Former president Bill Clinton’s brilliant (but long) speech last night at the Democratic National Convention was a fact-checker’s nightmare. Many reporters put on a lot of time and effort to run down his many statistics and factual claims, coming up with nothing. But that didn’t stop Associated Press reporter Matt Apuzzo to push the envelope and write what can only be described as a “smear job” by using his own personal opinions instead of actual facts in his article Fact Check – Clinton Claims of Compromise a Stretch
Apuzzo claims that the fact is that both parties Democrats and Republicans are responsible for the gridlock in Washington. His proof? President Obama brought in Rahm Ehmannuel as his chief of staff! Obama and the Democrats have bent over backward, and made many changes and cuts to Affordable Care Act, Health Insurance Reform (aka “Obamacare”) just to get it to pass because of Republican obstructionist and was also willing to push through cuts on foundational Democratic programs: Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid. Republicans refused, and publicly stated they would stop any bills or measures unless it was the ones that they wanted.
But it was Apuzzo’s “fact checking” when Bill Clinton quoted the famous line of the Romney campaign, that they wouldn’t be dictated by fact checkers that takes the cake. What is brave, fearless bullshit journalist Matt Apuzzo’s fact check response? But Clinton got a blowjob!
CLINTON: ‘‘Their campaign pollster said, ‘We’re not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact checkers.’ Now that is true. I couldn’t have said it better myself — I just hope you remember that every time you see the ad.’’
THE FACTS: Clinton, who famously finger-wagged a denial on national television about his sexual relationship with intern Monica Lewinsky and was subsequently impeached in the House on a perjury charge, has had his own uncomfortable moments over telling the truth. ‘‘I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky,’’ Clinton told television viewers. Later, after he was forced to testify to a grand jury, Clinton said his statements were ‘‘legally accurate’’ but also allowed that he ‘‘misled people, including even my wife.’’
Is that a fact check?
It’s time to start fact checking the fact checkers and call them out on their biased bullshit and crap reporting. The AP should retract Appuzo’s article immediately and the Associated Press should apologize for allowing such garbage to be printed under its name.
The Democratic Party unveiled its formal 2012 platform on Monday night. Although short on policy specifics and carefully worded it is almost the exact opposite of the RNC platform in most ways and also is peppered with numerous shots at Mitt Romney, none more so than on the issue of “insourcing'”
“The Democratic Party believes in insourcing so that America can out-build the rest of the world again,” the platform reads. “We want to cut tax breaks for companies that are shipping jobs overseas and for special interests, and instead offer tax breaks to companies that are investing right here in the United States of America, betting on American workers who are making American products we sell to the world that are stamped with three proud words: Made in America.”
“But the Republican Party has nominated a man whose firm invested in companies that were pioneers of outsourcing — and whose plans would actually encourage outsourcing by eliminating all taxes on the foreign profits of U.S. companies,”
Some of the other more interesting parts of the platform include:
Health Care: ” We will continue to stand up to Republicans working to take away the benefits and protections that are already helping millions of Americans every day. We refuse to go back to the days when health insurance companies had unchecked power to cancel your health policy, deny you coverage, or charge women more than men.
At the same time, the Affordable Care Act is not the end of efforts to improve health care for all Americans. Democrats will continue to fight for a strong health care workforce with an emphasis on primary care.”
Same Sex Marriage: “We support marriage equality and support the movement to secure equal treatment under law for same-sex couples. We also support the freedom of churches and religious entities to decide how to administer marriage as a religious sacrament without government interference.”
Abortion: “Democrats will continue to stand up to Republican efforts to defund Planned Parenthood health centers. We oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right. Abortion is an intensely personal decision between a woman, her family, her doctor, and her clergy; there is no place for politicians or government to get in the way”
Guns: “We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation. We understand the terrible consequences of gun violence; it serves as a reminder that life is fragile, and our time here is limited and precious. We believe in an honest, open national conversation about firearms.”
The Democratic platform also goes on to talk about Medicare, Arts Funding, Immigration Reform, and Unions. But while it does mention the Employment Non-Discrimination Act it DOES NOT “officially” include ENDA
