Gay History – Out of the Closet, Off the Screen: The Life of William Haines, Hollywood Golden Age’s First Out Actor – Video

What price Hollywood?

Well it was the title of an early George Cukor film, but it is a question every closeted movie star has probably asked himself.

In 1930, the top box office star was a gay man.

Actor Billy Haines lived with his lover, Jimmie Shields, and never posed on the red carpet with a beard on his arm. By 1933, he was washed up in show business; and by 1936, he had become hugely successful in an entirely new line of work-interior decorator. Out of the Closet, Off the Screen: the Life of William Haines details the extraordinary life of Billy Haines, the only matinee idol who ever decided that Hollywood’s price was too high and walked away from film stardom.

This is the story of Hollywood’s first real gay out actor and close friend of Joan Crawford who didn’t give a damn who knew, chose love over money and persevered despite it all.

Walking Dead Actor Daniel Newman Comes Out As Gay In Heartfelt Video #OUTandPROUD

Actor Daniel Newman, who currently portrays a member of The Kingdom on The Walking Dead has come out as gay in an amazing video after posting to Twitter on Thursday night.

“I’m an actor. The whole world, the industry, is like ‘here’s your big break, you’re on The Walking Dead, you can’t come out, you can’t be in the press, because everything you work so hard for is going to be gone. There’s no gay or bi leading men, no action heroes, your career’s going to be over.’ I don’t care. Because I know what’s right.”

Newman said his decision to come out happened after a  conversation he had while volunteering at a shelter for homeless LGBTQ youth, when a girl came up to him and thanked him for volunteering as a straight ally.

Welcome to the tribe Daniel. #OUTandPROUD

Is Adonis Matt Bomer Too Gay To Be Grey?

There has been a lot of discussion on who would play the strongwilled  Christian Grey for the book adaptation of the book Fifty Shades of Grey with some of Holloywood’s most swoonworthy men. And a name commonly thrown around is the beautiful flawless Adonis Matt Bomer.

Bret Easton Ellis calls the fan xating of the perfection Matt Bomer would be “Ludicrous” . The esteemd writer of American Psycho and Rules of Attraction proclaimed  via twitter that because of Matt being in a longterm relationship with his partner,he  would complicate the role.

Ellis tweeted “I don’t care how good an actor you are but being married to another man complicates things for playing CG…Matt Bomer is NOT about discrimination. It’s about an intensely straight actor wanting absolutely to screw Ana Steele…the most popular book on the planet having Matt Bomer–a gay actor–play Christian Grey is absolutely ludicrous. Why?”

Probably after realizing that he had stirred up some controversy, Bret said “Matt Bomer is NOT about discrimination. It’s about an intensely straight actor wanting absolutely to screw Ana Steele.” He continued on this rant for several more tweets.

The debate over whether an openly gay actor can “adequately” portray a straight man  reached a fever pitch a couple of years ago  when Sean Hayes and others were questioned on their ability to play “strong straight” male roles.

Seriously what the hell is this? I could tell him just because if he read William Shakespeare and Edgar Allan Poe growing up doesn’t mean he’s a great writer couldn’t I? it”s not about sexuality here.

IT’S CALLED ACTING. The notion that any actor can’t portray ANY sexuality is completely ridiculous. And why would’t the writers of Fifty Shades of Grey want Matt? If they’re trying to pull in their key demographic which I presume is 18-49 year old women, who would swoon for this man? Not to mention the multi-millions they would earn from the movie from GAY MEN. Oh yes they’d definitely consider it.

I’m not saying their isn’t a bountiful amount of stereotyping in Hollywood and it’s not hard to believe that some actors are advised to stay in the closet. But I believe that mindset is starting to change. I think the book is terrible but if Matt Adonis Bomer is in it, they don’t have to tell me anything and can just take my money.

I mean seriously, LOOK at this picture of perfection! Bret does not know what he’s talking about.
