.”

This news is simply mind boggling.  Not only for the fact that Reid and the Dems are willing to kill DADT.  But that they are doing it for “Bipartisanship” and bending over to the Republicans especially since for the past two tears the republican party has been the definition of “obstructionist” and showed absolutely no bipartisanship at all .

While what the Democrats might be doing is reprehensible by throwing gay troops under the bus.  It is not only their fault.  MUCH of the fault needs to be laid at the feet of the HRC and the NGLTF for NOT doin g their jobs and not forcefully pushing the LGBT agenda these past two years.  I’ve said it before.  Mike Petrelis at the Petrelis Files has said it, and now John Aravosis at AMERICAblog Gay adds his take on it.

If HRC and Obama couldn’t even get one of their top three promises to our community (DADT, DOMA, ENDA) done with supermajorities in both houses of Congress, a president with a 70% approval rating, and a GOP opposition in utter ruin, then what good are they?

We do not have a friend in the White House, nor do we have an advocacy group in HRC. Neither has our community’s best interests at heart. And both are equally responsible for this utter debacle.

We should not forget that HRC and out other Gay Inc. orgs have s totally failed us and sold us out long before now and that THAT is where the real root of our problem lies.
