Bill Clinton Accepts GLAAD Media Award, Does Not Apologize (Again) for DOMA or DADT – VIDEO

Bill Clinton GLAAD award

Last night was the second installment of the $500 dollar a plate ($1000.00 for V.I.P seating)  24th GLAAD Media Awards held at the JW Marriott in Los Angeles, CA.  former President Bill Clinton was the “star attraction”  and the controversial recipient of the Advocate for Change Award.  And  during his speech once again Clinton did not mention his role in signing DOMA and DADT into law, nor did he apologize for it. Instead  he gave the credit of  his “evolution” on LGBT equality to his daughter, Chelsea Clinton who made a surprise appearance after his speech to present him the award.

Said Clinton: “(Chelsea) had a profound impact on the way I see the world. Chelsea and her gay friends and her wonderful husband have modeled to me the way we all should treat each other.”

And while Clinton ignored all responsibility for both DOMA and DADT he talked about his present support that DOMA  be struck down.

‘I want to keep working on this until not only DOMA is no longer the law of the land, but until all people, no matter where they live, can marry the people they love,’ he said. ‘I believe you will win the DOMA fight, and I think you will win the constitutional right to marry. If not tomorrow, then the next day or the next day.’

Presenting Clinton with this award has only further cemented the evolution of GLAAD (the organization formerly known as Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) march into irrelevancy.  It’s become apparent to everyone that the awards are not based on merit but on name recognition and draw.  At the first installment of this years awards GLAAD awarded Brett Ratner its “Straight Ally of the Year” who in 2012 was fired resigned from producing the Academy Awards after telling an audience that “rehearsing is for fags.”, and then quickly apologized  and worked with GLAAD  making a celebrity studded “Coming Out for Equality PSA” series not for actually being a selfless straight ally.

And as much as I live Hillary Clinton as for Bill he sold our community out, to The Right Wing, for a few votes bragged about it and never apologized.

The GLAAD Media Awards are a joke, a sham and just further proof of Gay Inc’s elitism and its greed.

After last night Vito Russo (GLAAD’s founder) is spinning in his grave, no doubt.

23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards Announced. And No Back2Stonewall.com Is Not A Nominee

Nominees for the 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards have been announced.

The awards recognize outstanding work in the LGBT community in news coverage and entertainment media.

The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies will be held in New York on March 24, 2012 at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square; in Los Angeles on April 21 at the Westin Bonaventure; and in San Francisco on June 2 at San Francisco Marriott Marquis.  Special Honorees for each city will be announced in the coming weeks.  (Because we all know that the GLAAD Awards are bigger than the Oscars and couldn’t ever be held in just one night)

Nominees include:

Outstanding Movie:  Circumstance; Gun Hill Road;  Pariah; Tomboy and Weekend

Outstanding Drama Series:  DeGrassi; Grey’s Anatomy; Pretty Little Liars; Shameless; and Torchwood: Miracle Day  (What no True Blood?  The Closer? Ugh?)

Outstanding Blog:   Bilerico; The New Civil Rights Movement; Mombian; Rod 2.0; and Towleroad

Congrats to Bilerico and The New Civil Rights Movement!  Well deserved both of you.

As for Towleroad I personally consider it more of an LGBT News site than a “blog” and I wonder why its nominated in that category.  Especially when there were so many outstanding REAL independent blogs this year that worked so hard and get no recognition.  And no I am not talking about myself.  (Okay maybe just alittle, but still.)

Ricky Martin Makes Deal With Anti-Gay TARGET Months Before GLAAD Gives Him An Award

Ricky Martin who came out loud and proud earlier this year may be “out” but his pride is certainly questionable.

Its been discovered that Martin has made merchandising deals with the anti-gay TARGET Corporation which started on January 21 in conjunction with his album Música + Alma + Sexo, and both reportedly performed last week at a corporate event for Target managers in Minneapolis and Martin also appeared and performed at a TARGET event in NYC.

Guess who did not perform at the Target managers meeting at Target Center Tuesday? Lady Gaga. Not that anyone expected her after her falling out with Target over the company’s donations to political action committees that she didn’t approve of. She had a deal with Target to carry an exclusive version of her upcoming “Born This Way” album but she pulled out.

Other stars who do have deals with Target did perform for several thousand store managers on Tuesday.

Our spies report that Ricky Martin and Jennifer Hudson have rocked the day-long meeting thus far

Ricky Martin repeatedly denied being gay until he decided to promote his autobiography and needed an angle to get the press interested in his has-been ass as in the 2001 quote – “If I were gay, why not admit it?… I am a normal man. I love women and sex. I am a real hot-blooded Puerto Rican, but I have never been attracted by sex with a man.”

So Martin is now bringing a new meaning to the phrase “gay for pay”

And that about GLAAD?

Martin signed his deal with TARGET a good 2 months BEFORE awarding him the Vito Russo Award for his work as a role model at its latest Media Award Starfucker Jamboree.  This is just one of the many many examples on just how useless GLAAD has become.

Could there possibly be a more useless and embarrassing gay organization than GLAAD?

Oh, yes, there’s the Human Rights Campaign

And as for Ricky Martin we know all know that you are “Livin La Vida Hypocrite”

The 22nd GLAAD Media Awards Presented Last Night – YOUR Donation Dollars At Work

Last night in New York City GLAAD held its 22nd Annual Media Awards.  The first of THREE Award Ceremonies with the other two being in Los Angeles on April 10 and in San Francisco on May 14

The media awards which happen every year is a star studded evening that cost thousands upon thousands of  your hard earned dollars that you donated to The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation to “amplify the voice of the LGBT community by empowering real people to share their stories, holding the media accountable for the words and images they present, and helping grassroots organizations communicate effectively. By ensuring that the stories of LGBT people are heard through the media, GLAAD promotes understanding, increases acceptance, and advances equality”

This year GLAAD did so by giving awards to Excellence in Media Award to (the straight) Russell Simmons,  the co-founder, with Rick Rubin, of the pioneering hip-hop label Def Jam and  a longtime supporter of marriage equality. GLAAD also awarded the Vito Russo Award to Ricky Martin who came out of the closet about 20 years too late after his career started slipping  Presented Outstanding Drama Series to True Blood (HBO) which I do love but lets face it the gay characters on that show are hardly real portrayals and  far from sympathetic.  And of course an award had to go to silver fox and undercover gay Anderson Copper for his  Gay Teen Suicides” (series) Anderson Cooper 360 (CNN) which in fact VERY GOOD even though it was on CNN which  is one of the BIGGEST offenders of allowing anti-gay hate spokespeople such as Tony Perkins, Maggie Gallagher, and Peter LaBarbera a legitimate platform to spew their vicious hateful lies about the gay community.  And the last I heard the News was media and that is one battle that GLAAD is either too chicken or weak to take on.

As you can tell I am not a HUGE fan of GLAAD.

There have been many problems over the past few years with the GLAAD the organization and the Awards including:

*GLAAD has nominating  the Miller Brewing Company for a Media Advertising Award despite the fact that it also made a commercial that could be deemed homophobic.
*GLAAD being in the midst of Board and financial problems with the possibility of grant misappropriations..
*GLAAD wasting past donation monies to host “Lounges” at The Sundance Film Festival.
*GLAAD’s Network Responsibility Index not being so responsible.

And the list goes on and on……..

Personally I think GLAAD is an outdated, mismanaged, and wasteful organization that right now has no clue what they doing any longer other to throw award gala’s and never really tackle the tough Anti-LGBT media problems the need to be fixed. I think the waste of time and money for these awards is not only a mishandling of funds but also a makes a mockery of their mission statement.

And to make the whole Media Award’s Spectacular even more so unappetizing is the fact that that Here! and Logo, the nation’s two gay TV networks, are not allowed to submit their programs for consideration to the GLAAD Media Awards. because “it would be “unfair” to place the mainstream media in competition against gay networks and publications and rather than raising the bar for the quality of coverage,” he wrote, “it would likely discourage mainstream media outlets who felt they could never compete against a media outlet whose sole purpose is to tell LGBT stories to a largely LGBT audience.”

Because we all know somewhere out there a Hollywood Mogul is specifically creating a gay character, specifically in the hopes of winning the highly coveted and honored GLAAD Media Award.

One thing for sure.  I’ll be GLAD when GLAAD actually realizes it’s own ineptitude and self importance and drops the award bullshit and actually uses the LGBT donation money and grants that its isuued on serious and genuine media problems.

Video – GLAAD Media Award Nominee Miller Brewing Company Airs Homophobic Commercial.

GLAAD has nominated  the Miller Brewing Company for a Media Advertising Award this year for its Miller Lite brand making the case once again that there is no reason for GLAAD to exist and they are woefully out of touch, off base, and in it for the money.

If not how could they nominate Miller for an award while the company is responsible for this commercial.

GLAAD you are an embarrassment.

2010 GLAAD Media Awards – Another Gay Organization, Another Glitzy Party For The Gay Elite

The GLAAD Media Awards which salute fair, accurate and inclusive representation of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives in the media was held Saturday night in a glitzy and expensive ceremony at the Hyatt Regency. (Your donation dollars at work!) Winners – chosen from 152 nominees in 32 categories – were awarded at a March ceremony in New York, while the remainder will be presented at a San Francisco ceremony in June.Last nights ceremony spotlighted the “major” catagories.

Glee won “Best Comedy” and “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy told the audience that next season “Kurt” (Chris Colfer) would have a boyfriend and they would be school prom kings. (OMG, SPOILER MUCH MURPHY?!) Colfer who is is gay; along with lesbian actress Jane Lynch were both on hand.

Other winners included Logo’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race” for outstanding reality program and “A Single Man” for outstanding wide release film. “A Single Man” director Tom Ford wasn’t on hand to receive his trophy. His partner Richard Buckley accepted the award on Ford’s behalf because the filmmaker was stranded in London thanks to the volcanic cloud of ash.

Constance McMillen, the lesbian Mississippi teenager who challenged her school district’s ban of same-sex prom dates, presented comedian-actress Wanda Sykes with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, which is given by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation to an openly gay member of the entertainment community for their work toward eliminating homophobia.

“I’m willing to give this award to you,” Sykes teased McMillen, “but I’m not gonna do it. It means a lot to me.”

Also openly lesbian Iron Chef” Cat Cora presented actress-director Drew Barrymore with the Vanguard Award, which honors efforts to increase visibility and understanding of the gay community.  “The thing that means the most to me about an evening like this, and why I want to fight and be outspoken about this is because there are so many people who are in desperate need of families,” Barrymore said.

Adam Lambert, the glam-rocking “American Idol” runner-up who raised eyebrows with his racy performance at last year’s American Music Awards, capped off the ceremony hosted by transgender actress Candis Cayne and gay actor Wilson Cruz with a performance of his tunes “Music Again” and “Fever.” He ended by pleading for diversity within the gay community.  (Perhaps Adam should have pleaded for diversity within the human race.)

Another party for the elite held with your donations.

Fucking beautiful.

GLAAD Responds To LZ Granderson GLAAD Media Award Nomination Controversy

Yesterday I wrote about GLAAD’s Digital Media Award nomination that LZ Granderson received for an article he had written for ESPN entitled “McMackin’s Slur Reveals Larger Problem” in the same year that he wrote an Op-Ed piece for CNN called “Gay Is Not The New Black” for CNN.com which he pits African American Rights against LGBT Rights using such skewed rhetoric that we were not persecuted, killed, institutionalized, murdered, beaten, and burnt at the stake BEFORE Stonewall, that military discrimination started with DADT totally forgetting that Lesbians and gays were BANNED from joining the Military before that even if they kept it a secret. LZ in his article also goes on to make the following reverse racist statement:

So while the white mouthpiece of the gay community shakes an angry finger at intolerance and bigotry in their blogs and on television, blacks and other minorities see the dirty laundry. They see the hypocrisy of publicly rallying in the name of unity but then privately living in segregated pockets

Nice huh?

The same man who wrote the above then gets nominated in the same year for a GLAAD Outstanding Digital Media Award for a story of some straight football players calling each other “fag” and GLAAD totally ignores the other article which in which he trashes part of the LGBT community and my opinion was bad enough for GLAAD to issue a condemnation on to start out with.

So I emailed Jarret Barrios, President of GLADD and also to Richard Ferraro, Director of Public Relations and received answers from each.

Richard Ferraro’s email stated:

So basically what he is saying is that LZ Granderson gets a pass because he wrote an article for ESPN that reaches a straight audience about grown men calling each other “fags” but yet he writes another article for CNN which reaches a much larger and diverse audience that pits the African American community against the Caucasian LGBT Community and that matters for nothing in their nomination process. (And in full disclosure LZ Granderson is a past GLAAD Media Award Winner)

Hello Will,

LZ is not nominated for his body of work but a piece he wrote for ESPN.com entitled “McMackin’s Slur Reveals Larger Problem”. In the piece he calls out football coach Greg McMackin for repeatedly using anti-gay slurs.

Think of the readers of ESPN.com for a moment if you will. Kind of a good audience to be hearing that anti-gay slurs should not be used on the sports field, no? http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=granderson/090731&sportCat=ncf

But it was Jarret Barrios’ email that really got me:

Will,

I am disappointed that, in disagreeing with our decision to nominate mr granderson, you’ve chosen to make ad hominem comments about glaad. We may disagree on this–people always do–but how would you propose addressing this issue you raise? It seems that an exhaustive search of work that is outside the “body” of lgbt-related content just isn’t practical for the hundreds of writers under consideration for nomination. Am I misunderstanding or isn’t that your ultimate judgment on the matter?

Please consider the practicality of what you’ve said. I am very excited about running a fully transparent process, and appreciate your thoughts–and those of many others. I also owe you my frankness as well.

All the best,
Jarrett

Other than the fact that he accuses me of “ad hominem comments” mostly because my comments were true and if they have been said before then perhaps GLAAD should really start taking them to heart and realizing that many people fell the same way.  But what really got me is:  “It seems that an exhaustive search of work that is outside the “body” of lgbt-related content just isn’t practical for the hundreds of writers under consideration for nomination.”

I do admit that before the field is narrowed yes, it wouldn’t be practical. But after it ‘s narrowed a simple Google search would render you the info that you need. But I think what really got me about this statement is that the article “Gay Is not The New Black” wasn’t exactly a “hidden” article. Just HOW CLUELESS is GLAAD?  Granderson’s article ran as an Op-Ed at CNN and a majority of the most well known and widely read LGBT BLOGS picked it up and commented about it. Sites like Pam’s House Blend, Joe My God, Holy Bullies and Headless Monsters and even AfterElton.com wrote about it and it’s controversy but no one at GLAAD was aware of it? There is nothing wrong with research and there is especially nothing wrong with an organization like GLAAD following the BLOGS of it’s own community to see whats being said and also reaching out to the Blogs and working with them.. Because GLAAD needs to start thinking about the about the way things look from our point of view of the outside looking in, especially after the Lambert clusterfuck.

To be an organization that deals with anti-defamation and then not know what is truly sensitive to the community you serve is a travesty and something that GLAAD will have to work on especially now if it wants to regain any of it’s former integrity and trust back within the LGBT Community.
