Dutch Brass Band To Play ‘Y.M.C.A.’ at Sochi Olympics In Protest – Hey, Hey Hey, Hey, Hey!

Brass Band

The popular Dutch band, Kleintje Pils, says that it will include the popular 1970’s gay disco anthem, “Y.M.C.A.” as part of its musical repertoire this year at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics in protest of Russia’s inhuman anti-gay laws. The band that always performs at Olympic speed skating ovals will perform the iconic song as a sign of support for [LGBT] rights.

Band leader Ruud Bakker told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Kleintje Pils will mix the Village People’s “Y.M.C.A.” in its sing-along repertoire as “a signal.”

Indirect moves by athletes to show support for gays have already caused controversy in Russia. At last August’s world athletics championships in Moscow, Swedish high jumper Emma Green Tregaro sported rainbow colors on her nails. In the final, however, Green Tregaro went with red nails after track officials said her earlier gesture might violate the meet’s code of conduct.

For many, the Sochi Olympics have become a cause célèbre, highlighting the hostility, and in many cases indifference, that Russians have shown toward the plight of the LGBT community since Russian President Vladimir Putin enacted several legislative measures aimed at stopping the spread of what he calls LGBT ‘propaganda’ directed at children. As a result, violence toward that community has increased.

For others, the Sochi Olympics are a slap in the face of human rights and a symbol of an impotent steering committee that has overlooked not only the attacks on the LGBT community but other Russian groups (including the Caucasians) that have fallen victim to the heavy hand of Putin’s government.

I may not be a major protest but at least it is a protest which is more than the Human Rights Campaign has done or has planned.

Dutch Goverment Responds Angrily To John Sheehan’s Statement That A Gay Link Was Responsible For The Srebrenica Massacre

Douchebag of the Day – Retired Supreme Allied Commander John Sheehan

It’s really hard to piss the Dutch off.  But former Supreme (Douchebag) Allied Commander John Sheehan did just that yesterday at a U.S. congressional hearing on repealing the DADT policy and allowing gay soldiers to serve openly.  Sheehan claimed that Reports on the hearing said Sheehan blamed a post-Cold War effort by European nations to “socialize” their forces by, among other things, letting gays serve.

\“That led to a force that was ill-equipped to go to war. The case in point that I’m referring to is when the Dutch were required to defend Srebrenica against the Serbs,” Sheehan said

Carl Levin, chairman of the U.S. Senate’s Armed Services Committee, asked: “Did the Dutch leaders tell you it was because there were gay soldiers there?”

“Yes, they did. They included that as part of the problem,” Sheehan said, according to a webcast on the website of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

“That there were gay soldiers?” Levin then asked.

“That the combination was the liberalization of the military, a net effect was basically social engineering.”

So today The Dutch Defence Ministry basically called Sheehan a LIAR and issued a statement calling Sheehan’s claims “absolute nonsense” and the Dutch press agency ANP quoted the head of the military union AFMP, Wim van den Burg, as saying Sheehan’s comments were “ridiculous” and “out of the realm of fiction.”

For those of you who don’t know or can’t remember the Bosnian Serb forces overran lightly armed Dutch soldiers in the United Nations-designated enclave of Srebrenica in July 1995 and subsequently massacred more than 7,000 Muslim men and boys.

For Sheehan to lie and blame this on gays in thier military is just beyond dispicable..

Dutch Lesbian Speedskater Ireen Wüst Wins GOLD in Vancover

Four years ago, one of the few openly gay out athletes, lesbian Dutch speedskater Ireen Wüst won gold for the 3,000-meter race in Turin. Today, she repeated history

“Pulling all the pieces together, “I’m so proud and happy,” she says of winning gold for the 1,500 meter race this time around (she won bronze in the event in 2006). “I can’t describe how happy I am. I don’t have words for it. I think I’m the happiest person on Earth right now.”

Those are the words of the athlete who was worried talk about her sexuality was overtaking the reason she is in Vancouver: to win. And even we could feel the tears brewing on the medal podium as she received the gold medal around her neck.

Congrats Ireen!
