Television newcomer Casey Cott has landed the role of Kevin Keller in Riverdale , the CW Networks upcoming TV show twist on the long-runing Archie comics series.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Chief Creative Officer of Archie Comics Publications, made the official announcement. He tweeted, “And last but certainly not least–KEVIN KELLER (@CaseyCott) joins the ever-expanding Riverdale universe!!”
Keller is the first openly gay character in the history of Archie Comics. He made his first appearance in Veronica #202 (September 2010). His debut was so popular that the comic sold out and Archie Comics did something it had never done before: issued a reprint. In February 2012, Keller received his own ongoing title, but it came to an end in 2014.
The CW describes the show: The live-action series offers a bold, subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring small-town life and the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome facade. The show will focus on the eternal love triangle of Archie Andrews, girl-next-door Betty Cooper, and rich socialite Veronica Lodge, and will include the entire cast of characters from the comic books—including Archie’s rival, Reggie Mantle, and his slacker best friend, Jughead Jones.
The CW has already cast the rest of the core Riverdale line-up, including; KJ Apa as Archie, Ashleigh Murray as Josie, Camila Mendes as Veronica, Lili Reinhart as Betty, Cole Sprouse as Jughead
Mashable has the story:
Archie Andrews the famous freckle-faced comic book icon is meeting his demise in Wednesday’s installment of “Life with Archie” when he intervenes in an assassination attempt on Kevin Keller, Archie Comics’ first openly gay character. Andrews’ death, which was first announced in April, will mark the conclusion of the series that focuses on grown-up renditions of Andrews and his Riverdale pals.
“The way in which Archie dies is everything that you would expect of Archie,” said Jon Goldwater, Archie Comics publisher and co-CEO. ” He dies heroically. He dies selflessly. He dies in the manner that epitomizes not only the best of Riverdale but the best of all of us. It’s what Archie has come to represent over the past almost 75 years.”
Keller’s character first joined Veronica Lodge, Betty Cooper, Jughead Jones and Reggie Mantle in the Archie Comics spin-off “Veronica” in 2010. He later appeared in his own solo title. In “Life with Archie,” Keller is a married military veteran and newly elected senator who’s pushing for more gun control in Riverdale after his husband was involved in a shooting.
Well done Archie Comics!
Archie saving a gay, gun-control-pushing senator! The only way this could be any better is it turns out Archie was an illegal immigrant.
NOTE: Breitbart.com has just picked up the story.. It’s getting comments faster than you can say “libruls r runing Merica’.
In an exclusive interview with Back2Stonewall, comic book artist and writer Dan Parent revealed that The Archies, an icon of American comics since 1941, will be supporting the boycott of Russia in the wake of the country’s new homophobic laws. Parent revealed that Archie and friends will be cancelling the Russia portion of a four country tour in Europe
Parent, best known for his work for his work on the Archie Comics and the introduction of Riverdale’s first openly gay character Kevin Keller, spent a few minutes with Back2Stonewall this weekend at Wizard World Comic-Con Chicago . We spent a few minutes talking with Dan and heard his thoughts on Russia’s anti-gay laws and human rights violations against its LGBT citizens.
“I’ve just been catching up on it,” Parent said, “It’s really upsetting.”
When asked whether he agreed with and supported a boycott of Russia, Parent instantly replied “Yes. Russia should be boycotted, so much so that actually in an upcoming special four issue story arch I’m writing the Archie gang are going to take a world tour to four countries. Russia was to be one of them. But they’re not going there now. They just can’t and they won’t. They love and support Kevin.”
This is not the first the first pro-gay stand Parent has taken since the introduction of Kevin Keller. Using the comic venue, Parent has taken on the issues of bullying, homophobia, the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and same-sex marriage, bringing these issues to the forefront of the comic community with unbridled support and understanding.
Kevin Keller, who was introduced Veronica #202, received national attention, positive reviews, and became the first Archie comic book to sell out in the comics 69-year history.
Dan Parent is a true LGBT ally.
Well it looks like the GLEE gang is taking a roadtrip from Lima, OH to Riverdale to visit the Archie gang!
BuzzFeed has debuted Dan Parent’s cover for Archie #641, the first issue of a storyline in which the Glee kids visit Riverdale and will hangout with Archie, Betty, Veronica, Kevin and Jughead and the hillarity will ensure.
Announced in July, the crossover is penned by comics writer and Glee co-producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and illustrated by Parent, and arrives on the heels of publisher’s much-publicized “Archie meets KISS” storyline.”
Archie Comics Co-CEO Jon Goldwater told Comic Book Resources. “What I’ve been trying to establish in Riverdale is that the characters stay the same, but Riverdale changes. And as musicians change in the culture, they can seamlessly integrate into comic books.”
I so hope Kurt hits on Reggie and forces him to come out. But knowing that character he’ll probably join GOProud.
