Washington State Senate Passes Same Sex Marriage Equality Bill

Despite nasty attempts by the Washington State GOP Senate to derail Washington States Same Sex Marriage Bill by trying (and failing) to add on amendments would have made it legal for any business to discriminate against gay couples the Washington state Senate passed a bill Wednesday night, 28-21 that would legalize same-sex marriage, setting the stage for the state to become the seventh to allow gay and lesbian couples to wed.

Democratic Sen. Ed Murray, the bill’s sponsor, said he knew same-sex marriage “is as contentious as any issue that this body has considered in its history.”

Two of the previously undecided Republicans, Sens. Joe Fain  and Andy Hill voted in support of the measure Wednesday, as did two Republican colleagues, Sens. Steve Litzow and Cheryl Pflug

Litzow said he was voting for the bill “because I believe it’s the right thing to do.”

The Senate Bill now goes to the Washington House, where passage is all but guaranteed.
