GOP and “Christian” Conservatives Gunning For U.S Ambassador to El Salvador Mari Carmen Aponte Over Gay Rights

Mari Carmen Aponte, ia a Washington lawyer and Hispanic activist, who ahs been serving as U.S. Ambassador in San Salvador since  Obama, in response to Republican opposition to her nomination, made her a recess appointee in September 2010 afte.

Aponte’s  temporary appointment is about to run out and once again the GOP lawmakers are up in arms resisting a  Senate confirmation because of old, unfounded rumors that her boyfriend was a Cuban spy and new GOP “christian conservative” outrage over a summertime opinion piece that Aponte wrote on gay rights. in La Prensa Grafica, a daily newspaper in El Salvador,  in response to a State Department cable to ambassadors worldwide urging them to recognize gay pride month.

Thirteen years ago, during the Clinton administration.   Reports about Aponte surfaced (vis Jesse helms) that a former live-in boyfriend, Roberto Tamayo, had ties to Cuban intelligence in Fidel Castro’s regime and that Cuban intelligence agents had tried to recruit her. The FBI cleared her. Amd on two occasions, Aponte has received top-secret security clearances.

But whats really upsetting the GOP is the Op-Ed that Aponte wrote on June 28, 2010 for La Prensa Grafica.

In the Spanish-language piece titled, “For the Elimination of Prejudices Wherever They Exist,” Aponte wrote: “No one should be subjected to aggression because of who he is or who he loves. Homophobia and brutal hostility are often based on lack of understanding about what it truly means to be gay or transgender. To avoid negative perceptions, we must work together with education and support for those facing those who promote hatred.”

Even though El Salvador was among the than 80 nations that had signed a U.N. declaration for the elimination of violence against gays and lesbians and El Salvador President Mauricio Funes had signed a decree in May 2010 prohibiting discrimination by the government based on sexual orientation the GOP is using this to lead a crusade to block Apointe’s permanent apointment  because several Salvadoran family and religious groups have complained that Aponte is “abusing her diplomatic status, showing a clear disdain concerning our values and cultural identity.”

Jim DeMint who is leading the crusade to block Aponte re-appointment is using the GOP and El Salvadores homophobia and the old speculation about her personal life now to wage a war against her. “Our relationship with the Salvadoran people has been one of trust and friendship for decades.  We should not risk that by appointing an ambassador who shows such a blatant disregard for their culture and refuses to clear unsettled doubts about her previous relationships. It’s time to bring Ms. Aponte home.”

Hero Of the Day: School Teacher Matt Tratner Wears "OUT And I’m Not Alone" T-Shirt To Work

Matt Tratner, a teacher and guidance counselor at New York’s prestigious John Bowne High School has had enough of the demonetization and penalties that openly gay teachers have suffered recently.  Tratner went in to work on Wednesday wearing a shirt that boldly states “OUT And I’m not alone.”  And then posted a photo of himself wearing the shirt on Facebook with the caption

“Yes- I am OUT at my job… Yes the students like my shirt.”
There has suddenly been a backlash and attacks from the religious right and its deluded followers that gay teachers are facing having come under attack in ways reminiscent of Anita Bryant framed the Save Our Children campaign in the 1970’s. Last month, Senator Jim Demint proclaimed that sexually active gays and lesbians shouldn’t be allowed to teach. And in Oregon, Seth Stambaugh a gay student teacher was unjustly fired because he responded to a student’s question about why he was single by saying the law didn’t allow him to marry a man.
Tratner’s shirt is inspiring because it spits in the face of those who would like to turn back the clock to a time when  homosexuals was being challenged on a daily basis and when gay professionals, especially teachers, hid in the closet.
This is activism.  This is movement.  And this is something we all have to do.
HRC, the NGLTF and our elected Democratic officials have failed us miserably getting or even trying to get  ENDA passed which was supposed to be voted on in 2009. Now it looks like it might not be introduced before 2013 at the earliest.  We cannot rely on them.  We cannot count on them.  For now all we can count on is ourselves and there is safety and power in numbers which is why we must ALL come out, stand tall, be proud and stand and firmly fight against those who out there literally want to destroy us.
Matt Tratner is a HERO.  And its time we all became heroes and stood up,make statement, and look these bigots square in the eye and stare them down and let them know that we are proud of who we are and that we are not going to allow them to push us around.   We need to stand up, speak out, up fight back.  because if we don’t the religious rights hatred sit out there and fester as it has been.
Bravo to Matt Tratner Back2Stonewall’s Hero of the Day!

Homo Say What? – Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.): "If someone is openly homosexual, they shouldn’t be teaching in the classroom"

At the Greater Freedom Rally held at a church in Spartanburg, South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) attempted to convince pastors that economic issues are moral issues and imploring them to help conservatives retake Congress in November.

In addition to rehashing the same old anti-choice talking points on abortion and backing “traditional marriage,” DeMint went even further and “said if someone is openly homosexual, they shouldn’t be teaching in the classroom and he holds the same position on an unmarried woman who’s sleeping with her boyfriend — she shouldn’t be in the classroom.”

Well I say that is someone has the IQ of a squash and is a hateful bigot and obstructionist that they shouldn’t be in the Senate. So you better start packing Jim DeMented
