Jared Leto Heckled By Trans Audience Member At The Santa Barbara International Film Festival

Jaret Leto

THR is reporting that Jared Leto was “heckled” by a transgender woman from the audience while accepting the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s Virtuosos Award for his performance as transgender AIDS activist Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club.

“Trans-misogyny does not deserve an award,” yelled out the unidentified woman, adding that Leto didn’t “deserve an award for playing a trans-woman” because he is male.

Countering from the stage Leto replied “Because I’m a man, I don’t deserve to play that part?” he asked, rhetorically. “So you would hold a role against someone who happened to be gay or lesbian — they can’t play a straight part?”

Leto and the unidentified woman continued the back-and-forth, arguing that straight people always play transgendered characters and receive awards for it. Leto repeated his argument that by her logic, only straight actors could play straight roles. “Then you’ve made sure people that are gay, people that aren’t straight, people like the Rayons of the world would never have the opportunity to turn the tables and explore parts of that art,” Leto said to applause from the audience.

Though Leto and the woman were spotted after the confrontation having what was described as a “cordial” conversation, both her  and Leto’s  statements (even though his didn’t t really respond to the point that she was making about trans actresses actually playing trans roles) did make valid points about the state of openly LGBT actors in LGBT roles as well as the role of transformation in art.

FIRST LOOK: Watch The HD Trailer for The “Dallas Buyers Club” – Video

Dallas Buyers Club

Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner and Jared Leto star in director Jean-Marc Vallée’s (The Young Victoria, C.R.A.Z.Y.) take on the true story of accidental AIDS activist Ron Woodruff, whose cross-border smuggling network brought much-needed treatments into the hands of HIV and AIDS patients neglected by the medical establishment.

In 1986, the AIDS crisis was still a misunderstood horror, withering then taking its victims, alarming the public and confounding the doctors who sought a cure. In Texas, Ron Woodruff stood beyond the fear of AIDS. He was clueless. So when this boozing, foul-mouthed, womanizing heterosexual contracted HIV, his response was instinctive: Bullshit.

Dallas Buyers Club draws on his true story. When Woodruff (Matthew McConaughey) is told that he has only thirty days to live, he pleads with a doctor (Jennifer Garner) for what was then an experimental drug, AZT. But he refuses to submit to a clinical trial, so he steals the drug — taking his first dose with a beer chaser and a snort of cocaine. When the AZT dosage makes him sick, he seeks out alternative medicine. Never one to heed rules, Woodruff smuggles unapproved treatments over the border from Mexico. Along the way, he strikes up an unlikely alliance with Rayon, a sleek but troubled drag queen, played with stunning conviction by Jared Leto. The pair teams up to sell treatments to the growing numbers of HIV and AIDS patients unwilling to wait for the medical establishment to save them.

This is a tough portrait of an accidental activist, a homophobe who learns to work with, admire, and even love the gay men that illness brings into his life

Dallas Buyers Club opens November 1st in theatres around the country.
