Gay History – September 24, 1982: The Centers for Disease Control Uses The Term “AIDS” For The First Time

Gay History – 1976: First Discovered AIDS Cases Found In Zaire, Africa

Most of us set the start date of AIDS with the June 1981 when a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describing five gay men who had died of a mysterious disease in Los Angeles and more followed in New York City.. When the HIV virus was isolated in 1984 and a test for the virus became available in 1985, several avenues of research opened up to try to figure out where this virus came from. Doctors in Paris and Brussels, who had long been treating wealthy African patients from their former colonies bearing all of the hallmarks of the new disease, pointed to Africa as a possible source for the virus. On February 4, 1988, the New England Journal of Medicine published a report by Dr. Nzila Nzilambi from Kinshasa, Zaire and other doctors from Belgium and the CDC which strongly suggested an African source for the virus, and revealed that AIDS had been a persistent health problem in rural Zaire as early as the mid 1970s.

n 1976, there had been an outbreak of Ebola in the northeastern Zaire along the Congo river. In the course of the medical investigations, hundreds of serum samples were collected from people throughout the area. Those samples remained preserved Zaire and were flown to Atlanta for testing. Investigators then went back in 1986 and collected more samples from as many people as possible, 388 in all. Ninety of them had also been among the 659 samples collected in 1976. Five of the samples from 1976 tested positive for HIV. Two were still alive ten years later; one was healthy, but the other was already showing signs of a suppressed immune system. Three were dead.  Another woman, the wife of one of the two HIV-positive men still alive, “died in 1981 after a long illness associated with fever, weight loss, skin rash, and oral lesions.” Again an apparent death from AIDS. The third was a child who was seven years old in 1976, who “died of pneumonia and weight loss at the age of 16.”

Also, a 47-year old Danish woman who worked as a surgeon in a primitive rural hospital in Zaire in 1972-77  had repeated episodes of diarrhea. In 1976, fatigue, wasting, and universal lymphadenopathy emerged. She patient recalled encountering at least 1 case of Kaposi’s sarcoma in her work in Zaire, where she was likely heavily exposed. She passed away in December 1977.

Risk factors such as homosexuality, bisexuality, and intravenous drug abuse were not present in the histories of any of these 7 individuals. Rather, heterosexual contacts in Central Africa in the early 1970s and earlier was the sole risk factor.

The doctors concluded: “The results of our study showed that HIV infection was already present in an isolated portion of Zaire in 1976 and that the prevalence of infection in the general population there did not change significantly over the 10-year observation period.”

Deplorable Anti-Gay Hate Preacher Steven Anderson Banned From Entering South Africa Labeled As “Undesirable”

Anti-gay pastor Steven Anderson has been banned from visiting South Africa over his extremist homo-phobic views and sermons, which the country’s home affairs minister on Tuesday equated with hate speech.

Anderson, of the Faithful Word Baptist Church in Arizona, notoriously welcomed the gunning down in June of 50 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida by saying “there’s 50 less pedophiles in this world”.

South African gay and lesbian groups collected more than 60,000 signatures opposing his visit this weekend, when he was expected to preach and seek converts to his church.

However, his recent video rant sparked a petition, spear-headed by Gay SA Radio station manager, Hendrik Baird

Citing anti-discrimination laws designed to “prevent and prohibit hate speech”, Home Affairs minister Malusi Gigaba told a media briefing he was banning Anderson indefinitely.

Initially, the Home Affairs Department had said that it would be attaching “serious conditions” to him upon entry to South Africa.

“The promotion of equality binds the state and all persons to prevent and prohibit hate speech,” Gigaba said during the media briefing in Cape Town.

“Pastor Anderson will be barred from travelling to South Africa for practicing racial hatred. He is an undesirable person. Anderson is a prohibited person in South Africa and so are members of his group.”

South Africa became the first country in Africa to legalize gay marriage in 2006, but homosexuality is still widely frowned upon and same-sex unions are often decried as “un-African”. Also LGBT hate crimes run rampant.  In South Africa, gangs of men, especially in poorer black townships, have raped lesbians in the belief it will “cure” their sexual orientation.

Anderson said he felt sorry for the South Africans.

“Anderson wrote on his Facebook page.

“I feel sorry for people who live in South Africa, but thank God we still have a wide open door in Botswana.” Anderson wrote on his Facebook page.

It was not clear when and if he was due to visit Botswana.

Scott Lively’s Crimes Against Humanity Trial Starts, Liberty Counsel Demands Information About The Ugandan Plaintiffs

Scott Lively in Uganda

Scott Lively’s Crimes Against Humanity trial finally began today in Massachusetts the anti-gay legal hate group the Liberty Counsel, who is defending him is demanding more information about the plaintiffs, Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG).

Lively himself didn’t even bother showing up for the trial.

Via MassLive:

Lively is being represented by the Liberty Counsel, based in Orlando, Florida, which bills itself on its website as “an international nonprofit litigation, education, and policy organization dedicated to advancing religious freedom, the sanctity of life, and the family.” It has provided pro bono legal assistance on these and related topics since 1989. Attorney Roger Gannam on Tuesday argued that lawyers for the plaintiffs were being so surreptitious in turning over documents – already subject to an “attorney’s eyes only” restriction – that it was hindering Lively’s ability to wage an effective defense.

“Scott Lively has no desire for the information except for this lawsuit,” Gannam argued to U.S. Magistrate Judge Katherine Robertson. “SMUG has not proved that it’s reliable in deciding what Scott Lively should see and shouldn’t see.” In particular, the lawyer cited an email relating to a SMUG fund-raiser geared toward paying fees in the Lively case, which he said was so heavily redacted even the subject line was blacked out. Gannam also referred to images the plaintiffs have withheld of participants at the 2009 workshop in Uganda, which he argued Lively couldn’t confirm were there if he can’t see their faces. Gannam also suggested the plaintiffs’ representation of the significance of the 2009 workshop in Uganda was overstated.

So in a nutshell.  Lively’s and his lawyers want identifying info on lots of LGBT Ugandans, so they can use it to intimidate them with that implicit threat so they back down And in an even worse senario forward it to  Africa where they can be arrested or killed.

Not only should Scott Lively be found guilty but a lawsuit should be brought against  Rick Warren, who helped spread the hatred overseas as well.

US National Security Adviser Denounces Gambian President Over Vow To “Slit The Throats” Of Gay Men

Gambia

Yesterday US National Security Adviser Susan Rice denounced Gambian President Yahya Jammeh who last week vowed to “slit the throats” of gay men, adding, “If you are a man and want to marry another man in this country and we catch you, no one will ever set eyes on you again, and no white person can do anything about it.”

In October 2014 Jammeh signed a bill which makes homosexual acts punishable by life in prison.

“We condemn his comments, and note these threats come amid an alarming deterioration of the broader human rights situation in The Gambia,” Rice said in a statement. “We are deeply concerned about credible reports of torture, suspicious disappearances – including of two American citizens – and arbitrary detention at the government’s hands.” Rice made the remarks in a statement one day before the International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia, saying the remarks from Gambia President Yahya Jammeh underscore the need for continued efforts “to seek a world in which no one lives in fear of violence or persecution because of who they are or whom they love.” Jemmeh, who’s been in power since 1994 and survived a coup attempt on December 30, issued a warning to gay men in the Wolof language during a recent rally in which he also threatened the political opposition, according to a translation of his remarks obtained by the international news agency Vice News.

The Office of Tourism for Gambia must be an awfully lonely place to work.  And hopefully so will  the Gambian office that receives Foreign Aid shortly.

Gambia Dropped From African Free Trade Agreement Over Anti-LGBT Abuses

Gambia

Via Buzzfeed:

The United States on Tuesday dropped the Gambia from a popular free trade agreement in response to a crackdown on LGBT rights and other human rights concerns. The decision to drop the small West African nation from special trade status under the African Growth and Opportunity Act of 2000 came late Tuesday afternoon, just after media in the Gambia announced that three men would be put on trial for homosexuality. These are the first to face trial since police began arresting people on allegations of homosexuality in November. At least 16 more are known to be in detention, and Gambian human rights activists do not know if they are even still alive. The move comes after Gambian human rights activists were able to secure their first meetings with high-ranking U.S. officials after years of unsuccessfully trying to get the State Department to respond to the abysmal human rights during President Yahya Jammeh’s 20 years in power. The meeting coincided with a petition drive launched by the largest American LGBT organization, the Human Rights Campaign, calling on the Obama administration to “take swift action against President Jammeh for his intolerable actions.”

Jammeh has been quoted as saying that no amount of foreign aid will bring LGBT rights to Gambia and has threatened to decapitate “any homosexuals found” in the country.

Although it is debatable whether the district court has properly parsed the petitioner’s protected speech from any unprotected speech or conduct, his right to extraordinary relief is not clear and indisputable. Lively, the founder of Abiding Truth Ministries, an officially recognized hate group has made a career of stirring up anti-gay feelings in the USA and across the world.

He co-authored The Pink Swastika, which suggests ‘homosexuals were the truth inventors of Nazism and the guiding force behind many Nazi atrocities’ and the rainbow flag is a symbol of the ‘end times’.

Lively  is accused of engineering the Uganda ‘Kill The Gays’ bill.

This is the second time that Lively and his defense team from The Liberty Council have petitioned for dismissal and lost.

UGANDA To Present New Anti-Gay Laws Before The End Of The Year

Uganda Kill The Gays Bill

Coming a month after Uganda’s President  Yoweri Museveni  claimed that his his nation could risk a trade boycott with western countries if Uganda’s draconian anti-gays laws were to be re-instated after being struck down on a technicality.  The vehemently anti-gay country is once again drafting new anti-gay laws that in someways mirror Russia’s anti-gay propaganda laws in which anyone convicted of “promoting” homosexuality would be liable to seven years in prison.

Via the Guardian:

The Ugandan government could introduce new wide-reaching anti-gay laws before the end of the year, which could see people jailed for up to seven years for “promoting homosexuality”, activists warned on Saturday. The move comes nearly a year after Ugandan politicians passed legislation that could have imposed life sentences on gays. The bill was struck down by the constitutional court on a technicality. According to a leaked copy of the new draft law, MPs have instead focused on outlawing the “promotion” of homosexuality – a potentially far more repressive and wide-reaching measure. Frank Mugisha, a gay-rights activist, said: “People don’t realise that the ‘promotion’ part of it will affect everybody. If newspapers report about homosexuality it could be seen as promotion. My Twitter account could be seen as promotion. All human rights groups that include LGBT rights defence in their activities could be accused of promotion.” According to the draft, anyone convicted of “promoting” homosexuality would be liable to seven years in prison. “We have confirmed that the draft comes from the cabinet. Their plan is to present it to parliament as soon as possible, before the end of the year,” Mugisha said.

Liberian Doctor Reduces Ebola Mortality Rate From 70% to 7% Using The AIDS Drug Epivir

EBOLA

A  doctor in Liberia, acting out of frustration for the lack of medication to fight the Ebola virus in his country  is reporting success in treating the deadly disease with the HIV medication marketed as Epivir.

Dr. Gobee Logan has given the drug, lamivudine, to 15 Ebola patients, and all but two survived. That’s a 7% mortality rate. Across West Africa, the virus has killed 70% of its victims. Outside Logan’s Ebola center in Tubmanburg, four of his recovering patients walk the grounds, always staying inside the fence that separates the Ebola patients from everyone else. “My stomach was hurting; I was feeling weak; I was vomiting,” Elizabeth Kundu, 23, says of her bout with the virus. “They gave me medicine, and I’m feeling fine. We take it, and we can eat — we’re feeling fine in our bodies.” Kundu and the other 12 patients who took the lamivudine and survived, received the drug in the first five days or so of their illness. The two patients who died received it between days five and eight. Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases says that theoretically, Logan’s approach has some merit. Lamivudine is a nucleocide analog, and other drugs in this class are being studied to treat Ebola.

Epivir (aka 3TC) was invented by Dr. Bernard Belleau while at work at McGill University and Dr Paul Nguyen-Ba at the Montreal-based IAF BioChem International, Inc. It has been a big breakthrough in tri-therapies and is typically prescribed as one of the medications in the combination pills Trizivir and Combovir to fight against HIV.

Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe: Gays and Lesbians Are “Inhuman”

Mugabe

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is at it again.

Mugabe who has in the past has barbarically threatened behead gays and lesbians is keeping his hate speech alive and mentally un-well this time by referring to gays and lesbians as “inhuman.”

According to the Washington Blade:

“The West says we must accept there is change in the world, that gays have human rights,” he said during an event at a hotel in Harare, the country’s capital, that commemorated International Women’s Day as the Herald, a Zimbabwean newspaper, reported. “Gays have no human rights. They have human rights – human rights for doing an inhuman thing.”

While the Unuted States does have some “sanctions” in place against Zimbawe  it continues to be a leading provider of humanitarian assistance to the people of Zimbabwe. The United States provided over $300 million in 2009 and over $200 million in 2010 for humanitarian, food, health, and democracy and governance assistance to Zimbabwe.  In 2011, the United States continued to provide this level of assistance while also raising its commitment to fight HIV and AIDS in Zimbabwe by $10 million to a total of $57.5 million.
