United Kingdom Lifts Gay Blood Donation Ban But Only If They Are Celibate

The United Kingdom has officially lifted its ban on blood and tissue donated by gay men.  Sort of….

A lifetime ban on blood donations by men who had had sex with another man was put in place in the UK in the 1980s as a response to the spread of AIDS and HIV.

The Advisory Committee on the Safety of Blood, Tissues and Organs (Sabto) new rules state that men who have not had homosexual sex within a year will be able to donate if they meet certain other criteria.  Men who have had anal or oral sex with another man in the past 12 months, with or without a condom, will still not be eligible to donate blood, the DoH said.

The move will be implemented in England, Scotland and Wales starting today

The Terrence Higgins Trust sexual health charity welcomed the change, which would ensure a safe blood supply that was also ‘fair and equal’.

But human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell called the 12-month ban on sex ‘excessive and unjustified’

Bitch Say What? – Celibate Lesbian Roman Catholic Eve Tushnet Blogs Against Gay Marriage.

Eve Tushnet, Is a 30 somthing celibate lesbian Roman Catholic, (Talk about OxyMORON), who is a Gay who advocates against same-sex marriage, and likes the idea of us LGBT’s keeping our fly zipped up for eternity.

Tushnet’s website receives “hundreds” of visits per week but her reach comes through her scribblings for magazines like the National Review, titles that are apt to give space to people “on the inside” of gays advocating against them. Her writings are interesting, in an insane way,  ex-gays! sublimation vs. repression! And so is her story: A D.C. resident now, she joined the Roman Catholicism while studying at Yale, and she earns her living writing and speaking about gays and religion and heaven and sex.

Today the Times did a profile on poor fucked-up Tushnet.  (It must really be a slooooow newsday)

Marriage should be reserved for heterosexuals, whose “relationships can be either uniquely dangerous or uniquely fruitful,” she explained in an e-mail message. “Thus it makes sense to have an institution dedicated to structuring and channeling them.”

But same-sex marriage, she wrote in The New York Post in 2007, “can bring one of three outcomes: A two-tiered marriage culture, where heterosexual couples are asked to do the hard things (sex only within marriage, marriage for life in most circumstances) and homosexual couples work out their own marriage norms; reshape marriage into an optional, individualized institution, ignoring the creative and destructive potentials of ‘straight’ sex; or encourage all couples to restrict sex to marriage and marry for life, and hope that gay couples accept norms designed to meet heterosexual needs.”

Tushnet, who is aptly named btw, aptly named btw, confuses legalizing gay marriage with some affront to heterosexual marriage. Her conclusions, of course, operate within the context of her Roman Catholic teachings, and if that isn’t enough to discount them, then her conspiracy theories about the snowball effect gay marriage will have should be.

Repressed people are like depressed people — lonely, sad, tired, annoying — but at least there ARE meds for depression. And depressed people don’t try to talk other people into becoming depressed.  She obviously feels bad or dirty about lesbian sex, and her out was to leave Judaism and enter a religious denomination which bans sex for hundreds of millions of people on this earth.  Just because she’s a Yalie doesn’t make her “well learned.”

Eve your platform is dangerous and I hope you are reading this because I just want to say to you sincerely that you have more baggage than Cher heading out on yet another final world tour, so don’t project your psychosis on the whole lot of us.
