Gay History - May 15: Alexander The Great, Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld, Canada Legalizes Gay Sex as Stonewall Begins to Simmer

Gay History – May 15: Alexander The Great, Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld, and Canada Legalizes Gay Sex as Stonewall Begins to Simmer.

356 BC – Alexander the Great is born in Macedonia. One of the greatest conquering generals of all time.\

Alexander’s love of Hephaistion is well accepted as factual history. Upon Hephaistion’s death in battle. Alexander was overwhelmed by his grief for Hephaestion, so much that Arrian records that Alexander “flung himself on the body of his friend and lay there nearly all day long in tears, and refused to be parted from him until he was dragged away by force by his Companions.. As historian Andrew Chugg states, “It is surely incredible that Alexander’s reaction to Hephaestion’s death could indicate anything other than the closest relationship imaginable.”

Alexander’s most controversial relationship was with a handsome young Persian eunuch named Bagoas. At a festival of athletics and arts in a town called Salmus (after Alexander returned from India) Bagoas won a prize. After Bagoas picked up his prize, he walked across a theatre and seated himself beside the king. The Macedonians in the theatre applauded loudly and shouted for Alexander to kiss the winner. At last, the king put his arms around Bagoas and kissed him.

Some historians have denied that the episode even took place, but there is no good reason to question its historicity.

1897 – The Scientific-Humanitarian Committee, (Wissenschaftlich-Humanitres Komitee) was founded by Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld in Berlin, Germany to campaign for social recognition of homosexual, bisexual, and transgender men and women, and against their legal persecution. The committee after 36 years was dissolved in 1933 when the Nazis destroyed the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft in Berlin where the WhK was based.

Fortunately Hirschfeld had left Germany for a speaking tour that took him around the world as his Institute burned; he never returned to Germany.

1969 – Canada decriminalizes private same-sex acts.

In 1969, Canada’s sodomy and gross indecency laws were amended following public outrage over the conviction and sentencing of Everett George Klippert for homosexuality. The Criminal Law Amendment Act, 1968–69 added an exemption to the Criminal Code that made such acts legal under certain circumstances. The individuals involved had to be consenting adults of at least 21 years of age, and the act could only be conducted in private. Sodomy and gross indecency remained illegal outside the house or if three or more individuals were involved or present.

In America it’s a different story

1977 – CBS’ 60 Minutes broadcasts a segment on child pornography, concentrating on “adult homosexuals who prey on small boys.”  As a result, teenagers from a conservative New York Catholic high school go on a gay bashing spree, beating one victim to death. They are later sentenced to 35 and 40 years in prison.

Unfortunately, the 60 Minutes episode has been lost. Or perhaps actually it is fortunate.

Gay History - December 28, 1888: Famous German Director F. W. Murnau (Nosferatu) is Born

Gay History – December 28, 1888: German Director F. W. Murnau of “Nosferatu” Fame is Born

Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau was born December 28th, 1888. An openly gay German director, he is best known for his work  Nosferatu, and on the film Sunrise, widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made.

Born Friedrich Wilhelm Plumpe in the Bielefeld, Province of Westphalia. Plumpe would take the pseudonym of “Murnau” from the town of that name near Lake Staffel, south of Munich, where he lived for a time.

Murnau studied philology at the University in Berlin and later art history and literature in Heidelberg, where director Max Reinhardt saw him at a students’ performance and decided to invite him to his actor-school.

He then joined the Imperial German Flying Corps and flew missions in northern France for two years; surviving eight crashes without severe injuries. After landing in Switzerland, he was arrested and interned for the remainder of the war in a POW camp.

Murnau returned to Germany where he soon established his own film studio with actor Conrad Veidt. His first feature-length film, The Boy in Blue, a drama inspired by the famous Thomas Gainsborough painting, was released in 1919.

Murnau’s homosexuality, would have been more or less accepted in his Berlin artistic circles of the day. Germany, indeed, was one of the gay-friendlier spots in the world until the Nazis took power

Murnau’s most famous film is Nosferatu, a 1922 adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The release would be the only one by Prana Film because the company declared itself bankrupt in order to avoid paying damages to Stoker’s estate (acting for the author’s widow, Florence Stoker) after the estate won a copyright infringement lawsuit. Apart from awarding damages, the court ordered also all existing prints of the film to be destroyed. However, one copy had already been distributed globally. This print, which has been duplicated time and again has made Nosferatu an early example of a cult horror film.

Gay History – October 28: Republican Senator Jesse Helms “Homosexuals and lesbians [are] disgusting” and more.

Jesse Helms

1903:  British writer Evelyn Waugh is born in London. His best-known works include his early satires Decline and Fall (1928) and A Handful of Dust (1934), and of course his novel Brideshead Revisited (1945).

1970:  Kate Millet, American feminist writer, artist and activist comes out of the closet. Millet became a seminal influence on second-wave feminism and is best known for her 1970 book Sexual Politics.

1990: The late Senator Jesse Helms infamously declared in a campaign speech that “homosexuals and lesbians [are] disgusting people marching in our streets demanding all sorts of things, including the right to marry each other.” Helms was disgusted by gays and lesbians, who he called  “weak, morally sick wretches” (1994), and accused them of engaging in “incredibly offensive and revolting conduct”

For nearly two decades, he fought tooth and nail against expanded federal funding for AIDS research, and exploited gays and lesbians as convenient scapegoats in his constant fear-mongering crusade.  In 1987 Helms said, “Somewhere along the line we’re going to have to quarantine people with AIDS.” Helms’ uncaring and disgusting response to the disease was explained by his tirade the next year against the bipartisan Kennedy-Hatch AIDS bill, when he claimed, “There is not one single case of AIDS in this country that cannot be traced in origin to sodomy.” Of course which was a lie.

Helms died of vascular dementia during the early morning hours of July 4, 2008, at the age of 86.  Mitch McConnell of Kentucky eulogized Helms as one of the “kindest men” in Congress, and said, “no matter who you were, he always had a thoughtful word and a gentle smile.”

Jesse Helms is currently burning in HELL alongside Jerry Falwell and his good friend Ronald Reagan. They are waiting on FRC’s  Tony Perkins to check-in and join them so they have a fourth for Canasta.

1990: A high-end event at Carnegie Hall raised $1.5 million for the Gay Men’s Health Crisis. It was reportedly a “three-hour international parade of singers and musicians [and] a demonstration that AIDS is a disease to be feared and resisted not just by several enclaves but by people of every sex, nationality and sexual persuasion.”

1992:  Episcopal Bishop A. Theodore Eastman issued an order to clergy in Maryland not to bless same-sex unions.

1997: The National Black Lesbian and Gay Leadership Forum condemned gospel singers Angie and Debbie Winans for their anti-gay song “It’s Not Natural” and BET-TV for providing them with a one-sided forum to promote their homophobic views.

2009: The first openly gay member of the German government, Guido Westerwelle, took office as Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister to Angela Merkel. – Kiss me Guido!

March 5, 1933: The Infamous Gay Nightclub The Eldorado Cafe In Berlin Closes As Nazi Gay Persecution Begins – Rare Pictures

El Dorade Berlin Closes Nazi Germany Gay History

March 5, 1933 – Germany:

The Eldorado Cafe, aka Tanzlokale für Herrenone  one of the largest gay, lesbian and transvestite clubs in Berlin is shut down nine days after a “Public Morality” directive that gay bars, clubs and cafes be closed. And so began the beginning of the end for thousands of gays, lesbians, drag queens and transvestites in pre-war Berlin.

The Eldorado Cafe in its long history featured regular performances by the likes of Marlene Dietrich, Claire Waldoff and the Weintraub Syncopators, and was widely known to be a regular venue for all genders and sexual orientations.  Customers could buy ‘chips’ to exchange for dances with the regular transvestite hostesses.

Tony’s Smart Set notes:

“Berlin’s 400 or so bars were divided in tourist guidebooks according to a strict taxonomy of desire. Flush heterosexuals might choose the Kakadu, with Polynesian-style décor and caged parrots hanging over each table; when patrons wished to leave, they could tap their glasses and the bird would squawk loudly for the check. Gay men would descend on the Karls-Lounge, where the waiters and “Line Boys” all wore neat sailor’s outfits. Lesbians liked Mali and Ingel, where guests were obliged to dance with the randy owners, or the Café Olala, where some customers liked to dress in Salvation Army outfits. Male cross-dressers went to the Silhouette, female cross-dressers to the Mikado, and everyone the entire sexual spectrum over blurred at the Eldorado, where one dancer, when quizzed by a slumming grand dame as to gender, replied in a haughty voice: “I am whatever sex you wish me to be, Madame.”

In July 1932, new Chief of Police Kurt Melcher began implementing the strict catholic policies of the new Von Papen government and announced “an extensive campaign against Berlin’s depraved nightlife”.  All “amusements with dancing of a homosexual nature” were now subject to an earlier closing time of 10 pm and many bars and dance halls turned themselves into private clubs in an attempt to sidestep the new laws.

In October 1932, the gay scene was dealt an almost fatal blow when the Chief of Police ordered a ban on same-sex couples dancing in public. It was the end for The Eldorado

Within two months of the Nazi’s coming to power in January 1933, and Adolf Hitler, becoming the leader  of the National Socialist German Workers Party (Nazi Party), as the chancellor of Germany. all Berlin  gay bars remained open after except for about 15 of the best-known establishments, which which closed in the first months of their rule. Including the Eldorado.

Under enormous pressure and fearing for his family and livelihood, Ludwig Konjetschni closed the Eldorado and handed the premises over to the local Sturmabteilung  (SA) – many of whom had worked for him and he placed his future in their hands. The SA turned the Eldorado into their new local headquarters.

Then, in June 1934, in part because of political infighting among Nazi leaders, the SA was purged, and Ernst Röhm and the other high-ranking leaders theought to be gay were all killed. It was then that Hitler came to fill power. It was only after that, a full 17 months into the Third Reich, that the deniability could no longer continue and it started to dawn German citizens  that it was going to be in trouble if they continue to be openly homosexual.

In the fall of 1935, the Nazis put in place a more draconian version of anti-homosexual law Paragraph 175 into affect.. It was worded to make it possible for “almost anyone” to be arrested if the Nazis suspected they might be gay. “A criminal act included flirtation.

Convictions multiplied by a factor of ten to about 8,000 – 15,ooo per year. Furthermore, the Gestapo could transport suspected offenders to concentration camps without any legal justification at all (even if they had been acquitted or already served their sentence in jail). Thus hundreds of thousands of homosexual men, lesbians, and then transvestites in Nazi occupied countries were forced into concentration camps, where they were identified by the pink triangle.

The majority of them died there.

The Eldorado Club, , Tanzlokale für Herrenone played a central role in ‘ I Am A Camera’ – the 1955 film adaptation of Christopher Isherwood’s ‘Goodbye To Berlin’.

WORLD NEWS – Turkish Teen Arrested For Plotting to Blow Up Gay Club In Germany

On Thursday German state police arrested Yusuf Erkocoglu, a Turkish teenager caught planning to blow up a gay club in Frankfurt. German media outlets reported that the 17-year-old suspect has both Turkish and German citizenship.

The US government played a role in preventing Erkocoglu ‘s suspected attack, according to the intelligence source in Germany. United States Ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, told the Jerusalem Post : “The US will always work with our German Government partners to thwart acts of terror.

The rise of Islamic terror networks in Germany has created new dangers for Germany, the United States and Jewish and Israeli institutions in the Federal Republic.

Germany To Remove Convictions of 50,000 Gay Men Under Nazi-era Law Paragraph 175

After decades of lobbying, victims and activists hailed a triumph in the struggle to clear the names of gay men who lived with a criminal record under article (Paragraph) 175 of the German penal code.

Germany’s article 175 outlawed “sexual acts contrary to nature … be it between people of the male gender or between people and animals”. Sex between women was not explicitly illegal.

Although it dated from 1871, it was rarely enforced until the Nazis came to power, and in 1935 they toughened the law to carry a sentence of 10 years of forced labour.

More than 42,000 men were convicted during the Third Reich and sent to prison or concentration camps where countless numbers died or were killed.

The article was finally dropped from the penal code in East Germany in 1968. In West Germany, it reverted to the pre-Nazi era version in 1969 and was only fully repealed in 1994.

“More than two decades after article 175 was finally wiped from the books, this stain on democratic Germany’s legal history has been removed,” Sebastian Bickerich, of the government’s anti-discrimination office, said in a statement.

The sinister Paragraph 175  was in effect until 1969. Even after the concentration camps were liberated gay prisoners would be sent to sent to regular prisons to finish out the terms of their sentences.

German Parliament Officially Recognizes Gay Victims of the Nazis for the First Time

Gay Men Convicted Under Nazi Law Paragraph 175 Will Have Records Expunged And Receive Reparations

Yahoo News reports:

The German government Wednesday approved plans to quash the convictions of 50,000 men sentenced for homosexuality under a Nazi-era law which remained in force after the war, and offer compensation.

The measure marks a triumph for activists after a decades-long struggle to clear the names of gay men who lived with a criminal record under Article 175 of the penal code. An estimated 5,000 of those found guilty are still alive.

The legislation was passed by Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cabinet and will soon head to parliament, where her ruling right-left coalition enjoys a large majority. “Article 175 destroyed careers and ruined lives,” Justice Minister Heiko Maas said in a statement. “The few victims who are still alive today deserve to finally have justice.”

The measure follows Britain’s so-called “Turing Law” approved in October, which offered pardons to thousands of men convicted of homosexuality before its decriminalisation in 1967. The legislation was named after World War II hero Alan Turing who was prosecuted under the law in 1952 and forced to undergo chemical castration treatment. He committed suicide two years later at the age of 41.

However the British measure, unlike Germany’s, only automatically pardoned dead people while the living must still make an individual application to have their names cleared. It also failed to provide compensation.

The Nazis believed that male homosexuals were weak, effeminate men who could not fight for the German nation. They saw homosexuals as unlikely to produce children and increase the German birthrate. The Nazis held that inferior races produced more children than “Aryans,” so anything that diminished Germany’s reproductive potential was considered a racial danger.

The police had powers to hold in protective custody or preventive arrest those deemed dangerous to Germany’s moral fiber, jailing indefinitely—without trial—anyone they chose. In addition, homosexual prisoners just released from jail were immediately re-arrested and sent to concentration camps if the police thought it likely that they would continue to engage in homosexual acts.

From 1937 to 1939, the peak years of the Nazi persecution of homosexuals, the police increasingly raided homosexual meeting places, seized address books, and created networks of informers and undercover agents to identify and arrest suspected homosexuals. On April 4, 1938, the Gestapo issued a directive indicating that men convicted of homosexuality could be incarcerated in concentration camps. Between 1933 and 1945 the police arrested over 100,000 men as homosexuals.

The sinister Paragraph 175  was in effect until 1969. Even after the concentration camps were liberated gay prisoners would be sent to sent to regular prisons to finish out the terms of their sentences.

Mike Huckabee Visits Auschwitz and Birkenau: What Happened To Germany Is Happening To America

Mike Huckabee

Mike Huckabee, former Arkansas Governor and current Fox News propagandist has been on a tour of Europe entitled “Reagan, Thatcher, and Pope John Paul II Tour: God Raising Extraordinary Leaders for Extraordinary Times”

Huckabee invited “evangelical pastors from the states of New Hampshire, Iowa, South Carolina, and Nevada on special 10-day tour of Europe… to study the lives (and re-write the histories) of Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and Pope John Paul II  and understand how these three individuals were ‘used by God to change the world’s history.'”

The final stop on this tour which was included for dramatic effect and provided Huckabee the opportunity to compare Nazi Germany and present day America. was to Auschwitz and Birkenau,

The New Civil Rights Movement  explains:

[Huckabee pointed out] The horror that was Hitler’s Germany was the natural by-product of “systematically [removing God and religion] from their culture and their society.” Drawing a parallel to America, Huckabee said, “The soul of America is a sick soul… because it has forsaken and forgotten its God.” How exactly has America forsaken and forgotten its God? By providing equality to the gays, of course:

“The foundation of our society and culture, marriage, not only by which we produce the next generation but it is the entity through which God has chosen for us to create the next generation and train them to be our replacements, and when we tinker with its definition and we decide that it can mean anything we wish for it to mean and that rather than to take a biblical perspective we will take a very human one and we will base marriage on human experience and desire as opposed to biblical standard, then I fear that we will pay the consequences for having upended the very foundation which is the essence of how a civilization survives. So the soul of America is in real trouble.

Nobody knows how many gays and lesbians were interred in concentration camps by the Nazis and/or killed. We face imprisonment and death in 82 countries while this walking piece of shit has the nerve to play victim.

To this day we are STILL paying the price for the failed policies of Reagan & Thatcher. Because of them and the  deregulation & trickle down bullshit there is no middle class today. And how much of the pandemic spread of AIDS could have been stopped and gay mens lives saved if Reagan & Thatcher addressed it at onset instead of  ignoring it and laughing at it behind closed doors for five years as it spread around the globe. BOTH OF THEM are responsible for over thirty million deaths worldwide and are hopefully burning in hell.

Over 80 years ago, Hitler gave a similar speech denouncing the Jews of endangering the foundation of the German nation.

Quite simply, Mike Huckabee is a dangerous and crazy man and he must be stopped before it too late.

The Queen Pardons Persecuted Gay British Codebreaker Alan Turning 60 Years After His Death

Alan Turing

Alan Turing, a British code-breaker during World War II who’s skills and mathematics genius helped lead allied forces to victory over Germany has received a royal pardon nearly 60 years after he committed suicide because of his criminal persecution and the chemical castration he was forced to suffer because of being gay by the country of England in the 1950’s.

Turing developed the Bombe, a code-breaking machine that deciphered messages encoded by German machines. His work helped change the course of the war and save thousands of lives but when his homosexuality became known he was arrested and convicted of homosexual activity, which was illegal at the time and was forces to make a decision between being chemically castrated or prison time. Two years after the castration in 1954 Turing chose ended his life at the age of 41 by eating an apple laced with cyanide.

Supporters have long campaigned for Turing to receive greater recognition for his work and official acknowledgment that his punishment was wrong.

Dr. Turing deserves to be remembered and recognized for his fantastic contribution to the war effort and his legacy to science,” British Justice Secretary Chris Grayling said in a statement Tuesday. “A pardon from the Queen is a fitting tribute to an exceptional man.”

In 2009 a petition that garnered tens of thousands of signatures succeeded in getting an apology from then Prime Minister Gordon Brown for Turing’s treatment by the justice system in the 1950s. Brown described the Turing sentence as “appalling.”

“He truly was one of those individuals we can point to whose unique contribution helped to turn the tide of war,” he wrote, adding, “The debt of gratitude he is owed makes it all the more horrifying, therefore, that he was treated so inhumanely.”

After the announcement of the pardon British Prime Minister David Cameron said Alan Turing was a remarkable man who played a key role in saving this country in World War II by cracking the German enigma code. “His action saved countless lives. He also left a remarkable national legacy through his substantial scientific achievements, often being referred to as the ‘father of modern computing.’ ”

The pardon, under the Royal Prerogative of Mercy, goes into effect Tuesday. .
