Lionsgate Responds to Ender’s Game Boycott: We’ll Give You Money If You Shut Up.

Lionsgate Orson Scott Card

With just six days remaining  until Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment brings its new big budget sci-fi franchise Ender’s Game to Comic-Con, the studio has been keeping quite about controversy surrounding it’s anti-gay author Orson Scott Card.  That is until now.

As proud longtime supporters of the LGBT community, champions of films ranging from “Gods and Monsters” to “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” and a company that is proud to have recognized same-sex unions and domestic partnerships within its employee benefits policies for many years, we obviously do not agree with the personal views of Orson Scott Card and those of the National Organization for Marriage. However, they are completely irrelevant to a discussion of “Ender’s Game.” The simple fact is that neither the underlying book nor the film itself reflect these views in any way, shape or form. On the contrary, the film not only transports viewers to an entertaining and action-filled world, but it does so with positive and inspiring characters who ultimately deliver an ennobling and life-affirming message. Lionsgate will continue its longstanding commitment to the LGBT community by exploring new ways we can support LGBT causes and, as part of this ongoing process, will host a benefit premiere for “Ender’s Game.” – Lionsgate official release.

So the fact that Card has made and will make in the end estimated millions of dollars between the story rights, distribution rights, and his box office percentage through Lions Gate and Summit Entertainment that he will use to help fund and push anti-LGBT civil rights campaigns is so totally “irrelevant” to Lionsgate not even worth thinking about .  And so is the fact that Card sits on the board and donates money to the National Organization for Marriage, calls gays pederast, wants us thrown in jail, and has threatened to over throw the Government over LGBT civil rights ALL of this to Lionsgate is totally “irrelevant” except for the “story” of Ender’s Game itself which ironically has to do with the blind intolerance of a species to another because they are different and thier want and quest to destroy them.

So how in the end how do the geniuses at Lionsgate attempt to handle this? (Even though it is irrelevant)

They want to host a benefit premiere for the LGBT community for “Ender’s Game.”

Lisa Derrick of LA FIGA over at FireDogLake sums it up nicely.

REALLY? Come see this movie based on works by a man who hates you, and let us throw dollars to staunch the pain that his words and deeds, that his money donated to campaigns against you has caused.   And then maybe you’ll tell all your friends it’s a good movie and we can make some money back off this PR nightmare. Because everyone has a price.

Fuck you, Lionsgate.

ANY LGBT Organization that gets involved with a benefit and sells out for money. (And yes I am talking to you HRC and GLAAD.) really needs to really rethink it.  Because it will create a PR nightmare from which they may never recover.

That’s just fair warning.

  1. It’s a shame, really. I liked Ender’s Game a lot when I’d read it, before I knew anything about Card. I’d never buy a book by him again.

What do you think?
