In a written statement to Courthouse News, Bjurstrom and San Diego Comic Convention’s chief communications and strategy officer David Glanzer said “from the beginning all that we asked of the defendants was to stop using our Comic-Con trademarks.”
Their statement continued: “San Diego Comic Convention has used the Comic-Con trademarks in connection with our comics and popular arts conventions for almost 50 years. We have invested substantial time, talent and resources in our brand resulting in world-wide recognition of the Comic-Con convention held annually in San Diego. The jury today upheld San Diego Comic Convention’s trademarks as valid. The jury also found that Dan Farr Productions, Daniel Farr and Bryan Brandenburg each infringed San Diego Comic Convention’s marks. San Diego Comic Convention respects the decision of the jury.”
Following the verdict, Salt Lake Comic Con attorney Michael Katz of Maschoff Brennan said they were disappointed by the verdict and believed “we put on case which would support that comic con is generic.”
He said it “seemed like the jury came to some kind of compromise” since they found Salt Lake Comic Con had infringed the trademark but only awarded $20,000 of the $12 million San Diego Comic-Con asked for.
And supporters of the Salt Lake City event took to Twitter and social media after the verdict, rallying around their convention with the hashtag #IStandWithSLCC.
More than more than 140 other “comic cons” are held around the country, which are using the trademark without the San Diego company’s permission including Wizard World one of its largest imitators.
San Diego Comic-Con’s attorney Callie Bjurstrom stated that other trademark infringement claims are to follow.
San Diego Comic-Con has the “right to decide who to pursue and when” but that it was pursuing “the worst offenders first.”
A global ransomware attack is holding more than 60,000 computers hostage. Banks, telephone companies and hospitals have all been ensnared in the worldwide hack, with the malware locking down computers while demanding a hefty sum for freedom.
The attack has hit thousands of computers across China, Russia, Spain, Italy and Vietnam, but the UK hospitals have attracted the most attention because real lives at risk while their devices are locked down.
IT systems and phone lines in National Health Service hospitals were locked up on Friday, in a coordinated attack across the world. The East and North Hertfordshire NHS trust updated its website shortly after the attack, telling visitors that they were “currently experiencing significant problems with our IT and telephone network.” – CNET
The malware was released by a group known as The Shadow Brokers, which recently claimed to have dumped hacking tools stolen from the US National Security Agency (NSA).

Within the first 15 minutes of the Game of Thrones Season 6 finale gay character Loras Tyrell was forced to renounce his sexual orientation and the man he truly loved. “I have laid with other men, including the traitor Renly Baratheon,” he says in his confession. “I’m guilty of depravity, dishonesty, profligacy, and arrogance.” Then the seven-pointed star was carved into his forehead and he had to repudiate everything he once held dear before was he killed when Cersei’s dragon-fire bomb went off under the Sept of Baelor.
Poor handsome Tyrell now joins other GoT gay characters gay characters that have met especially bloody and violent deaths. Renly was killed by a shadow monster that climbed out of Melisandre’s womb. Oberyn Martell, who had his face literally caved in by the Mountain. And Loras had to suffer both physical and psychological violence.
To be fair though many characters die in GoT, but the fact but Loras had to undergo the world’s sickest conversion therapy, and his death is traumatic for gay men who are still trying to shake off the effects of decades of societal oppression and the film and television industry’s representation of gay men either committing suicide or meet an untimely violent death. Loras’ death was especially disturbing coming on PRIDE weekend.
To give credit where credit is due the television version of GoT did make the gay sexuality of these characters more explicit than in the books. George R.R. Martin has not been very gung-ho to adding gay characters to the series. “I’m not going to do it just for the sake of doing it,” Martin said at a book convention in 2014. “If the plot lends itself to that, if one of my viewpoint characters is in a situation, then I’m not going to shy away from it, but you can’t just insert things because everyone wants to see them.
With the gay community demanding more representation in television and film thus we have become more sensitive to gay and lesbian characters getting killed off. There are so few gay characters, it’s hard whenever we lose one of them. Especially when they meet a violent end. Are we still not at the point where they can be a hero or at least live if not happily, at least a content ever after? Not only on GoT’s but any drama
At this point hard to imagine GoT adding any more major characters, let alone any gay ones. But we can always hope that handsome Gendry, the bastard son of Robert Baratheon will stop rowing one day, come out of the closet, get a boyfriend and at least live through the series finale.
The combined gross of Marvel’s superhero movies is in the billions of dollars. The Russian film industry wants to replicate that success, but money isn’t the only goal of such a film. A Russian superhero film has the power to speak to its nation’s values and history, the way Marvel superheroes have done for the USA. Which is to say Russian viewers might prefer to see themselves as the heroes rather than the villains. Guardians, or Zaschitniki, is the closest a Russian film has come to capturing the scope and production quality of the Marvel Universe. In Guardians, a band of men and women from different corners of the Soviet Union volunteer for (or are forced into) a DNA-augmenting program that gives them special powers.
The machine gun wielding (muscle) bear has awoken!
This trailer is like a visual representation of Vladimir Putin’s geeky fanboy wet dream.
Fans of the character and comic claim that DC Comics itself is to blame for not really caring about the comics run. While the reviews for Midnighter have been nothing but positive, the company itself was the brunt of quite a bit of homophobic backlash online when they first announced the gay superheroes run last summer and afterwards did nothing to promote the comic. Not even in the LGBT and gay-geek community.
The character of Midnighter first appeared in Stormwatch (vol. 2) No. 4, in 1998 before appearing in various other comics before getting his own title in June of 2015.
Warren Ellis described Midnighter as “The Shadow by way of John Woo”. Midnighter is rarely seen without his costume and mask. With recurring themes in Midnighter’s adventures being about his love of violence and killing, as well as comments on his sexuality.
In his 2015 stand alone comic run, Midnighter having broken up with (husband) Apollo, has to come to terms with being newly single, as well as tracking down a thief who stole exotic technology from the God Garden and is openly selling it to different individuals. Amongst the items stolen are files containing the origin of who Midnighter really was before the Gardener abducted and created him. After teaming up with Spyral agent Dick Grayson (yes Robin gone rouge) to track down Russian vampire thrill-killers.
It’s reported that in the last issue of comic will reunite Midnighter with his superhero ex, Apollo, and together they will battle his evil creator, Henry Bendix.
In 2013, ComicsAlliance ranked Midnighter as #17 on their list of the “50 Sexiest Male Characters in Comics”.
Well its finally happened. In Uncanny X-Men #600 (re-numbered to acknowledge the landmark), X-men finally ties up several plot threads, including the question of Iceman’s sexuality.
In a previous issue, a time-traveling young version of Jean Grey read the mind of young Iceman, and basically called him ou for hiding that he’s “full gay.” which left things kind of muddles since present-day Iceman has always acted straight and dated women. Young Bobby Drake did confrim to Jean that he is indeed gay and fans of the comic have waited 6 months for the resolution to this conundrum.
Well in No. 600, younger Bobby Drake confronts his older self and asks him about his sexual orientation. What we find out is that Iceman has been living in a closet for his entire life, and just shut that part of himself off to the world and to his teammates. There is no nature-versus-nurture situation, no time-traveling hitch; older Iceman just didn’t want to be persecuted and judged for another part of his life.
Iceman’s story is an important signal to readers and fans of the comic book series. It sends a strong message of inclusion and acceptance and the importance of embracing your true and authentic self. Which Iceman finally does.
Issue #600 marks the end of writer Brian Michael Bedis’ storyline that follows younger versions of the original five X-Men: Iceman, Cyclops, Beast, Angel and Jean Grey.
Iceman will continue to be a gay charcter in the X-Men Universe from this point forward.
AMC’s The Walking Dead will introduce another key comic book character in season 6, that of Paul (Jesus) Monroe.
The character was first introduced in issue 91 of the comics. He is a resident at the Alexandria Safe-Zone who moved to the community from another group called the Hilltop Colony. The character is a rare logical man and skilled adviser with a strong sense of morals and values who is well-adapted to the new world.
He’s also a kickass and GAY!
Paul has displayed exceptional skills in close-quarters combat; it has not been elaborated if Paul has had previous military, law enforcement, or martial arts training before the undead apocalypse began. He has also shown to be an excellent escape artist twice, as he managed to single-handedly untie ropes that bound his limbs.
Tom Payne (Waterloo Road, Luck) has been tasked with the job of bringing Jesus to the small screen.
In the comic the character is introduced as the main core of survivors start to venture outside of Alexandria, bumping into him on his way back to the Hilltop Colony – another community of survivors. serves as a go-between for Rick and the Hilltop, and provides key intel on the series’ biggest bad to date; the leader of The Saviors, Negan. Speaking of that baseball bat-loving psycho, further rumors suggest that a new casting call is out for an actor to tackle the villainous role.
The Walking Dead Season Six will premiere on AMC on October 11, 2015.
