  1. AIDS was a great catalyst: it brought many gays out of the closet because they contracted the virus, and it brought out many others who were emboldened to fight the fight for LGBT rights and AIDS prevention. It also brought out the haters and the bigots who were likewise emboldened to spew their hatred and violence toward gays and LGBT persons who dared to be proud and visible. In some respects, it has brought us to where we are today – a country divided into presumably “moralistic” camps – the religious fundamentalists/conservatives and the progressive humanists. The festering hatred now seems to be coming to a head, with open and unapologetic hostility and violence. We need people like Vito Russo – intelligent activists who can not only articulate the truth but lead the masses of young LGBTs.
