The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports:
House Freedom Caucus founder Jim Jordan – a conservative firebrand from Champaign County – announced Thursday that he’ll run for Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.
“Should the American people entrust us with the majority again in the 116th Congress, I plan to run for Speaker of the House to bring real change to the House of Representatives,” said a statement Jordan released through a spokesman.
“President Trump has taken bold action on behalf of the American people,” his statement continued. “Congress has not held up its end of the deal, but we can change that. It’s time to do what we said.”
Jordan’s announcement comes amid recent accusations that Jordan was aware, as an assistant wrestling coach at Ohio State University three decades ago, that a team doctor allegedly was sexually abusing athletes.
Several former wrestlers have said the team discussed alleged misconduct with Jordan about Strauss touching them inappropriately during appointments and showering with them. Jordan denies all knowledge of the sexual abuse that happened.
