Ooops they did it again. And many people are not happy.
Uniformed police officers have been indefinitely barred from participating in Toronto’s Pride Parade.
On Tuesday night, Pride members voted 163-161 to keep uniformed officers out of the parade. Officers can still march, but not in uniform.
“What this vote has told us is we need to better understand what this community feels about police services and how they feel it negatively impacts their lives and so that’s what we’re going to try to do,” said Olivia Nuamah, executive director of Pride Toronto.
The members’ decision means police will be out of the festivities indefinitely, she said. Another vote would be needed to allow uniformed officers back in.
Mayor John Tory said the result of the vote was “deeply disappointing.”
“Division is the enemy to be wary of here for everybody,” Tory said Wednesday. “And so I will be continuing to exert whatever effort I can to see if we can achieve a different outcome. Pride is still some time away. I believe the police should be in Pride,” Tory said to reporters Wednesday.
The vote comes about three months after the organization lifted a ban on uniformed officers taking part in PRIDE, saying the force was welcome to apply to be a part of this summer’s festivities. After a push-back from members of the trans and QPOC . Who say they don’t feel safe with the uniformed officers participating.
In 2016, Black Lives Matter (a non-LGBT specific group) abruptly halted the Pride Parade march, demanding that uniformed police, their floats and cruisers be excluded.
It must be noted that before becoming Executive Director of Toronto Pride Olivia Nuamah was behind and advocated the Black Lives Matters agenda of Police exclusion.
The Facebook community page Vintage Gay Toronto is coming under fire for limiting membership of their group to only homosexual men who were born male and have not changed sexes.
The group describes itself as a place for “memories/discussions of bars, people and events gone by PRE-2000, exclusively for & about Toronto’s gay male community.”
VTG is exclusively for gay MALES (actual, born, genetic) over 18 years old,” it reads. “Are you a gay male in the actual definition? (Member requests will be declined, failing to answer all three questions.)”
San Diego Lesbian and Gay news which first reported on the group reached out to the groups moderator David Bennett, via private asking him if trans men could join. His answer:.
“Sorry, no. The group is for actual homosexual men,” he said. “Dysphoric females are not and can never be men, so are therefore naturally (and quite obviously) excluded.”
When asked about the outrage by trans activists Bennett replied: “I have little care or concern of the opinions of trans activists. “You may quote me.”
Vintage Gay Toronto currently has 755 members.
Hundreds of Irish LGBT’s and straight allies took to the sidewalks dodging spectators and drunks in protest of the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade yesterday on 5th Avenue for the 21st year protesting the parades exclusion of Irish LGBT groups and also calling out the NYPD’s participation in the event.
In a statement, Irish Queers writes:
…when uniformed police march in that private, religious, anti-gay procession year after eyar, they reinforce everything LGBT people already fear: that we’re only ‘served and protect’ if individual police officers happen not to be homophobic; that the NYPD as a whole has not rejected discrimination; and that the default position of the NYPD is that queers can be targeted for discrimination unless someone notices and complains.
The St. Patrick’s Day Parade organizers make clear from the start it religious connections on its website, which states that “throughout our history, the Parade has been held in honor of the Patron Saint of Ireland and the Archdiocese of New York.” which has been behind the exclusion of LGBT participants for decades.
Richard Conway, a Dublin transplant and writer for the The Guardian points out the parade committees “personal and religious bigotry” and how its attitude does not reflect present-day Ireland
What this committee might be ignoring is a simple fact about modern Ireland: It’s okay with gay stuff. Recent surveys have shown that a significant majority of Irish people approve of gay marriage, with a 2012 poll showing that 73% approve of gay marriage being allowed in the country’s constitution. Civil unions have been legal in Ireland since 2010, and received all-party support. And, notably, the Dublin St Patrick’s Day parade has regularly included gay-themed floats.
So in a nutshell three old men on the St Paddy’s Day Parade Committee bow to the Archdiocese of New York and doing so are responsible for 21 years of LGBT discrimination in a parade, that to be honest is nothing more than an excuse to party and get blackout drunk all because Saint Patrick led the snakes out of Ireland and obviously led them to New York where they now sit on the parade committee.

New York City’s Saint Patrick’s Day Parade which is the largest in the world in 1995 won a Supreme Court battle to exclude LGBT groups from marching. Irish Foreign Minister Eamon Gilmore, spoke to LGBT Irish-American LGBT activists in NYC .
“What these parades are about is a celebration of Ireland and Irishness. I think they need to celebrate Ireland as it is, not as people imagine it. Equality is very much the center of who we are in our identity in Ireland. This issue of exclusion is not Irish, let’s be clear about it. Exclusion is not an Irish thing, I think that’s the message that needs to be driven home.”
Thank you Eamon Gilmore.
And to homophobic bigots, the Ancient Order of Hibernians who run NYC’s Saint Patricks Day Parade…..
Erin Go Screw Yourself!
In a video that President Obama has made to coincide with the DNC Grassroots project Organizing for America and DNC Chair Tim Kaine’s email blast to 13,000 Democrats begging for money and support in the 2010 mid-term elections, the LGBT Community is mysteriously absent but in the past, gays and lesbians have been included in lists such as these.
Says Obama in the video, in part: “So that’s what we’re going to do. … It will be up to each of you to make sure that the young people, African Americans, Latinos, and women, who powered our victory in 2008 stand together once again. … If you help us do that – if you help us make sure that first-time voters in 2008 make their voices heard again in November – then together we will deliver on the promise of change, hope, and prosperity for generations to come.”
Democrats have taken LGBT folks’ votes for granted, and failed to come through on most of their campaign promises to us, knowing full well that we don’t have any alternatives and would be fools to vote for Republicans? Why does this all sound so strangely familiar, almost as though it happens every four years? This is part of the problem. The Democrats aren’t the hand that feeds us, we’re (one of) the hand that feeds them. They’ve been slow to understand this, almost retarded in fact.
And now from AmericaBlog Gay comes this news:
There’s a rumor going around politically-connected circles in Washington, DC that White House Chief of Staff and dance belt wearing Rahm Emanuel and Deputy Chief of Staff Jim Messina are so upset that the gay community is challenging the President’s broken promises on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” ENDA, and DOMA that they’re now threatening to cut the gay community off entirely, and do nothing more for the gays for the rest of the Obama administration. (Which let’s get real will probably be only 2 more years.)
If this is true then it only proves what a petty, vindictive little men Obama, Emmanuel, and Messina really are .And it’s well past the time to stand up to them and get in thier face and let them know that we will not take this treatment any longer.
