Homeland Security To Begin Monitoring Bloggers, Websites, and Journalists Content For “Sentiment”

Via Bloomberg Law:

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security wants to monitor hundreds of thousands of news sources around the world and compile a database of journalists, editors, foreign correspondents, and bloggers to identify top “media influencers.”

It’s seeking a contractor that can help it monitor traditional news sources as well as social media and identify “any and all” coverage related to the agency or a particular event, according to a request for information released April 3.

The data to be collected includes a publication’s “sentiment” as well as geographical spread, top posters, languages, momentum, and circulation. No value for the contract was disclosed. DHS agencies have “a critical need to incorporate these functions into their programs in order to better reach federal, state, local, tribal, and private partners,” it said

On May 3, UNESCO will once again mark World Press Freedom Day “to inform citizens of violations of press freedom — a reminder that in dozens of countries around the world, publications are censored, fined, suspended and closed down, while journalists, editors and publishers are harassed, attacked, detained and even murdered.

Looks like we may shortly be adding America to that list.

Homeland Security Investigates Facebook Terror Threat Against Columbus Pride

The Columbus Police Department and Homeland Security are looking into a Facebook post that called for the killing of LGBTQ people, ahead of this weekend’s Pride Festival. The post was made to a page dedicated to the event; the poster wrote, “I hope this event turns out like the Boston Marathon a few year’s (sic) back.” The post continues with, “All [LGBTQ people] should be killed or at least relocated.”

Thursday it was confirmed the poster was an employee of the Columbus City School district. The district responded to our inquiry by saying, “We have also been made aware of his inappropriate comments and are working to address the situation.” There has been no word on what disciplinary action has or will be taken; the employee appears to have used a personal Facebook account to make the comment. Columbus Police say they are looking into the post, and have informed Homeland Security which is now also getting involved. –  via NBC News

Chris Dodds, 48, who’s Facebook page was extremely alt-right and white supremacist leaning has since been removed by either Facebook or Dodds himself.

Dodd is a garage assistant supervisor who has worked for the school district since 2004.

Columbus City Schools is working  on his termination

“Columbus City Schools values and celebrates its diversity. Please know that we are working with authorities to address this matter and his actions. We do not tolerate discrimination of any kind,” said Scott Varner, a spokesman for the school district. “We are currently working toward Mr. Dodds’ termination.”

The school district does have a policy on free speech in non-instructional settings that states, “The professional staff member’s expression must be balanced against the interests of this District. The following guidelines are adopted … to avoid situations in which the professional staff member’s expression could conflict with the District’s interests.

More than 400 teachers, staff, students plan to march in Saturday’s Columbus Pride Parade to counter Dodds hate.
