“The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Sam Raimi’s sequel “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” will not be released in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, or Qatar due to a new character being gay. Homosexuality is officially illegal across the Gulf, and films that feature LGBTQ+ themes or characters are often censored.. The “Doctor Strange 2” character in question is America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), who is a lesbian in the film and the Marvel comics.“
Marvel’s “Eternals” was previously banned across the Gulf nations in November 2021 after showcasing Marvel’s first gay superhero and including a same-sex couple. Disney’s “West Side Story” was dropped from release in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, and Kuwait in January over the character Anybodys, written as transgender in the film and played by nonbinary actor Iris Menas.
And Marvel/Disney is not alone. Warner Bros.’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.” recently underwent editing for it’s distribution in China. The scene included two lines of dialogue between Dumbledore (Jude Law) and Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) confirming their past relationship and citing when they “fell in love” years prior. But expect calls from the Middle East in the near future for the same.
Sarah Rose, the petitioncreator, said of the problematic issues regarding the Zoolander sequel:
“Cumberbatch’s character is clearly portrayed as an over-the-top, cartoonish mockery of androgyne/trans/non-binary individuals. This is the modern equivalent of using blackface to represent a minority. Like any rational person, I think there’s a place for discourse and humor in society, but the last thing the transgender community needs at this moment is another “harmful, cartoonish portrayal of our lives.
If the producers and screenwriters of Zoolander wanted to provide social commentary on the presence of trans/androgyne individuals in the fashion industry, they could have approached models like Andreja Pejic to be in the film. By hiring a cis actor to play a non-binary individual in a clearly negative way, they film endorses harmful and dangerous perceptions of the queer community at large.”
Is a pretentious, androgynous model and a gender non-conforming or trans person the same thing?
The problem is that the whole movie is over the top cartoonish mockery. ALL the characters are over-the-top and cartoonish. If Ms. Amber Rose was serious her disgust it should be directed at that cartoon character known as Caitlyn “Republican Qusiling” Jenner. She’s as far removed from the community as one can get. And much more dangerous.
Andrew Scott, who plays Sherlock Cumberbatch’s evil arch-nemesis Moriarty on the hit BBC series Sherlock, has come out as “a gay person” in an interview with The Independent.
Oddly enough, the recent spate of antigay attitudes in Russia spurred on the low-key coming out in the interview. Though the interview covers his career and how Sherlock has changed it,
““Mercifully, these days people don’t see being gay as a character flaw,” he says. “But nor is it a virtue, like kindness. Or a talent, like playing the banjo. It’s just a fact.”
Scott who won Best Supporting Actor in a British Drama last year at the BAFTA Awards , also talked about his upcoming BBC drama called Legacy which required him to do a Russian accent. To prepare, he studied videos of Russian President Vladimir Putin, but that stopped when Putin introduced antigay legislation. As Scott tells it, “being a gay person, I switched to Rudolf Nureyev videos instead.”
Now we’ll just sit back and wait for Benedict Cumberbatch to break down the closet door. Till then we are more thna thrilled to hear that Andrew Scott has come out. Who doesn’t love a bad boy.
He had a tremendous falling-out with Daniel, and they have a real disagreement about events as they occur. Our movie is also based on a book by a Guardian reporter, and Assange took exception to that, too. But you know, he took exception to his own autobiography, which was ghostwritten by a wonderful author — he wouldn’t allow the release of it because it had things that were mildly critical of him. So he’s somebody who doesn’t really take well to presenting any other side
