Sharon Needles is Buffalo Jill in Peaches Christ’s The Silence of the Trans

My buddy Elliot told me about an event coming Saturday, July 28th, to the Castro Theatre that some Sharon Needles fans may be VERY interested in. Peaches Christ is hosting a psycho summer extravaganza screening of THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS featuring “The Silence of the Trans” stage-show starring Peaches Christ, the Midnight Mass Players, and Sharon Needles!

Talk about “Happy Halloween”! Sharon Needles is sure to freak ‘em out with her already spooky persona as deranged psycho-serial-killer, Buffalo Jill. Peaches Christ will be starring as Trannibal Lecter.

They’ll be having a Serial Killer costume contest so come as your favorite psychotic!

Documentary Review: Making the Boys

Just as Mart Crowley’s The Boys in the Band is essential gay drama for every gay person to experience, the documentary on the creation of this gay cultural phenomenon, Making the Boys by director Crayton Robey, is no exception.

More than just a documentary on the play and it’s eventual adaptation to film, Making the Boys outlines the history of the gay rights movement, the contributions the play made to the movement, and it’s vilification and eventual recognition as an important part of gay history.

The documentary starts out setting the tone with clips from the 1950′s public service announcement created by the Inglewood Police Department for the Inglewood Unified School District, called “Boys Beware“. This PSA warned people about “homosexuals” and outlined the “tactics” they use to prey on young boys.  We know from this point that Robey is going to reveal to us a kind of documentary that highlights the effects The Boys in the Band has made on the perceptions of gay culture.

Al Franken Fact Checks Grassley on History of Marriage

During a Senate Committee meetings today regarding the repeal of DOMA, Senator Chuck Grassley from Iowa expressed that DOMA should not be repealed because, “For thousands of years, across all cultures and nations, marriage was exclusively a heterosexual institution.”

Citing great respect for Grassley, Al Franken countered him and said,

“I just believe you misstated the history of marriage. Marriage has not existed as a union between one man and one woman for thousands of years in every culture. In many cultures, men have been able to marry many women and young girls. For centuries, women have been treated as cattle in marriage. Further, if the religious purpose for marriage is procreation, why would we sanction marriage between an 89 year-old widower and an 80 year-old widow? I just think we need to be accurate when we talk about the history of man and woman, the history of our institutions.”
