Welcome back to Week in Geek! As always, hope you enjoy the geeky recap and feel free to email me or leave a comment for suggestions and tips.
It’s not even close to the end of the year but conventions are already rolling out their guests for 2014. In April, MoCCA Fest will honor queer creators Alison Bechdel and Howard Cruse in their annual zine and small publisher gathering. Bechdel is probably most famous for her strip “Dykes to Watch Out For,” and her graphic novels Fun Home and Are You My Mother garnered widespread acclaim. Cruse is the author and illustrator of Stuck Rubber Baby, a semi-autobiographical story of growing up queer in the South during the civil rights era, and edited the infamous Gay Comix. After an ultra-successful inaugural debut, GaymerX is back in July for another convention targeting queer gamers. Scheduled guests include pioneering programmer Gordon Bellamy, author John Scalzi, and voice actress Ellen McLain. Tickets are now available on the Gaymer X site here.
Fan-favorite actor (and newly wedded) John Barrowman posted pictures of himself on his adult Big Wheels. Why? Who knows. Does it matter?
This picture of Star Trek’s Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine has been popping up around the internet this week. Because who doesn’t love great slash fiction coming to life? Image via Twitter
DC claimed nearly half of September’s comic book sales, driven primarily by the high demand for its Villain Months titles, which featured 3D premium covers. While I’m sure execs are delighted by the news, one has to wonder whether or not more gimmick products are in the pipeline, with publishers placing more emphasis on eye-catching window dressing over quality stories. Finally, Marvel debuted a puzzle game for smartphones and tablets. Marvel Puzzle Quest: Dark Reign offers little in terms of innovation, but, much like Bejeweled and Candy Crush Saga, you’ll find yourself playing “just one more round” late into the evening. It’s by far the least queer news of the week, other than it’s been occupying most of my free time for the past couple of days.
