Via The Washington Post:
Four years after the United States pledged to help the world fight infectious-disease epidemics such as Ebola, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is dramatically downsizing its epidemic prevention activities in 39 out of 49 countries because money is running out, U.S. government officials said.
The CDC programs, part of a global health security initiative, train front-line workers in outbreak detection and work to strengthen laboratory and emergency response systems in countries where disease risks are greatest. The goal is to stop future outbreaks at their source.
Two weeks ago, the CDC began notifying staffers and officials abroad about its plan to downsize these activities, because officials assume there will be “no new resources,” said a senior government official speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss budget matters. Notice is being given now to CDC country directors “as the very first phase of a transition,” the official said. There is a need for “forward planning,” the official said, to accommodate longer advance notice for staffers and for leases and property agreements.”
All our times have come.
Here but now they’re gone
Seasons don’t fear the reaper
Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain, we can be like they are.
For the next 21 days Axl Goode (pictured above) and Taylor Cole are going to remain within their houses and at least three feet away from anyone after realizing that they sat near Ebola-infected nurse Amber Vinson on an airplane from Dallas to Cleveland where they had attended Romanticon, an erotic novel convention.
The man have elected to put themselves into a self-imposed quarantine at the suggestion of the CDC.
I had just come back from a book conference and while there I read on how Ebola affects the body and what it does when you contract the disease and how terrible it is,” Good told the AP via a Skype interview. “So certainly–a lot of fear, a lot of panic. It took a while for it to hit me. That was pretty scary.”
Neither of the men reported having come in direct contact with Vinson or being exposed to any of her bodily fluids in the course of their flight.
Amber Vinson became infected with the virus after treating Thomas Eric Duncan, a Liberian man who began presenting symptoms and eventually died in Dallas, after being met with a fair amount of gross negligence due to not having insurance.
For Thine is the. This is the way the world ends. This is the way the world ends. This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a stripper.
A doctor in Liberia, acting out of frustration for the lack of medication to fight the Ebola virus in his country is reporting success in treating the deadly disease with the HIV medication marketed as Epivir.
Dr. Gobee Logan has given the drug, lamivudine, to 15 Ebola patients, and all but two survived. That’s a 7% mortality rate. Across West Africa, the virus has killed 70% of its victims. Outside Logan’s Ebola center in Tubmanburg, four of his recovering patients walk the grounds, always staying inside the fence that separates the Ebola patients from everyone else. “My stomach was hurting; I was feeling weak; I was vomiting,” Elizabeth Kundu, 23, says of her bout with the virus. “They gave me medicine, and I’m feeling fine. We take it, and we can eat — we’re feeling fine in our bodies.” Kundu and the other 12 patients who took the lamivudine and survived, received the drug in the first five days or so of their illness. The two patients who died received it between days five and eight. Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases says that theoretically, Logan’s approach has some merit. Lamivudine is a nucleocide analog, and other drugs in this class are being studied to treat Ebola.
Epivir (aka 3TC) was invented by Dr. Bernard Belleau while at work at McGill University and Dr Paul Nguyen-Ba at the Montreal-based IAF BioChem International, Inc. It has been a big breakthrough in tri-therapies and is typically prescribed as one of the medications in the combination pills Trizivir and Combovir to fight against HIV.
Just when you thought American Family Association hate groups resident spokesdouche Bryan Fischer couldn’t possibly get any more douche-ier, Fischer cited on his radio program today argued that people with HIV should be quarantined as a public health measure.
Claiming that if both Ebola and HIV are spread through the exchange of bodily fluids, then the same steps should be taken to protect the public in both cases, Fischer asserted that “this is how liberals will always betray, when they don’t realize what they’re doing, they will betray the reality that they are fundamentally conservative at the core.”
“Here’s President Obama saying when you’ve got a public health crisis that is caused by a virus that is transmitted through the exchange of bodily fluids, what do you do? You quarantine it! You even use military assets, if needed, to quarantine the people who have that virus so they cannot transmit it and spread it among the rest of the population”
