Bakery Loses Fight in Refusing Lesbian Couple Wedding Cake

Sweet CakesState of Oregon investigators have determined that the policy of Sweet Cakes to not sell a wedding cake to a lesbian couple is illegal.

Last year Rachel Cryer and Laurel Bowman went into Sweet Cakes and requested them to make a cake for their wedding. The owners, Aaron and Melissa Klein, refused by saying that Rachel and Laurel were “abominations to the Lord.”

The story became more interesting when a local newspaper began submitting requests for cakes that they thought would be turned down as well. These requests included a party for a divorce, a celebration of the pagan solstice complete with green pentagram decoration, a congratulatory cake on a grant to study cloning human stem cells, and even a cake celebrating a baby born out of wedlock. All were accepted, reported Willamette Week in May.

A year after the incident, the Bureau of Labor and Industries has determined the Sweet Cakes policy is illegal, The Oregonian reports. And the owners will either have to settle or take the case to court, according to KGW-TV.
