Christian Gay Rights Advocate Fund-raises To Pay Fine for Bigoted Bakers In Oregon

idiot

Matt Stolhandske, a self-described evangelical Christian and board member of Evangelicals for Marriage Equality, a “Christian group” focused on having “gay unions” instead of same-sex marriages recognized by the Government,  on Friday wrote in a column published on the Washington Post website explaining why he and his group are  raising money in hopes of covering the fine levies on Melissa and Aaron Klein, the anti-gay owners of “Sweet Cakes by Melissa”  a bakery in Portland, Oregon, refused to make a cake for a lesbian couple’s wedding

Stolhandske wrote, ‘The Kleins say the $150,000 fee will bankrupt her family. I’m raising money to help offset that cost. I’ll send whatever we raise along to the Klein family with a message of love and peace. I don’t want them to suffer. But I am also pleading with them and other Christians to stop using the name of Jesus to explain to the LGBT community why we don’t deserve access to the civil rights afforded to heterosexuals through the legal institution of marriage.’

The Kliens assert that they were expressing their religious freedom when they turned down the couple’s order and have since jumped on the Family Research Council hate group bandwagon appearing at the last Values Voters Summit.

Stolhandske says  he expects criticism from the gay community for extending an ‘olive branch.’ “You’re an apologist for homophobes,” they tell me.

And they are right.

Bigot cake, bigot cake, baker’s man! – FRC’s Tony Perkins Applauds CO Baker For Not Backing Down To Mean Gay Bullies

Tony Perkins FRC KKK

“If you think Colorado’s Masterpiece Cakes will give in to homosexual bullies, then you don’t know Jack. Jack Phillips, the owner of another Christian bakery under attack, is refusing to cave to the state’s ridiculous demands after he turned down an order for a same-sex ‘wedding’ cake. With help from our friends at Alliance Defending Freedom, the baker and his family are fighting Colorado’s order that he check his religious beliefs at the door of his business and participate in the same-sex ‘marriages’ Christianity rejects.

“‘Americans should not be forced by the government — or by another citizen — to endorse or promote ideas with which they disagree,’ said attorney Nicholle Martin. ‘This is not about the people who asked for a cake; it’s about the message the cake communicates. Just as Jack doesn’t create baked works of art for other events with which he disagrees, he doesn’t create cake art for same-sex ceremonies regardless of who walks in the door to place the order.’

“For now, the case heads to the Colorado Court of Appeals where Jack and ADF will battle for the religious freedoms the Supreme Court just upheld for companies like Hobby Lobby. ‘If a couple were to come in and ask me to do an erotic cake for a wedding, I would refuse to do that as well. These are my personal standards taken from Jesus Christ and the Bible.’ Good for Jack. He’s a living example of what the apostle Paul calls Christians to do in the face of persecution: stand. You can’t win if you don’t fight, and thank goodness ADF and the Phillips are.” -FRC hate group leader and known white supremacist Tony Perkins, applauding skeevy baker Jack Phillips.

“‘Americans should not be forced by the government — or by another citizen — to endorse or promote ideas with which they disagree,’ said attorney Nicholle Martin.”

Really?  Then please tell The Marriott to take all the Bibles and copies of the Book of Mormon out of all their over-priced hotels.

Gresham, Oregon Bakery That Denied Same-Sex Wedding Cake Closed

Sweet Cakes by Melissa closed

Sweet Cakes by Melissa a bakery in Gresham, Oregon refused to bake a lesbian couples wedding cake in early February because  “it’s was against their religious beliefs”  has CLOSED.

In August, the Bureau of Labor and Industries said it was conducting an investigation to determine if the bakery violated the Oregon Equality Act of 2007, which protects the rights of LGBT Oregonians.

Aaron Klein, one of the owners of the Sweet Cakes by Melissa, refused to sell the cake to one of the brides-to-be because he said marriage should be only between a man and a woman.

The couple later filed a complaint with the justice department, which Klein’s attorney Herbert Grey responded to.  In his letter, Grey says the couple “elected not to participate in an event that is not even officially recognized under Oregon law when doing so would violate their constitutionally-protected conscience and religious beliefs.”

But right minded customers felt otherwise and Sweet Cakes by Melissa’s business took a major hit due to its anti-gay bigotry.

The bakery now sits  empty. All counter tops, display cases and decorations are gone and hanging in the window was a sign from the Oregon Family Council that read “Religious freedom is under attack in Gresham.”

Sweet Cakes by Melissa posted on its Facebook page, “This will be our last weekend at the shop we are moving our business to an in home bakery. I will post our new number soon.”

Perhaps this will make these bigots realize that you can’t have their cake and eat it too.

“Ace Of Cakes” Star Offers A Surprise To Lesbian Couple Denied Wedding Cake

gay cupcake

Here’s a silver lining for the story of the Oregon couple denied a cake for their wedding because the owner of Sweet Cakes Bakery, Aaron Klein, doesn’t believe in marriage equality and equal rights.  Duff Goldman, a renown baker and star of Ace of Cakes, decided to step in and help the couple. Here’s more from HuffPost:

In the wake of the incident, Baltimore-based pastry chef and “Ace of Cakes” star Duff Goldman is sending out an open offer to the couple (whose names have not been released) saying he’ll bake and transport their wedding cake completely free of charge.

The executive chef of the Baltimore-based Charm City Cakes told HuffPost Live, “I saw this story and I was like, “Wait — I can do something, there’s injustice involving a cake!”

Noting that Charm City has been making same-sex wedding cakes for some time, Goldman added, “For a cake decorator to really feel like he really needed to take a stand…it just makes absolutely no sense. It’s petty, it’s small…this man has wrapped up his hatred in the cloak of religion.”

Always great to see someone reach out and try to right someone else’s wrong. For a reminder, here’s what Klein had to say about the incident:

“I believe that marriage is a religious institution ordained by God, I’ll sell [gay people] stuff…I’ll talk to them, it’s fine. I’d rather have my kids see their dad stand up for what he believes in then to see him bow down because one person complained.”

But why would he even say that he can and would sell gay people stuff and contradicts that? And then he talks about his kids and how he wants to set a good example for them? How is treating someone different because they don’t  believe in the same things you do setting a good example? You’re not teaching your kids anything but to act like they’re better than everyone else Klein.  Stop trying to make this anything other than being a bigot.

“Sweet Cakes” Bakery in Gresham, OR Refuses Service To Lesbian Couple: “Its in the Constitution”

Bigoted baker Aaron Klein

Sweet Cakes by Melissa, a bakery service with stores in both Gresham and Portland OR has refused to bake a lesbian couples wedding cake because they say “it’s against their beliefs” and that its “in the Constitution” has been slapped with a discrimination complaint from a lesbian couple who they refused service to but are standing strong that its their right to discriminate.

“Did Sweet Cakes owner Aaron Klein violate the law when he told the couple that he couldn’t sell them a cake because “they were abominations to the Lord?” That’s what Oregon Attorney General’s civil enforcement officers are looking into after one of the brides-to-be filed a complaint on Jan. 28. The woman who filed the complaint said she had previously bought a cake from Sweet Cakes for her mother’s wedding. It was fine. But when her partner went back for their wedding cake on Jan. 17, the owner refused.

Klein on Friday denied making the harsh statement, but admitted to a KATU reporter on camera that he did deny her service. “I apologized for wasting their time and said we don’t do same-sex marriages,” he said. I “honestly did not mean to hurt anybody, didn’t mean to make anybody upset, (it’s) just something I believe in very strongly.” But beliefs aren’t enough to cover him under state law. The Oregon Equality Act of 2007 prohibits discrimination against people based on their sexual orientation and gender identity. The statute includes public accommodations, such as businesses.”

Make no mistake about it this is not about religious freedom but it is about peoples religious beliefs onto those that do not share them.  This is no different from a restaurant that refuses to serve people of color, or a hotel that refuses to give Jews a room, or a bar that will not serve women.

At the  Sweet Cakes Facebook page  the couple has been frantically deleting most negative comments and leaving those only from closed minded “Christian” bigots like themselves.

But hey kids.  They can’t delete comments on YELP
