After years of Back2stonewall.com’s pointing out the the lack of LGBT characters and story-lines on AMC’s the Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus who plays the shit-kicking redneck character of Daryl Dixon on the hit AMC zombie show did a lengthy Q&A this month in GQ magazine where he said that he portrays his character like he’s a”prison gay.”
“I remember Frank Darabont, after the first season, we were at a party in L.A. He said, ‘I’ve got an idea for Daryl. He’s gay. Would you be interested in that?’ I was like, ‘Let me hear you out.’ He said, ‘Well, he’s prison gay. Like, you’ll catch him looking at a member of the same sex, but if you mention it to him, he’ll just stab you and be like, What the f***? He will never admit it.’ I was like, ‘That’ll blow minds — let’s do that.’ And he said, ‘I knew I hired you for a reason.'”
Now of course this comes after creator Robert Kirkman is addressed the rumors about Daryl’s sexuality in the letter column to “The Walking Dead” #130 last April.
“All I can say is that it’s been discussed. We have very specific ideas about Daryl’s sexuality (or the seeming lack thereof), and if there’s ever a quiet period in the show where he’s not consistently distracted by crossbowing… we’ll tackle it in the show.”
And while TWD Executive producer Scott Gimple has added a lesbian character (Tara) and has said that there will be a gay character by the end of the fifth season, (this after much blowback from this website) the chances of it actually being Daryl are slight at best especially considering the shows reluctance in the past to include gay story-lines and characters. If we had to venture a guess though we’d wager that at the end of the season will find the introduction of the character arfirst encountered in Issue 67 of Image Comics’ The Walking Dead named Aaron from the Alexandria Safe-Zone which happens to be on the way to Washington, D.C.
Either way if the constant badgering from this website has anything to do with any gay characters being added we’ll take it. But “prison gay”? C’mon Norman and Frank you can be less offensive and do better than that. But we’ll forgive you if Daryl drops the soap and does indeed turn out to be the first zombie apocalypse ass-kicking gay redneck in television history!
