The GOP and Tea Party Turn Their Backs On Disabled Americans and Vets. Grab the Pitchforks!

Yesterday The Resolution of Advice and Consent to Ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, a United Nations resolution, was defeated in a 61-38 vote. thanks to the Tea Party and the GOP.

The resolution needed 66 votes to pass and the treaty had earned the support of more than 300 organizations, including 21 veterans and military service organizations.

Former Senator Bob Dole, 89 years old and in a wheelchair, went onto to the floor of the Senate to urged his former GOP colleagues to ratify it and one by one, according to Roll Call, the senators approached Mr. Dole to pat his shoulder or clasp his hand, making gestures of respect for the man who was for many years the Republican majority leader.

But in the end ONLY EIGHT  Republicans voted yes: Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, John Barrasso of Wyoming, Scott Brown of Massachusetts, Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine, Richard Lugar of Indiana, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and John McCain of Arizona.

John Kerry, the Massachusetts Democrat and chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in a statement after the vote:

This is one of the saddest days I’ve seen in almost 28 years in the Senate, and it needs to be a wake-up call about a broken institution that’s letting down the American people.”

“Today the dysfunction hurt veterans and the disabled, and that’s unacceptable. This treaty was supported by every veterans group in America and Bob Dole made an inspiring and courageous personal journey back to the Senate to fight for it. It had bipartisan support, and it had the facts on its side, and yet for one ugly vote, none of that seemed to matter. We won’t give up on this and the Disabilities Treaty will pass because it’s the right thing to do, but today I understand better than ever before why Americans have such disdain for Congress and just how much must happen to fix the Senate so we can act on the real interests of our country.”

To have done this in front of Bob Dole and behind the backs of every other disabled veteran and disabled citizen in America has got to be the single most disgraceful and despicable act yet committed by this collection of  disgraceful Republican and Tea Party politicians.   And hopefully once and for all this will expose to all heir cancerous philosophical mania iwhich is infecting our Government and destroying America

The United States needs a good Congressional cleaning — Both House and Senate of these reprehensible right wing fringe  politicians.  And after yesterday, I’ll be the first to help gather the pitchforks, tar and feathers and help make it become a reality because they deserve nothing less.

It’s too bad that Mr. Dole isn’t as acerbic or as outspoken as he used to be because I am sure that he’ tell  the GOP and the Tea Party people what they could do with their gestures of “respect” that they gave him before they spit all over him and the American people.
