Even before the end of the presidential debate between President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney had concluded on October 3 when Romney pledged to end the U.S. federal government’s subsidy for the Public Broadcasting Service despite his professed “love” for Big Bird, Michael Bellavia, 43, an animation executive from Los Angeles, and Chris Mecham, 46, a university student in Idaho were already working on a way to save Big Bird and PBS from possible extinction in the form of a puppet-based protest next month dubbed the “Million Muppet March.”
Coming from rural Idaho, Mecham said he was aware how important public broadcasting was in sparsely populated areas that receive no other signals over the air.
“Romney was using Muppets as a rhetorical device to talk about getting rid of public broadcasting, which is really so much bigger than Sesame Street,” Mecham said. “While he was still talking I was thinking of ways I could express my frustration at that argument. Before the debates were over I had put up the Million Muppet March Facebook page.”
The demonstration is planned for November 3 at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., three days before the general election.

The Jim Henson Company creator and owner of The Muppets which in the past has had promotional deals set up with Chick-fil-A’s for its childrens’ meals which included promotional toys, a series of Bear in the Big Blue house books, five Pajanimals books in 2011, and a Jim Henson’s Creature Shop toy series in 2012 has severed all business ties with the company.
The Jim Henson Company will also donate all payments from the company to them to an LGBT organization and has joined the National Boycott due to Chick-fil-A’s anti-gay stance.
Via The Henson Company’s Facebook page:
The Jim Henson Company has celebrated and embraced diversity and inclusiveness for over fifty years and we have notified Chick-Fil-A that we do not wish to partner with them on any future endeavors. Lisa Henson, our CEO is personally a strong supporter of gay marriage and has directed us to donate the payment we received from Chick-Fil-A to GLAAD.
Wonderful move by the Henson Company but one point does have to be made clear here.
Chick-fil-A is not only anti same-sex marriage. They are Anti-Gay PERIOD.
Chick-fil-A’s charitable arm has donated MILLIONS to anti-gay groups and nationally recognized hate groups whose hateful agendas go far beyond same-sex marriage but extends to other issues LGBT related issues as fighting ENDA and the repealing of DADT.
Also, one of Chick-fil-A recipients was Exodus International an “ex-gay” organization that uses conversion therapy to attempt to turn gay people straight and has ruined the lives of countless of thousands of gay men and has even led some to commit suicide.
Chick-Fil-A is not only anti same-sex marriage. They are anti-gay everything plain and simple.
This is not a just a one issue subject and we shouldn;t let it be portrayed that way.
