Gay History – September 29: The Judy Garland Show, Hitchcock’s Rope, and Paul Jabarra

Tension and Release: 'Rope', 'Bound', and the Queer Legacy of the Hitchcock Thriller - Film Cred
Farley Granger (l) and John Doll (r) in ROPE – Granger was bisexual in real life and John Dall was a gay man.

1948Rope, an Alfred Hitchcock film with a (very subtle, practically invisible) gay subtext opens in theaters.

Based on the play of the same name by Patrick Hamilton and adapted by Hume Cronyn it was inspired by the real-life thrill kill murder of 14-year-old Bobby Franks in 1924 by gay University of Chicago students Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb.

Starring James Stewart, John Dall and Farley Granger, this is the first of Hitchcock’s Technicolor films, and is notable for taking place in real time and being edited so as to appear as a single continuous shot through the use of long takes

The screenplay was written by Arthur Laurents. Both Farley Granger and John Dall, were gay.

The original play that it was based on more explicitly portrays the characetrs of Brandon and Phillip in a homosexual relationship.  But the movie is considered one of Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpieces.

1963 – Judy Garland’s variety show debuts Sunday on CBS.  While Judy Garland herself was popular with critics and fans, unfortunately the variety show itself was not.

CBS put the show up against Bonanza, then the fourth most popular program on television, and consistently performed poorly in the ratings. Although fans rallied in an attempt to save the show, CBS cancelled it after a single season.

TV Guide included the series in their 2013 list of 60 shows that were “Cancelled Too Soon”

1992 – Actor, singer, and songwriter Paul Jabara (Last Dance) dies from AIDS at the age of 44.

Jabara was in the original cast of the stage musicals Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar. He took over the role of Frank-N-Furter in the Los Angeles Production of The Rocky Horror Show when Tim Curry left the production to film the movie version in England.  Jabara wrote Donna Summer’s “Last Dance” from Thank God It’s Friday,  Barbra Streisand’s song “The Main Event/Fight”(1979), and co-wrote the Weather Girls hit, “It’s Raining Men” with Paul Shaffer.  Paul Jabara won both Grammy Award for Best R&B Song and the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Last Dance” from TGIF in which he also played the role of Carl, the lovelorn and nearsighted disco goer.

2006 – Closet case Republican congressman Mark Foley (from Florida) resigns after Instant Messages of a sexual nature between him and underage male Congressional pages are revealed.

Foley had served as chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children and  led legislation to make federal sex offender laws  harsher. Federal authorities had said the explicit IM messages could result in Foley’s prosecution, under some of the same laws he helped to enact but in the end Foley was not charged with any crime.

Foley is now in the real estate business in Palm Beach, Florida.

2012 – California becomes the first state to ban gay conversion therapy on minors to “cure” them of their homosexuality.

GOP Closet Case Ms. Lindsey Graham Calls Impeachment Trial Arguments “Offensive And Absurd”

Via Mediaite:

Hannity repeatedly railed against the Democrats’ argument and called the trial “devoid of facts” and “any compelling evidence.”

He then brought on Graham and asked him about past heated rhetoric from Democrats, and Graham responded by saying, “I hope the defense team is watching your show.”

“The not-guilty vote is growing after today. I think most Republicans found the presentation by the House managers offensive and absurd,” Graham continued.

Mike Pence Hired by Heritage Foundation Anti-LGBT Hate Group

Via press release:

The Heritage Foundation announced today that former Vice President Mike Pence will join the organization as a distinguished visiting fellow.

“Over the course of the past four years, our team at Heritage has worked closely with members of the Trump administration on a host of policy accomplishments,” said Heritage President Kay C. James.

“That’s why I am excited Vice President Mike Pence will join forces with Heritage to ensure we continue to advance conservative principles and policy solutions. His allegiance to the Constitution and commitment to advancing a conservative policy agenda make him an outstanding fit for The Heritage Foundation.”

Three decades ago, it was The Heritage Foundation’s influence that inspired Pence to help create a think tank in his home state of Indiana. After coming to Washington as a congressman and later as vice president, Pence frequently collaborated with Heritage and will now continue to do so as a distinguished visiting fellow.

Since its founding, the Heritage Foundation has become “inextricably intertwined” with Republican administrations and lawmakers in Washington. Heritage brands itself as a beacon of the intellectual conservative establishment; but spends significant energy to extremist policy recommendations to deny access to abortion and birth control and to harm LGBTQ people. In reality, it is an organization that regularly spouts hateful ideas on par with organizations like the Family Research Council (FRC),

SHOCKER: Mike Pence Says It Was The ‘Right Decision’ to Deny Embassies To Fly Rainbow Pride Flag

Vice President Mike Pence on Monday defended the State Department’s decision to bar U.S. embassies from flying rainbow flags on their flagpoles during LGBT Pride Month, saying that it was the “right” move.

Pence, who is well known for his anti-gay bigotry acknowledged in an interview with NBC News that he was aware that the State Department had “indicated” that the American flag should be the only flag flying on U.S. embassies’ flagpoles. He added that he supported the move.

Asked whether the move ran counter to Trump’s expressed support for LGBT Pride Month, Pence said that he and the president were “proud to be able to serve every American.”

“We both feel that way very passionately, but when it comes to the American flagpole and American embassies and capitals around the world, having the one American flag fly is the right decision,” he said, adding that the Trump administration had administered no other restrictions regarding flags or displays at U.S. embassies.

Some U.S. diplomats responded to the rejections by displaying the LGBT pride flag in different settings. For example, diplomatic missions in Seoul, South Korea, and Chennai, India, sent out press releases and videos showing the flag hanging outside their respective buildings.

Other embassies abroad opted to display the rainbow flag on building facades.

Self Loathing GOP Closet Case Aaron Schock’s Naked Pics Leaked Online – UPDATE: Video Added – NWSF

Via Kenneth in the 212:

We knew this day was coming. But I don’t think even I was prepared for the disgraced former U.S. congressman to be spreading his cheeks in such a way that would surely titilate people on both sides of the aisle.

Me personally I am not impressed. Besides imagine who in the Republican party has been there before. UGH.

BUSTED: Former GOP Congressman Aaron Schock Caught Making Out With Other Guys at Coachella

Aaron Schock, the former former Republican congressman from Peoria, Illinois who was ousted from Congress for over-decorating his office using public funds, Was BUSTED this weekend at Coachella hanging his gay friends, dancing shirtless to his hearts content, and getting busted kissing another guy while putting his hands down the guys shorts. (See photo above.)

Schock’s voting record in Congress was true to the anti-LGBT Republican playbook. He voted against adding ‘sexual orientation, gender identity, gender and disability’ to the federal hate crime protection groups, against the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ and for the Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage as between a man and a woman.

Multiple sources who were at Coachella have come forward to confirm Shock’s very gay behavior at the music event.

Itay Hod, senior writer at the Hollywood site The Wrap who first outed Schock in 2014 and received backlash from one in the LGBT community for outing him stated: “I think Aaron has a lot of explaining to do.
While we are all sympathetic to the struggle of coming out of the closet, for years Schock was one of the most homophobic members of Congress, actively working against the community. I think he owes the LGBTQ community an apology before we embrace him as a private citizen.”

Aaron Schock has been unavailable for comment.

FRC Hate Group Leader Tony Perkins: God Did Not Make Mayor Pete Gay!

FRC Hate Group Leader Tony Perkins: God Did Not Make Mayor Pete Gay!

Family Research Council confirmed hate group President Tony Perkins speaking today on Todd Starne’s Fox Nation news show:

The fact is, God does not create people that way. Now, there’s circumstances that lead one maybe down that path, and I’m not saying anyone would choose that lifestyle. But to say that they were made by God? First off, the science doesn’t back that up, and Scripture doesn’t back that up, because Jesus himself spoke to what marriage was. And Matthew also spoke to what gender was. I don’t hear Mayor Pete quoting that.

“Scripture warns of wolves in sheep’s clothing coming and talking smooth, trying to be all things to all people. The reality is he’s advocating for policies that are not in line with the Scripture. You can talk about words. You can use the rhetoric of Scripture, but your policy has to match it.

“When you’re redefining god’s institution of marriage, you can’t claim to be carrying out the policies and principles of Scripture when you’re doing things that are 180 degrees from it.

Ms. Perkins it seems is either very attracted to, or afraid of Pete Buttigieg.

Republican Rep. Jim Jordan Named in New Ohio State University Sexual Abuse Lawsuit

In a new class action lawsuit on behalf of former male university students extreme right-wing Republican Jim Jordan has been named for failing to prevent sexual abuse perpetrated by a university doctor.

Via Rolling Stone:

Jordan, the jut-jawed Republican and anti-gay crusader in the House, is singled out in the suit: He’s one of only three former school officials named, including Strauss, though the action is aimed at all the coaches, administrators and others in positions of responsibility at OSU who, it claims, stood by while students and student-athletes were repeatedly “sexually abused, harassed, and molested,” and “forced” to seek treatment from a well-known predator even after they complained. (Strauss was the sole team doctor for the wrestlers; the men say they either had to choose to let injuries go untreated, as the lawsuit says some did, or subject themselves to yet another assault.)

The lead plaintiff, “John Doe,” says he was groped, assaulted and molested at least 20 times. The other wrestlers have told reporters how Strauss allegedly used any excuse to make them expose themselves and grope them, and the lawsuit adds some sickening details:

“On one occasion, Plaintiff suffered a rib injury while wrestling and made an appointment to see Dr. Strauss for treatment. Dr. Strauss instructed Plaintiff to drop his pants so he could examine Plaintiff’s scrotum for a hernia. Plaintiff was young and believed that Dr. Strauss’ actions were medically necessary, but felt violated and helpless.”

The lawsuit alleges, among other things, that Strauss also took photographs of the men he was forcing to disrobe unnecessarily. It describes how he “regularly touched students’ genitals and breast areas, often at the same time, regularly measured students’ scrotums, all for the purpose of his own sexual arousal and gratification, and for no legitimate medical purpose and for no other reason than to satisfy his own sexual desires.

And Jim Jordan who was the wrestling coach at the time knew all about it.

You can read the lawsuit here in its entirety.

*CAVEAT: This article originally appeared in Rolling Stone of September 2019. We call this news “new” because this issue and Jordan’s involvement has flown under the radar of many and has been ignored. While of course we expect the horrid Republicans to stay quiet on this sexual abuse case and Jordan’s involvement it’s extremely disturbing that the #MeToo movement has not said a word about this. Be sure if the abuse happened to female athletes instead of males they would lose their minds.

Ms. Lindsey Graham: I Don’t Blame Donald Trump For Some “Nutjob Bomber”

Ohhhh gurl. You a mess bitch.

Via: The Washington Examiner

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said Thursday that some “nut job” sent suspicious packages with potential bombs to high-profile Democrats, brushing off complaints that President Trump’s pointed rhetoric is to blame.

“About the nut-job sending bombs in the mail –- Simply put, this is NOT the way we do business in America,” Graham tweeted. “I didn’t blame Bernie Sanders when a Bernie supporter shot Congressman Steve Scalise. And I’m not going to blame President Trump for this nut job.”

Ms. Lindsey no gay man with an ounce of self-respect will ever fuck you.

Sen. Lindsey Graham Declares: “I’m Not Gay” – VIDEO

TMZ reports:

Lindsey Graham is going high in response to Chelsea Handler going low, after she claimed to out him on Twitter. We got the Senator from South Carolina Friday at Reagan National Airport, and asked him about Handler’s #NationalComingOutDay tweet.

Instead of blasting her — as many others have — Graham insisted Chelsea had every right to say whatever she wants. As he put it, it’s a free country. Graham did tell us, “To the extent that it matters, I’m not gay” — but it was definitely a measured response.

Roy Cohn wasn’t gay either.

Or Mayor Ed Koch.

Or Malcolm Forbes.
